ever had this happen to you? i went to see as tall as lions open for cage the elephant last night at the orange peel in asheville. it was a very young crowd. they were totally disrespectful during atal performance. lots of shit talking, mocking, even booing. it basically ruined the show for me. which was a big disappointment since i drove an hour and a half just to see them. it upset me so much that i didn't stick around to see cage the elephant. i even considered leaving during the atal set. that's how bad it was. anyone else ever experience anything like that? in all the shows i have ever been too i have never had an expeience ruined like i did last night. so a big fuck you goes out to the teeny boppers in asheville last night.

this happened to me at The Shins last year, a ton of people were talking during Delta Spirit, it was really disrespectful and people were even talking during The Shins
welcome to 2010 - that behavior, I think, is present because it has been tolerated at home and in school. a lot of these kids have been babysat by MTV, Microsoft and Apple and haven't absorbed basic skills like how to act in public. We were all that age once and most of us (myself included) were fairly obnoxious, I'm certain. But a lot of these teenies have never had boundaries imposed upon them and think that everything exists solely for their enjoyment. When they start hitting the workforce the future of our nation really will be in trouble.
the behavior that you describe is everywhere. I saw the Avett brothers here in Atl on new years day and had a great show almost ruined by a couple of magpies behind me who talked incessantly (and loudly) during the whole show. I had one of my daughters with me (who does not act like that) and she was incredibly po'ed.
If you've been to a movie lately it's the same thing. pathetic.
The worst I ever had to deal with this was at a Cold War Kids show in 2007. It was a $5 show sponsored by a local radio station, so everyone and their mother were there. Other than during the 2 songs that were on the radio at the time (which everyone sung at the top of their lungs because they were the only ones they knew the words to), kids were talking to their friends, and yelling across the way to someone they knew, and running back and forth to the bar (no one was 21), and spilling on me of course. I did manage to give one girl a glare that stopped her in her tracks, but that was about it. It sucked. I was there to enjoy a band that I loved, but spent the whole time annoyed/pissed off.
And I agree with zenfnp. Kids these days have no respect.
I really wish the orange peel would do more 21 and up shows. The last time I had this happen was for Apollo Sunshine opening for Toots and the Maytals at the peel. These girls were standing right behind me carrying on a conversation as if nothing else was going on. Luckily they spent the entire Toots show trying to get the bartender to serve them (they were obviously about 16) but yeah it was really annoying.
Maybe artists need to follow in the footsteps of Tori Amos =)
Adam Lambert chastized his audience this week too.
haha one time at a show here she supposedly stopped to yell at a security guard because he kept stopping the front row from dancing and then after they all cheered and rushed the stage.

Hi guys. Brand new here and I had to post when I read this thread. This stuff happens to me all the time. Luckily at most of the shows I go to the music is loud enough to drown the annoyances out. But whenever I see RobertCray, it seems, that these type of idiots are all around me.
Now, if you know RobertCray then you know that this will not be the loudest show you've ever been to. To sing along at a show like this is completely uncalled for. Yet they do it. About 8 or 9 years ago my wife and I went to see Cray and were lucky enough have to front row center at a tiny, little theater.
The show started and wouldn't you know it, the lady sitting right next to me knew every word to every song and she sang them as loud as she could. I wouldn't be surprised if the band could hear her. She totally ruined what would have been an amazing night of music. This happens to me time and again, specifically with RobertCray. Maybe it's just more noticable due to the low decibal level of the music. I don't know. I definitely don't notice it as much when I see someone like Mule. It sure is annoying though.
Oh yeah, and this lady, she must've 40-45. So age is definitely not the only qualifier here.

When did Robert Cray change his name to RobertCray? ???

This has been a big point of contention for AC's Sundown in the City series here in Knoxville every spring. It has become overrun by high school pricks who come there just to be there. Most of the police presence is there to deal with intoxicated teeny boppers. There has been talk of making it an 18 and up thing, which would kind of defeat the original purpose of the series.
Went to see POTUSA there two years ago; one of the largest crowds I have ever seen on Market Square. My friend and I were wading through a sea of people on the side of the square, and this high school kid started forcibly pushing his way through, almost knocking over a woman who was pushing s stroller, and a guy saw him and hit him in the face (I would have done the same thing), which then set off a big fight and security issue. I don't care if I sound like an old man, kids these days need to understand that you can be crazy and obnoxious while still showing some respect to those around you.

Kudos to him. Seriously. It's not only the talking that gets to me. It's the I'm better than everyone else here mentality.
The two fine folks in front of me for The Avett Brothers at The Ryman were all over each other. Talking, kissing, talking, kissing. They never looked at the stage. Really? I am all for love, but not at my concert. Get a room.

The worst venue I've encountered for this is the Memorial Union in Madison. I was about three rows back from Great lake Swimmers and could barely hear them over all the talking. I had hoped by the age of college that most would be over this trait, but clearly not at an intitution known for its false senses of self-entitlement.
On the other hand: The Warehouse in La Crosse WI is all ages & outright caters to a high school crowd. I must've seen about 50 shows there and not once was their a problem of the audience talking over a band.
So, to me, its not so much an age thing as that false sense of entitlement.

\end rant
We have the same problem here at Thursday At The Square, a free concert series every summer. I don't even go anymore it's so bad. It's why I avoid free concerts in general, it's more a place for high schoolers to meet up and hang out rather than a place to see a concert.
But then this gets into there isn't much for high schoolers(or people under 21) to do in town in the first place so I can't really blame them.

^Same here in Knoxville, NoD. Most shows are at least 18+, and the downtown scene (which is the ONLY scene in Knoxville to speak of) isn't very teeny bopper friendly. What happened to eating corn behind the movie theatre and moonshine-fueled field parties? That's what we did in Memphis when I was growing up...
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
I would rather people talk then yell every word to every song like when i saw The Avett Brothers this year. Worst thing i've ever experienced.
You and I have not had good experiences at The Avett Brothers. Not sure if having sex in front of me, or yelling out the words to the songs by you is worse.
6/18: Phish in Hartford 6/25: Phish in Camden 7/2-7/4: Nateva 7/17: God Street Wine at Irving Plaza 7/23-7/25: String Cheese at Red Rocks!! 8/17-8/18: Phish at Jones Beach 9/3: Rush at PNC
This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.

I sat in the balcony at a Wilco show over the weekend, and the late-30s couple next to me insisted on standing up for the entire show, even though no one else in the balcony was standing, and the people seated behind them had asked them nicely if they would please sit down. I think they just had it in their head that rock concert = standing, even though we were in the balcony of a very nice concert hall usually used for symphony performances.
Now, all the people on the floor were standing, and I think that's totally fine - there was a consensus. There was also a consensus when the whole balcony stood for the encore.
I blame it on the fact that we've become a home-entertainment society; with our computers and our big screen TVs, most people don't go out to a show very much, and when they do, they act as they would at home - talking over the entertainment, walking in and out, texting, etc. It's as if we've forgotten how to act in public.
