Unless you are a burner and will not admit to it, which is very deceiving, or you have read something some where, you got no right calling someone a yahoo. I will give you a thank you. You helped me. I need to sign up for some shifts this year, I should have last year and I need to give back, volunteer to work some shifts. Greeters. and I am doing it because it makes me feel good. Yes, even gestures of kindness are done with "alternative motives", I give, because it makes me feel good! I learned that at Christmas. Giving = Goodness. Along with that I do other things that give me pleasure. We all do. Even you. There is nothing wrong living your life for your self. You can act like you do not live your life for yourself but, I think you do. I believe we all bought the ticket, which makes it our ride, right? So why should we not be living for ourselves. If the "I", the "me",mind set has tainted burning man and it has been defunct for years? Well why are you on this board? in this thread?
I need to make time for this trip either this year or next. logistically when is the lastest one can get set to go? (i mean find a group/get tickets etc, etc.) also if i was to go by myself is it practical to backpack to a new location every night to meet more people?

Logistical speaking, one should start to plan for Burning Man the year before the event. With that said, could you prepare for Burning Man 2 months before the event, sure, I did it my first year and I was very unprepared for what lied ahead. I had the survival part down, but I had not idea what I was getting into. ;D But after my 3rd burn, how can or how do you prepare for that? Tickets will be on sale until the event starts or until it sells out. Early word is that they are selling a lot of tickets early, more than ever before. Most theme camps already have their groups set. You would have to find one of them, before the event, and build relations with that camp. Regionals are good for this. With that being said, there are still groups you could join with, but you would have to do some research to find them, check out Eplaya(<-------click it). If really interested PM me and I will tell you about Stag camp, we are still taking on newbies. If you are going, plan to go from Monday to Monday. Do not go for just the weekend. A community is built and to be part of that, you need to be there to help build that community form the day it starts and not just show up mid- or late-week and enjoy the fruits others have provided. you do not want to miss that Tuesday sand storm! Seriously, you do not want to miss it! Hope this helps.

Scrog, A few months after my second Burn I quit discussing it with people who had not been. I'd come back all manic and excited and talking about a fight in Thunderdome, or a cock that shoots fire, or when we caught the bar on fire or something like that and all I'd get in response was "What do you bring to barter?" After a while I just decided that if someone was going to go they needed to get there without my persuasion. I still answer specific questions that people have but I just get annoyed with the "tell me everything" crowd. I do enjoy pumping the people who have never been before who know more about it than me full of disinformation.
This will be year 5 for me. Do a shift at the airport. One of my highlights from last year was burning one a mile above BRC.
^Great information. Maybe I should let people find out on their own or let the Man find them, like what happened to me, but if anybody is on the fence, I want to be there to direct them in the right direction, like not showing up mid week kind-of-stuff. 2008 was my first year, and that green dick shooting Flames is what got me. Where do you camp?

Burning Man bound baby!! Well not leaving yet, but now have a group and a ride. This should be exciting. I am not the most creative of people, so I may need some suggestions on what types of things are most appreciated through bartering (other than corn).

I would love to head out to Burning Man one year, but the overall cost seems a little high for me (driving from Chicago to the desert). I noticed some people list some "regional" burns on here. Is there a website that lists all of these, and has anyone ever been to them? I think after I did a smaller burn, I would be able to justify the money to do the big one.
EAP, I saw that! I will be looking for misty vagina and Rosario's would be extra cool to play in, maybe we can plank together.
NBF, When you coming? nice find with the list, but there are also other local Burns that are not officially sponsored by the Org. They follow the same principles and are put on by burners, but are just not sponsored or on the 'official' list. Here in Florida we have After Burn in the fall and Pre-Heat in the spring. Frank, that is a good idea. I kind of wished I would have done that before hand. My first year, I had not idea what I was getting into. I read a lot and researched, but I really had no clue. A smaller burn would help with that. Scorched Nuts is in Ohio and I have some Stag family that goes and they love it. Let me know if I can help set you up. and like I said there are other local burns that are not on the 'official' list.
Hmmm . . . I think I like air conditioning and not having sand in my sinus cavities a little too much. We are actually really close to it now, and I can certainly see the appeal, but I just don't think it's in my constitution. Josh definitely wants to go, but I don't think I would be up for it.
^NBF how close? If it matters it is more of a dust than sand. It is not gritty, more like a powder. I hear you on the air conditioning, here in Florida the humidity is a beast and I look forward to the dry weather. There are structures you can build for relatively cheap that are very cool. I bring a hexayurt and it allows me to sleep until noon.
150 miles is pretty close! a lot better than 1500 miles or 2700 miles for me. ;D Ugh, that is a long drive! If Josh wants, we can get him(and you ) set up in a camp around a lot of good cool people. We are not a theme camp, we do not have 'dues' or anything like that. We are a camp for people going 'Stag'. Hence the name, Stag Camp. Our infrastructure, group shade, showers, stoves, music, lights, and such is all donated by Stag members. You can be involved as little or as much as you want. We provided a camp that allows familiar faces a place to group together. Our main thing is, "We are not your Momma and No Drama!". As a group, we do a meet-n-greet on Tuesday and a Greeters shift on Wednesday and that is 100% voluntary.
Just saw the line-up for Opulent Temple, which is the large dance club at BRC. I am sure some of these names are bigger than I know, but Wednesday is looking good!

Josh said that if he had the money for a ticket, he'd probably take you up on the offer to join in your camp.
Online newspaper the Shroom -- an unfunny Onion for hippies -- tried to riff on the Burning Man news today (slash make some kind of commentary on the sold-outness of it all?) via what appears to be a satire piece on this being Burning Man's final year. Grace says that is not the case.

The Shroom... rhymes with lampoon
I'm skipping this year's Burning Man (been twice) although Alchemy--The Georgia Burn is on the list (already have my ticket). Alchemy is a great way to experience this neo-tribal vibe for those living in the Southeastern US.
Held Sept 29th--Oct 3rd at Cherokee farms festival grounds near Lafayette, GA.
