@ Tangerinetrees, what is holding you back? meg, If cajan-n-saudi has not comment yet, he might not be going. Burning Man is not something you do at the last minute. It takes a lot of research and planning, which cannot or should not be done at the last minute. Yet it is amazing experience! Life changing I say.
@idio, the pics of your shoes look awesome, would of like to see them walking through the night at Roo. I say RV's are for pussies and I mean that in the nicest way. What I mean is, rented RVs are kind of frowned upon. If you gonna do it, do it out in the open, Ruff-It. There are other ways to provided yourself with shleter besides a tent and some rebar. Like Monkey Love Huts aka a quonset hut, or a hexayurt. meg, where in Florida? You are right one must be a little crazy to spend a week camping in the dessert, but it is so awesome!

It's on my list of festivals to do but won't happen this year and probably not next year either. I have friends who have gone and loved it so eventually I'll make it out there.
Alas, I am still not going this year. It lies (as always) right at the end of the first month of school and i'm just unable to get away for that long. Trust me, it wouldn't be last minute... I've had over four years of planning for it! All the equipment is ready, the schedule just can't accommodate it.
I hear ya Cajun! I know of a lot people miss Burning Man because of school. Meg said you live in Florida? Where abouts? Have you ever been to any of the regional burns down here. Like Pre Heat and after burn? I've never been, but hear they are cool.

Scrog: SCHOOL! I'm only 2 semesters from graduating; soon enough Burning Man will be mine!!! I tried to plan it out once airport/car rental/etc it gets pricey but once school is out the way it will get better After graduation: Amsterdam in May and Bonnarooooooooooooo in June - then I have to get a serious job haha
I haven't been to either but they are considerably closer than the playa! I'm in the panhandle; Crestview to be precise.
I should clarify, the school isn't a problem for me exactly but for my kids. Kind of hard to get have someone watch them for a week in school season. Eventually I'll make it there....

I would love to do BM also, but is not a trip I can take lightly. I am planning on going to Alchemy in N. Georgia in Oct. to break me into the burn scene, I'm really looking forward to it!
MPH, Alchemy, from what I hear, is a great way to get ready for Burning Man. And is a great substitute for the ones who can make the trip to Black Rock City. I would like to hear about your experience! I would also like to get a small group together for Burning Man 2011.
If anybody cares, I have been on the fence for this and I can no longer take it, so I have made the choice to make my yearly homage to see the Man. In other words I am going to Burning Man!!!!
and there is room for one more, coming from the East coast!

Burning Man is definitely on my to do list, I might see if i can pull it off in 2012, if not maybe once I am done with my bachelors in 3-4 years. It definitely will take some planning.
^^^^be the change you want to be my friend, if you want it, if you really want it, you can have it next year!
as for me, the stars are in alignment this weekend. Had a good conversation with one of my Stag brothers(Stag camp is my camp), bought my ticket, and work offered me an OT shift, which came out to double pay(in others words funded my trip).
It is here! Headed out tomorrow morning. Built me a Hexayurt with a sun roof, well I painted a sky on the ceiling with a sun. Costumes check, sunscreen check, tickets check, open mind check! Lets get this mutherfu*cker started. Will give a synopsis when I get back in two weeks in anybody is interested, until then, In the dust we trust.

I didn't make it to BRC this year (went in '06 & '08), but spent the long weekend at Camp Reggae, instead (which gets my laid back, mellow-vibe festival of the season award).
Yes, I agree that Burning Man is one of those "bucket list" experiences! Just research it well if you're a BM virgin; "radical self-reliance" is not just some catchy phrase bantered about!
But to jump down that rabbit hole after a week long road trip from Georgia.... pegs the alive meter!
Do not go if you do not like being hot, cold, rainy, windy, dusty and lack of sleep, Okay with that said, What a great quacking week!
Monday it rained. Yeah it f'ing rained in the desert! then a double rainbow, what does it mean? Then it got cold. Monday was set up camp day and rest day. I did get out of camp and walked over to see the Man and the Temple. The Man looked amazing! The temple was an awesome art project, but lacked being a temple, in the sense of what I am use to a temple being. This years theme was Metropolis and Temple designers wanted to build something to contrast Metropolis, so they designed a temple that contradicts a Metropolis and build a Temple representing a Canyon and Mountains. Which they did a great job creating that feeling/look it just was not a Temple.
Tuesday I slept in until almost noon and then started drinking and cooking some bacon. This is the day we, our camp, do our meet n greet. We have close to 100 member camp and this is the day we all meet each other. I did a rendition of Chuck Berry's, "My ding-a-ling". People loved it! After that it was time to. "Cut the Cheese!" As a gift to the Playa we gifted out grilled cheeses. one of our awesome camp mates, the Jason, built a 11' tall working guillotine. We cooked grilled cheese and then let the crowd, with supervision, hit a button and have their grilled cheese cut by the guillotine, it was called, "Cut the Cheese". It worked better than expected, no digits were lost, and people loved it! Time for fungi.
Wednesday Temperature was only into the 90's today. Had a great time last night and was able to sleep in, The Hexayurt Rocks! Walked around the city some today and took some pics. It was Reggae at Shadyville. Good tunes with some great drinks! That night went to a show by Mutator. Left there and went to the Thunderdome for the first time in 3 years. The Thunderdome is just that, Think of Mad Max, "Two men enter, one man leaves." Think large dome, two people and strapped to bouncy cables, each has a weapon. You are pulled back and then released and fly towards your opponent and into a fight. I climbed up the side of the dome and had amazing seats for some cool fights. Not sure how that night ended.
Thursday Again I got to sleep in, Temperatures into the 100s today. More alcohol. another night of, "Lauren, from Boulder Colorado, are you ready to, Cut, the, Cheese?" this night I had the bullhorn and I was orchestrating the activities of cutting your grilled cheeses with an 11' guillotine. More fungi. Went out and saw Megavolt, who is a guy in a metal suit and plays with a Tesla coil and fake lightning. Was going to see Bassnectar, but the Playa fried his sound card. Still it was a good night! Got back to camp in the wee hours and set off some Asian floating lanterns. Then watched the sun rise.
Friday Again slept in, most people were out of bed around 9am-10am. the heats is that bad. But in a hexayurt the temperature is about 15-20 degrees less, so everyday I got to sleep in. This day I drank a lot and smoked a lot and then took it easy and prepared for Saturday. The weather has been beautiful and today was the first day of wind and dust. I needed that or we all needed hat today/night. Finished he night with midnight Poutine. That Leno is soooo good!
Saturday Burn day. Chilled most of the day. Made a Burning Man out of el-wire which I wore like a very large medallion. The Man burn was amazing! After an amazing performance by the fire conclave, which is a couple hundred fire performers spinning fire under the man. Then there was 30 minute of fireworks before a large diesel bomb was dropped on the man. Huge Flame! The man is now on fire. About this time the wind and dust pick up. I am less than 200 feet from the man and I can barely see him. It is what one calls a white out, or almost a white out. Words can not describe this scene. Very surreal. a 100' structure on fire. 50-60 mph winds, dust so thick one must wear eye goggles and a mask. All you can see is the people around you and a large structure on fire, which lights up the night into an eerie orange glow! Such an amazing Man burn! Now we party!
Sunday Break down camp day. kind of sad. Tonight we burn the temple. I got lost, by my own choice, from our group. I found myself sitting down wind from the temple. It you have ever seen something large burn in the wind, you will see fire tornadoes down wind from the structure. I knew this and warned others around me that we were in a direct path of that. sure enough, the Temple is burning and then then dust devils/fire tornado start moving away from the temple and directly at us. Being in the path of a 25 foot wide dust devil is cool! Being in the path of a 25' dust devil caused my wind and a large fire, AMAZING! Wind, Dust and Fire coming right at us! people started to scramble. I yelled, "stay put, do not panic, you are running my show!" It was a great burn! Did I mention the 50' death star, with a green laser shooting into the night sky? Yeah is was a top an art car. It moved around the Playa. It was very cool. I could go on about Burning Man, but how do I describe the sun to a blind man? You can't, you have to show them. And that is how Burning Man is, words can not describe, I must show you! Which I want to do. Remember, Burning Man sucks, do not go!
Do not go if you do not like being hot, cold, rainy, windy, dusty and lack of sleep, Okay with that said, What a great quacking week!
Great review! A buddy of mine just returned and related some of the same things you did. He was very moved by the beautiful and towering "Bliss." I missed seeing my Cali and Oregon tribe out there this year, but chose to forgo the long trip this time around.
