It's not stupid to hope that a festival books interesting and exciting acts which Pitchfork did. On the other hand Bonnaroo added the same old stuff that they have every year. I love Ump and Galactic but those are probably the two least exciting adds they could have made.

It was more of the way he phrased it. Do I wish Bonnaroo would book Panda Bear and Broken Social Scene as an add? Yes, two of my favorite acts. But Bonnaroo hasn't shown any indication they are willing to take chances at this point.

that's another stupid statement. bonnaroo takes plenty of chances. they even book some of these trendy indie bands that play at festivals like pitchfork. i would say what they do have on the lineup is more risk taking than booking pitchfork bands.

They should book some of these pitchfork bands, that's the problem. I think a lot of people would love to see Pavement, BSS, Panda Bear, and Girl added to the lineup but they haven't given us any indication they will. It would go a long way to appease the fans who enjoyed TV on the Radio, YYY's, Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, St. Vincent, Bon Iver, and Grizzly Bear from last year. Who did those fans get this year? The National and LCD Soundsystem, that really isn't enough.
This lineup is incredibly safe no matter how you look at it. DMB, KOL, Jay-Z, Weezer are their safest top 40 headliners they've ever booked. Things start at the top and filter towards the bottom, and when you look at their recent adds (most of which have played the festival a bunch of times and are safe picks) you have their least exciting lineup in awhile.
Just because they booked Gwar and Circa Survive doesn't mean they are taking big risks.
they even book some of these trendy indie bands that play at festivals like pitchfork.
Also just because a band is playing Pitchfork and gets good reviews doesn't make it a trend. I don't listen to this music because it's "cool" I listen to it because I enjoy listening to it.

just because they had a lot of indie last year, you shouldn't expect it all the time. they got the best indie bands last year. this year there are really not that many more to get. i guess the ones that they could have had were not available. i'm sure there are some good indie bands on the lineup, maybe they're just ahead of you this year? also there are plenty of "risks" other than gwar, circa survive isn't even a risk.

maybe you do. but they are still trendy bands. it's just like pop, instead of radio/mtv play, the bands get pumped up by blogs and college radio. they are still trendy bands that are trying to cash in on a particular sound and will not last long.

sangreal, stop being a relentless idiot. If you can't admit to yourself that pitchfork has a great lineup and bonnaroo doesn't then I would suggest to stop posting on this. You're just making yourself look more and more stupid with each passing post here.

pitchfork has 4 bands i like. bonnaroo may have 40. no contest. pitchfork is a niche fest. bonnaroo has a variety of everything. no contest.

Indie doesn't stop with Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, there's plenty of bands they could have booked. Pavement was a big one they could have booked who have the spot open.
Also I've already checked out this lineup top to bottom. There's been a few discoveries like Local Natives and Mumford and Suns, but not much else. There's stuff I like, Japandroids, Neon Indian, The xx, but there's no way Bonnaroo is ahead of me.

no one knows why pavement is not playing. maybe they tried to book them, maybe they didn't. but there has to be a reason they're not playing. you can't get them all.

Who specifically are you referring to with "they?" All of the bands on the lineup? This lineup has such variety that I really have no idea what you're talk about here.
Also, please elaborate on this particular sound that will not last long.

Yeah everybody sounds like Lighting Bolt with that trendy new sound that they're trying to cash in on.
All of the following are trendy new hipster bands with the same sound, and none of these will last long: Pavement Raekwon Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Modest Mouse El-P Panda Bear St. Vincent

not talking about any bands in particular. just the whole indie thing. people like the stuff because it's not mainstream and trendy, but by so many people being of that mindset, it itself becomes a trend. not many indie bands last that long. any time a sound becomes popular there are immediate clones and then you have a bunch of bands that soundalike and it's all the rage for a while. then soon it's on to another sound that replaces it. rinse, wash and repeat.

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE PITCHFORK MUSIC FESTIVAL IN THIS THREAD!
Oh and booking a bunch of crappy bands does not in any way equate to taking risks. It just means that they failed as a music festival this year.

sangreal is right ....
you listed all the bands i like in your list. but even some of those it has become very trendy to like them. pavement is all the rage right now, it's suddenly cool to like raekwon again, etc. i've listened to raekwon since 95 and i don't think he's ever been as big as he is right now. it's just kind of funny that the indie kids have latched on to him. they will be over it in a year.

Who cares if it's become cool to like Raekwon or Pavement? It doesn't take away from the music just because some kids in skinny jeans are bumping only built 4 cuban linx or Slanted and Enchanted all of a sudden.

it doesn't matter. we got off track. the point is this niche festival is not better than bonnaroo. i argue that for any nishe festival, indie, jam band, whatever. it's not better than bonnaroo.
funny thing is I dont hear indie fans bitching about anything related to Pitchfork other than how fast the tickets sold out.
because all pitchfork books are indie bands and acts that are popular with indie kids. so of course, if that's all you care about, you're going to be happy with their lineup.

And I'm saying they've listened to their audience. Now, they have a much smaller audience than Bonnaroo to cater to, but I think they are an example of a fest that is pulling it off just about exactly right for their attendees.
If we want to get beyond just lineup Pitchfork could learn a lot from Bonnaroo on how to make the festival experience more enjoyable. I go for the bands but I hate the way they operate it.
