Black Star and A Tribe Called Quest needs to be the two this year. And after listening to his latest album, I'm open to giving the doucher Kanye another chance. I'm sure AC/Superfly have already contacted him and I'm wondering what the exchange went like:
AC: Hey Kanye! Your latest album was amazing! KW: YO ASH! YOU KNOW THAT SONG RUNAWAY? YEAH, WELL YOU'RE THE DOUCHEBAG I WAS TALKING ABOUT! AC: Alright Kanye, be good buddy (click).
I would be ecstatic if ATCQ and Black Star were on the bill. I'd be equally ecstatic about Kanye, but I can imagine that would not go over very well on here. And I definitely don't see it happening.
So, should I check out Curren$y or is that just bullhonkey like OFWGKTA? Bear in mind, I usually prefer stuff that sounds more old-school like Mos Def than new-school like Lil Wayne.

Curren$y's Pilot Talk is way better than Earl's album, but Earl seems to be really talented and once he chooses better lyrical content he'll probably be great. I still have to get Pilot Talk II.
Everyone who hasn't grabbed Curren$y - Pilot Talk or Big KRIT - KRIT Wuz Here yet really needs to get both.

this is my first ever post, i have attended the last 4 roo's and plan on making it this year so i can say i have seen half. i agree with everything i see. currensy is my favorite rapper at the moment.i caught i show with him and big krit in charlotte would love to see outkast but not sure how possible it is. wiz khalifa puts on a great show as well - he destroyed the orange peel. j cole is about to blow up. jay-z knew what he was doing when he put him on the team.

Currensy's Pilot Talk was easily one of the best rap albums to come out this year, Pilot Talk II is apparently a winner as well, but I haven't checked it out yet.
Wu-Tang would have to be a late night/last act. As a group it is common knowledge they are perpetually late, anyone scheduling the fest would take this in to account. Not sure about Wu-Massacre's draw, but Meth and Red performed in a bar/club when they came around here a month or so ago, so I wouldn't put them as a potential What/Which act, probably a late night as well if they were on the bill.
As far as this year's biggest hip hop act, Black Star would be great in my opinion. Its been said a million times that Mos Def is due on the farm, but with Talib, it would be incredible. I think Lauryn Hill is a realistic possibility for a late afternoon or pre headliner spot on the What Stage, as well.

i am loving all the curren$y support on here, did not know there were that many fans on the board. ive barely listened to him at all since i saw that show a month ago cause i got kind of burned out by him (no pun intended), but ive been bumping him all night now since i made that post.
if he and wiz did a late night set together it would be the sickest shit imaginable. how fly is one of my favorite mixtapes ever, plus theyve done enough other songs together that they would definitely have enough material do an solid hour-hour and a half long set
my friend and I were talking about which hip hop acts could headline roo, he said outkast and atcq, but I don't think either of them is a headliner. Drake is which stage. Jay and Kanye have been late night What obviously. Is there any rapper that would be in the top three right now? Em or Weezy maybe?
OutKast would be at least considered a semi-headliner, probably in the same boat as Jay/Beasties as Bishop said. No way they play anything less than What stage in a primetime slot.
ATCQ could easily be the top-billed hip hop name on the lineup, but I agree that they wouldnt be a top 4-5 act, probably more like top 10. I would still be more than pleased if theyre the top hip hop draw.
Outside of Jay, Kanye, OutKast and Eminem (not even considering Wayne a possibility), I think the only other act that would warrant a top 5 spot would be Dre & Friends. Black Star, The Roots or the full Wu-Tang Clan could also probably hold down What on a preheadlining set.
Realistically I see it breaking down something like this:
Top tier headlining capacity type acts (probably dont get any of these) OutKast Kanye West Eminem Dr. Dre (& friends)
Upper tier pre HL/which close/high profile LN tent type acts (probably get 1-2 of these) A Tribe Called Quest Black Star The Roots Big Boi Wu-Tang Clan/Wu-Massacre/Meth & Red Ludacris Drake Mos Def Nas
Mid-tier daytime/lower profile LN tent type acts (probably get 2-3 of these) Lupe Fiasco Talib Kweli Q-Tip Cee-Lo Green N.E.R.D. De La Soul Common Immortal Technique Clipse Wiz Khalifa Atmosphere Aesop Rock
Lower tier daytime/thursday type acts (probably get 2-3 of these) Curren$y Freddie Gibbs J.Cole Big Sean Chip tha Ripper Del tha Funkee Homosapien/Hieroglyphics P.O.S. MURS People Under the Stairs Mac Miller
My prediction is something along the lines of The Roots, Big Boi, Lupe, N.E.R.D., Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and J.Cole.
I think hip hop is making itself a cornerstone in the Bonnaroo community so I would the appearance of everybody but headliners by one. So instead of just ATCQ and Black Star, we can also have Big Boi and The Roots. And everybody wins. Yay!!!!!
I've been thinking about this a lot, because as crazy as it seems, the level of hip-hop at Bonnaroo is often what seals the deal for me.
- I think we get the Roots. It's been 4 years since they last played, they're getting a ton of buzz right now on account of HIGO making every year-end list by every publication, they'll have more time off in the summer, etc. I really think it happens, possibly a split show with John Legend.
- I think we get Raekwon/Ghostface. Ghost's new album drops in a week, Raekwon's will be out early next year, and I wouldn't be shocked to see them tour together off the back of it.
- I think we get Big Boi. I'm not holding my breath for Outkast, and I think he makes a perfect festival style act. Since Sir Luscious Leftfoot came out too late last year for him to make the festival push (aside from Pitchfork), I think you see him doing that circuit this year.
- People keep forgetting to mention Brother Ali, and that's a shame. He's one of, if not the best live MCs out there, and I have an odd feeling he'll make an appearance.
- I don't think you see any repeat acts this year: no Kid Cudi, Wale, etc.
- For smaller acts, I think J.Cole, Curren$y, and Wiz Khalifa are the most likely, based off of buzz and "fit."
- I don't think Drake makes the cut. Bonnaroo doesn't really book chick rap, do they? The closest I could think of was B.o.B., and he was booked off the basis of his strong mixtape work, not the garbage top-40 cuts he put out later.
- People also don't mention Freeway enough, which is odd. I think there's a strong Rhymesayer presence this year, sort of how Def Jux has had large portions of their roster there in previous years. In addition to Brother Ali, I could see a Freeway/Jake One set, maybe a return by Atmosphere.
In my fantasy world, the hip-hop lineup looks like this:
- The Roots - Big Boi - Ghostface Killah & Raekwon - Brother Ali - Freeway - J.Cole - Curren$y - Wiz Khalifa
You'd have the Roots for a pre-headliner on the Which Stage like in 2007, Big Boi with a pre-headliner/late-day slot on the What, the rest for tent shows, with Freeway/J.Cole/Curren$y/Wiz Khalifa potentials for Thursday.
Up that list by three or four and I think Ghostface/Raekwon make a good late night tent act. I think they need 2-3 main stage acts (not necessarily headliners), 2-3 late night tent performers, and 3-4 day tent performers or Thursday night bands.
Main stage-ATCQ, Roots, BlackStar Late night-Big Boi, Ghostface/Raekwon, Lupe Fiasco Tent- the rest of your lineup

if big boi is there pleaseeeee bonnaroo make it a late night. i just cant imagine hearing shutterbugg with the sun beating down on me. that whole album is better suited for a night-time performance. also i agree with everything Vick said and would be more than pleased if that was the hip-hop lineup that we got.

Eh, I think you're overestimating the amount of hip-hop they generally have. By your count we'd be getting between 7 and 10 hip-hop acts. In 2010 they had 6 such acts, in 2009 they had 4, in 2008 they had 4, in 2007 they had 5, in 2006 they had 7. So only once in the past 5 years have there been more than 6 hip-hop acts on the bill, correct? Additionally, I doubt you'll see 2-3 stage hip-hop acts in the same year - by my calculations, there have only been 9 hip-hop acts to play on any stage at Bonnaroo (Jay-Z, Nas/Marley, Beasties, Kanye West, the Roots 2x, Jurassic 5 2x, Cypress Hill), so I don't think you get more than 2 there.
I had 8 on my list, and I thought it was stretching. Like I said, I could see the Roots as a pre-headliner, I could see a Freeway > Ali > Ghost & Rae late night, Big Boi as a last-of-the-day tent or What stage act, and an assortment of J.Cole/Khalifa/Curren$y Thursday.
If you're correct then probably the band that won't be there will be ATCQ. However, I think Black Star makes it, or least hope they do. I thought there were more last year. Probably thinking that because of Jay-Z and all the pop crap they had. Oh well, at least 2011 can be the year they up the ante.
Eh, I think you have to sometimes ignore things like this. I mean, if a band isn't selling out arenas/amphitheaters then it's probably not headlining the fest, but some bands have a draw among the concentrated music loving Bonnaroo crowd that they wouldn't have elsewhere. For instance, when I catch the Roots (in NYC/New England) they don't usually play at places that hold more than maybe a few thousand tops, but they commanded the Which stage in 2007 and had one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. Same with Nas & Marley last year - when they came around here, they were playing a club that holds 1500. These things don't always necessarily translate. I think Ghost/Rae/Meth could command a stage spot, though not necessarily a pre-headliner.
I think Wu-Tang(if they could be on time) or Wu-Massacre could have a stage spot, but I doubt pre-headliner. My comments were basically concerning a Meth & Red show, which I doubt would get a stage spot, but I suppose its possible. With the exception of Wu-Massacre, which could have virtually any time slot, I think Wu as a whole group or Meth & Red would probably be better suited for a late night. I would prefer Wu-Massacre or Ghost & Rae, myself, mostly because Ghost & Rae are my favorites of the group and when you have the whole Wu-Tang on stage it can kind of turn into a clusterfuck.
I'd also support a strong Rhymesayer's presence. I've never really been able to get into Brother Ali. Atmosphere is one of my all time favorites. Freeway/Jake One & P.O.S. would be cool too.

But all of Wu Tang would also bring the most talented, GZA. Can AC/S just be blunt with them? "Hey look here's the deal. We only care about GZA, Rae, and Ghost now. Sorry guys it's not 1995 anymore."

Apparently he is "too busy" or something like that, but I think its more to it than that. They have had some issues in the past, most recently over money and some issues around 8 Diagrams, but I can't remember the specifics right now.
