I feel exactly the same way you do. I don't understand how people don't get it. Headliners are by design intended to draw large crowds of people.
"People put way too much emphasis on "selling out."" --- Those people are AC/Superfly and the only reason there is a Bonnaroo is because those guys have figured out how to make money putting this thing together. They want, and will get, big name headliners in an effort to "sell out" Bonnaroo. That means MMJ probably doesn't crack the 1,2,3 or 4 spots for X.
I don't question that MMJ is musically talented enough to headline, they are. But Sasquatch, Voodoo and DOA Langerado aren't the same as Bonnaroo, Coachella or Glastonbury. I really hope they are there, I hope they have a great spot and I'll be there loving it but I don't think they'll headline.
I really think they could pull off a Sunday headlining slot at this point. They're getting big enough, and they're already huge within the Bonnaroo universe. They were 9th billed in 2008 and they've completely exploded in popularity since that lineup was released. They may not have the mainstream draw of Dave Matthews' Band, or the rabid following of Phish fans, but given how ridiculously well received their 2008 show was, I could easily see it happening. They're too big to be pre-headliners at this point. I could see them being the 4th-billed act on the lineup as the headliner, after the Friday and Saturday headliners and the big latenight act - sort of like WSP's placement in 2008. They're five-time Bonnaroo vets, and Bonnaroo's always been good to its long-time vets (Phil Lesh incident not withstanding). They're already headliners at other mid-sized fests drawing 50-60,000, I don't think it's that big of a jump to picture them as a headliner at Roo as well.

Quick question: Do Widespread Panic routinely sell out shows and big venues? Because they've headlined multiple times and the last time I saw them in my area a year or two ago they were co-headlining/opening for Allman's and the audience wasn't even 1/4 full.
I feel like if Widespread can headline than MMJ certainly could. I know Widespread has a big jam following but still......if we're debating on whether or not a headliner has to sell out a ton of their shows then maybe we should look at the attendance numbers for Phil & Friends, Tom Petty, and Widespread. I don't think they sell out all of their shows.
I don't know if Widespread Panic sell out but a quick look implies to me they sell more tickets that they sell more tickets than My Morning Jacket. Comparing WSP's to MMJ's last tour WSP mostly plays larger venues than MMJ or plays three night runs in smaller ones. The only venue in common between the two tours is the Greek in LA, which is one of the places I saw MMJ. First of all the ticket prices are the same or very similar (I can't remember) at 49.94. WSP's show is still a month away and according to ticketmaster the best available single ticket is Sec. B Row W. I would say this is within 5-10 rows of where people were when MMJ played there. I assume WSP will surpass that in the month before the show.

I thought there was a possibility that MMJ could play sunday until the last two years. Phish then DMB, it seems that Roo is trying to book larger bands on Sunday to keep people around through the last headliner. It would not surprise me one bit if the sunday spot went to a band like Radiohead, Phish (again) or Neil Young.
^I pretty much agree with what you said. While MMJ could hold down a headlining spot with ease I don't think they are going to get it this year. AC/S is looking to get headliners that are going to bring more people to the fest. A lot of the die hard MMJ fans already go to Bonnaroo. I honestly would prefer they get another late-night. A headline spot would actually cut down on their set length. MMJ as headliners is bound to happen soon but not next year.

^i agree with this. everyone seems to want them to headline, and i get that they're probaly earned it, but i would just personally prefer to see them Late Night. then we get one more headliner!

I think if they do play Late Night for the third time, then they're going to have to be promoted to What Stage. They at least deserve that.
I can argue against it. Jay-Z =/= MMJ. He is waaay bigger than MMJ.
I didn't say anything about them being bigger than anyone else. This isn't a popularity contest. I said that they deserve it. Read more closely next time.
While I love me some damn MMJ, I don't think 'Roo would give them a Late Night What set. What I'd like is either MMJ Late Night Which or MMH Headliner What.

[/quote] Yeah I'm aware of what you said. If we're allowed to throw around the word deserve because you liked a band's performance at past Bonnaroo's then I'll just go ahead and say The Black Keys deserve the late night What Stage because they have been absolutely awesome the last two times they have played Bonnaroo. Kings of Leon deserved Friday This Tent at 3:30 because they're douches that make mediocre music. Do you see what I'm saying?

^Truth...but, also, I think it would be unfair to ignore the working-class element of MMJ doing 'Roo year after year...but that could be said about several bands.

right, deserve = earned
late night what would be an acceptable consolation to no headline spot, but I still want them to headliner

I do, but I'm not basing it solely on their past Bonnaroo performances. They've worked their way up in the music world, too. Being nominated for a Grammy, playing 'SNL,' etc. I think they've accomplished enough to deserve it, not to mention kind of what karosko said about them working their way up in the rankings at Bonnaroo. I want them to headline and think they could.
There are countless bands who have accomplished these feats who would have no business headlining Bonnaroo.
Bonnaroo is the only large festival My Morning Jacket could possibly headline at this time, and the only reason is the "home team" argument. I fully support this happening. There would be no chance of this happening at Coachella or Lollapalooza, because they really aren't there yet on the hugeness scale.
