Manny Machado with 2 Homers and a Triple in his first 2 games.
God it's fun to be an O's fan this year. Watching just about every game for the past 10 years is finally paying off. Still waiting for the epic collapse though.
Has any non-partial fan here been to the new Yankee Stadium. How gaudy is that thing?
It is just a more updated version of the old stadium. I liked it when I went in May, but I will admit I like the feel of Citifield better even if the team sucks.

Yeah, I agree, Citi Field's layout is much better than Yankee Stadium
I still can't believe that the National are still considering shutting down Strasburg. They might have a chance that their predacesors never did...go to a World Serise.

Well, I don't think potentially blowing his arm out for the rest of his career is worth that.

Real TOUGH former pitchers who think every pitcher should throw a complete game seem to hate this decision.
Well, they used to throw complete games every 3-4 games and pitch over 300 innings (at least in the 60's/70's), so they kind of have a point. I think shutting a guy down who is your best player is insane, but then again I didn't sign a sh*t-ton of money to that arm.
If you go into the playoffs and you don't have your best weapon, you're going to lose. Those mediocre teams that have won it the past decade all did so because they had a player putting forth a transcendent performance for an extended period. The Nats need Strasburg to be the type of player to pitch 3 times a playoff series and shut their opponents down. If he's not capable of doing that in October, might as well sit him and hope his arm strengthens.

The simple solution is clearly faking an injury and putting him on the DL until mid-September, ramping him back up, and then having him pitch in the playoffs.

But that's the problem. If they go with the medical advice, the idea is to shut him down. As in nothing until the start of next year's Spring training. Going every 6th or 7th day, skipping starts, or stopping and then coming back for postseason are all options that defeat the purpose of shutting him down.
They either need to put out a number (or a range say 160-180) and stick to it, or say we'll play it by ear depending on how Stras feels and any doctors' assessments they get. I just don't like that it's hanging out there and I can see it starting to get on the other players' nerves, because they're asked about it everywhere they go around here.
I still think they can go far this year without Strasburg and maybe even get lucky with JZimm and Gonzalez going 1-2 and praying for something out of Edwin Jackson and Ross Detwiler. Not a great strategy for a World Series but it could happen.
disqualified too. This was poor planning. If they had started him every 7 days they might have him for the playoffs which is critical to winning them. But you never know how a player is going to react to stretches of inactivity. You would think that spreading out his starts would be more conducive to staying sharp rather than shutting him down for weeks at a time.
Wouldn't shutting him down now for a month accomplish the 180 innings limit? Why wouldn't that work?
My understanding is that the reason for the 180 innings (or whatever number - still haven't heard data) is to have time to fully rest the arm from that point until say February. To start him back up again would mean an additional shut down period at the beginning of next season. But then, the only people I hear talk on this don't know what the hell they're talking about (yeah, Stephen A. Smith, I'm talking to you!)

Again, I'm going with Mike Rizzo and Davey Johnson and their hordes of medical consultants. Starting every 7 days just doesn't seem effective for a starting pitcher's rhythm. Especially if you're then going to ask him to pitch every third or fourth day all of a sudden in October. Too many what-ifs across the board for there to be a right answer. I just know Rizzo/Johnson know a lot more about baseball than any of us.

I think the innings limit is more a worry about stretching out his arm too far. You have build up your arm up to where you can pitch 220-240 innings a year.
I'm not sure about the actual mechanics of shutting a pitcher down in the middle of a year, but I can't imagine it would change much. I'd defer to anyone with actual knowledge on that point though.
