Phillies aren't fairing much better. 3 years/$26 million for Ruiz? Ruben Amaro, Jr. has lost his damn mind.
And 2/$16m for Marlon Byrd. Not terrible if he can replicate last year, but dude's getting old.
The Byrd signing is much worse in my mind. Sure the 3rd year for Ruiz isn't ideal, but there aren't many viable catching options out there. McCann will either resign in ATL, or head to the AL. I sure don't want Pierzynski, and the Phils best catching prospect may no longer be a catcher due to head injuries. Ruiz is still above average defensively and tends to handle the pitching staff pretty well.
Byrd on the other hand is old, and has not had consistent success. I'm pretty hesitant to believe he will put up similar numbers, not to mention he is one more positive test away from a 100 game suspension. If this was a signing to supplement a bigger move I'd be OK with it, but it doesn't look like that's the case. RAJ has really done a sh*t job handling this franchise the past few years.

I agree with pretty much all of this. I will say, though, that rooting for Byrd is fun. He's an older guy and he played his ass off on a bad Mets team until they shipped him to Pitt to chase a ring. Assuming he stays healthy you'll like the guy, it's just weird he got a 2 year deal as a 36 year old who turns 37 next season.

3 years for 26 mil, come on Bill -- entirely too much for a guy who only hits close to .300 on greenies, adding in the amount of time they cycle Kratz in.
The Byrd deal was awful. RAJ keeps treating this team like its a playoff contender that only needs one more piece. That ship sailed after the NLDS loss in 2012. But until we can rid ourselves of the curse that is Ryan Howard's contract, we'll be stuck making stop-gap deals like these. Hopefully Hamels gets SOME run support next year.
I personally would have made a play for Giancarlo Stanton, but what are you going to do. Seems Rob Ford isn't the only high powered person smoking crack.
McCann fits right in with the Yankees. It thrills me to no end to have the douchiest catcher playing for the douchiest team. I actually hope he sucks and Gattis gets his sh*t together for a full year next year.
Here is where I miss both the thumbs down button and rdk's presence. 'Cause he would give me a fat one for the above comment.

I'm actually surprised the general Red Sox fan consensus(atleast the ones that know what they are talking about, and not just sad about losing his pretty face) is sort of what ever. It's not the a slap in the face like Johnny Damon was. Damon, unlike Ellsbury, put on the act that he bled Sox. Everyone has know all along Ellsbury is a Boras guy who was going to follow the money. I've felt like this was coming since about 08. I also don't think Jackie Bradley Jr. Is as far off from exceeding Ellsbury in production as some might think. Ellsbury would have only made sence for the Sox for a 2 maybe 3 year deal, similar to the Saltalamachia situation, and we all knew that wasn't going to happen. People are expecting the he's a jerk for going to the Yankees reaction but it's just not there coming off the series win and situation the Yankees are in. Assuming they don't sign Cano, the best available 2b is Ben Zobrist. As an opponent I'd much rather face Ellsbury/Zobrist than Granderson/Cano. If they do end up resigning Cano than sure it's a great move, short term anyways.

I hate to be that guy, but who do you think Johnny Damon's agent was?

No I know, I just think that situation caught people off guard and the rivalry was much more intense after back to back ALCS's.
We all knew Ellsbury was going to go to the place which paid him the most money. He had no loyalty to the Red Sox, and never even hinted at having any. The Yankees have the most cash, a sense of desperation, and holes in the outfield needing to be filled.
People will probably be bummed out at first because Ellsbury is a proven commodity who switched to the arch-rivals. But if Bradley pans out as what the talking heads have made him out to being - I like what Boston's future has. A good talent, younger, and much more cost effective. Meanwhile I think Ellsbury will have a couple good years in New York and then become a crippling mess - racking up injuries and very overpaid.

I see Ellsbury being another Crawford and having difficulty staying healthy. Good move on the Sox to let him go!

Yeah the injury history scares me but I think that having a legit leadoff hitter will do wonders for the offense. Also having an outfield of Gardner, Ellsbury and Soriano/Ichiro would probably be a big improvement. I think Ichiro will be a bench player who only comes in for defense and pinch running at this point in his career but I'm pretty sure that they will try Soriano in RF.

As far as Cano goes they may be the only team willing to put up the 300 mil he wants as of now. I wouldn't be surprised to see him lower his asking price to go to a contender.
