NoDepression, you're right that Daft Punk is big in the 17-30 age group, and you're definitely right in that things aren't measured in platinum records anymore, but still: midnight is onto something by pointing out how many people were there this year. I'm underqualified to compare it to past Bonnaroos (this year was my 1st), but I will say that it was staggering how many people were there specifically for Jigga. What if they book, say, Eminem next year as a headliner (as much as I would HATE that)...There would be a lot of college kids/teenagers there specifically for Eminem who don't know a great deal about music they can't hear on a major radio station. They will not hear Daft Punk on a major radio station, and thus will probably not know who Daft Punk is. And Eminem is just an example that can be substituted with anybody who's well-known in a mainstream sense. With how mainstream-friendly the headliners were this year, I think there's a good possibility (unfortunately) that we'll see something similar next year, in which case there WILL be people on the farm who don't know who Daft Punk is.
Dude, you are talking out of your ass. Just stop. Daft Punk has been around for close to 2 decades. People that are prone to go to music festivals know who they are.
Edit: That goes for the teen crowd especially. I grew up with Daft Punk but my little brother's crowd is much more into them then I ever was.

Come on, man. I admit that Lady Gaga could possibly happen (and I truly hope it does not), but there is zero chance that the other two will be booked for Bonnaroo. We talk about being surprised by the presence of certain bands/acts because they do not "fit the mold" all the time, but those two go WAY beyond anything we have ever been surprised by at Bonnaroo. Not happening.

Prove it. Not trying to be a contrarian; I'm just trying to think like Bonnaroo's organizers seem to be as of now. That is, show me the numbers that indicate that Daft Punk is in the top tier of touring acts on a scale comparable to Kings of Leon or the Dave Matthews Band. Bonnaroo isn't going to book a headliner for 80,000 people based on forum suppositions that young people are into them. They're going to look at quantifiable numbers. Again, I'd love to see them on the What Stage, but it's a stretch for an electronic act, even one as popular as Daft Punk.

Daft Punk headlined Lollapalooza, one of the biggest festivals in the world.

Ever heard of the 2007 alive tour?
No one's tour compares with the DMB, they are the undisputed number 1 touring act of the last two decades. Still there was a long line of cars leaving during him.

I think Gaga has good chances of headlining next year. She's going on a huge extravangant U.S. tour in the spring. She has claimed her next C.D. will be the one that defines her career. And she loves festivals. I remember someone posting pics of her pre-fame at bonnaroo. I could totally see this happening. There's far more acts I'd rather see headline, but if she was there I definitely would not miss her set

I'm not talking out of my ass. I'm just trying to be realistic about it and, as the other poster said, think like the organizers of the festival must be right now. The point being that a lot more Americans don't know who Daft Punk is than don't know who Jay-Z is. Yeah, people already predisposed to going to festivals or to Bonnaroo specifically would be pretty excited about Daft Punk, but Daft Punk might not be the type of artist that would attract people who wouldn't otherwise go. That's all I'm saying, that and that the festival organizers might be thinking of that. I know this sounds like BS, but trust me, it's the kind of thing that they'll probably be thinking about.
Don't get me wrong, of course I'd be pumped to see Daft Punk on the lineup. Just trying to temper my expectations, regarding both whether or not they even play and what kind of time/stage they'll be given.

Friday: Wilco early, Radiohead headliner, Arcade Fire late night Saturday: White Stripes early, U2 headliner, Daft Punk late night Sunday: Taylor Swift early, My Morning Jacket headliner

fuck man.... I wasn't going to read these threads this year, after the speculation and high hopes made me disappointed about the 2010 headliners. But I finally gave into the curiosity and boredom.
I wanted to think Roger Waters, but he'll be in europe, so he's out.
A radiohead return would be epic, but I'm not holding my breath. It has been said though, that a new album should be done sometime this year. Which would mean touring next year, so it's within the realm of possibility.
I have not seen or heard any evidence of a daft punk tour, so I'm not investing any hope into that until I see otherwise.
U2 have been touring well over a year nonstop, I can't imagine they'll be doing any more shows by next summer. I'd count them out. Thank god...
If the White Stripes are back I think they will be there, and I personally think they're ready for a headlining slot. I mean, if KOL could headline, the White Stripes should be able to. I think they could hold down Friday or Sunday no problem.
And I really think there's a pretty good chance we'll see Gaga on the farm.
So, I guess my prediction would be Fri: Gaga Sat:Radiohead Sun: White Stripes That would be a very happy Bonnaroo for me.
Throw in a Deftones late night and it might even beat the nearly impossible to rival 09 line-up for me

U2 had to cancel a bunch of dates including their big spot at Glasto. I'm thinking they're going to be touring around this time next year to make up those dates and possibly headline Glastonbury, so Bonnaroo is well within the realm of reason.
I'm not against jacket playing at all. If they do, I will check them out to see what all the fuss is about. But so far, just can't get too into them. Doesn't peak my interest. But good luck you guys.

Don't know why I didn't think of this before, but: Eminem.
I wouldn't have thought he could do Roo 2 years ago. But I mean, if a band like Gwar can play roo, why can't Eminem? His new CD is pretty excellent. People love him, he'd be a huge draw. And he's a talented guy and he'll put on a hell of a show. Scratch Gaga. I replace her with Eminem for Fri night headliner

Sorry about the "talking out.." thing. That was quite rude of me. Anyway...
I follow you but I think you are underestimating their appeal. I would think booking an act that rarely appears live but has an almost mythic reputation built around their live shows is exactly the kind of act the organizers would want.
Also, the organizers aren't just looking for mass appeal. Dave Matthews Band is accessible to their fan base and tour often. Daft Punk are reclusive. When they played at Coachella in 06 it was their first US show in 9 years. Then they headlined Lollapalozza in 07. That's some bragging rights! Bonnaroo got criticism, especially on this board(if memory serves), because they didn't book them.
Who knows how much their musical score for the new Tron movie will effect their mainstream appeal but I would take it as a positive sign. If they do tour in 2011 and Bonnaroo doesn't have them. I would bet my life that a competing festival will.
Like most people here, I would put them late night. In either Jay-Z or The Flaming Lips' spot from this year.

Good points, all. I can agree with that. To be clear, I think it would be an enormous gaffe by the booking committee if Daft Punk were available to them for 2011 and they passed. I was speaking more in regards to the people who said they should play Saturday night, What Stage, late night set and that everyone would be there. That said, I could see them in Jay-Z's spot from this year (11-1:30 or so) and I could definitely see them in The Flaming Lips' spot.

^ I hate how possible that seems. Half the lineup is awesome, but I do not care for almost half of the artists on your list (Katy Perry, Akon, Lady Gaga, Dixie Chicks, Maroon 5). And yet, at the same time, I could see the headliner lineup being pretty similar to that. Oh well, at least there is an awesome band each night that I'd be pumped about (and 2 on Friday).
