Despite the fact that Burning Man sucks, it's hot, expensive, it's gotten too commercial, and that they provide nothing but toilets I'll be attending for the fifth year. Scrog, drop by and introduce yourself. I'll be at the Hookah Lounge at 4:30 and Anniversary. Low key shade chilling in the day, middle eastern belly dancing until midnight.
Yeah, those string balloons are cool. Look forward to them every year. 2008 I was laying down, looking into the nights sky, when I heard a cow bell or something to that effect. I saw washer and weights at the end of a rope, floating, and the rope was reaching into the night's sky. What in the hell? A rope floating by me at 3am and only washing and some weights were holding down, kept it from floating away. It lightly bounced across the desert floor. Turns out, It was the end of the balloon string. The weights and such, "Cow Bell" is what kept that end of the balloon string from floating away, the artist was at the other end. I look up and at night he lights up the LEDs(each balloon has a LED at the bottom of it) and it is a string of multiple bright white-blue-ish specks of light floating across the dark night's sky. Very nice to experience when lost in deep space and the experience is triggered by a cow bell.
Not my pic.
I wish Bonnaroo would adapt and embrace some of the Art from Burning Man, like Coachella has. It is probably less travel and less expenses for the artist to display their work at Coachella, like the Flaming Lotus girls from San Fran, but I am sure East coast has some sweet artist. Fire Conclave? Workers of Metal?
The Art of Such and Such was the closest thing we had to that Scrog...and you saw where that ended up...but hey, we got a water slide now (eyes rolling)

I hear ya Pondo. not much art at the Music and Arts festival. I will take lots of pics this year at the burn and maybe we can change some things, bring some art back to the farm. I have a design, that brings art and shade together, but not sure how to present it. It involves more than I could do alone.

Great weather this year. Not too hot during the day and not too cold at night. There wasn't a single proper whiteout, which is unfortunate in my opinion as I love a good whiteout. The playa surface was good and hard. It felt about the same size as last year.
Faves include the Flaming Lotus Girls' fireworks, skeleton wheel thingie, this wagon that had hilarious western portraits, Dust City Diner.
Law enforcement seemed really laid back this year. There seem to be more Europeans than previous years. Toilets were incredibly maintained.
Funny how when you're out there the only things you want to eat is meat and salt.
Next, What an amazing burn! The weather was almost too good. We needed a whiteout or two, because the virgins were spoiled with the amazing weather. I am not going into much detail. Highlights for me were:
El Pulpo Mechanico-This was an amazing piece of art! Funny thing the car broke down late in the week, but the fire breathing Octupus still worked.
Inventing a new dance at Opulent Temple on Tuesday.
The Marching Band March off in Center Camp was amazing! This video gives no justice to the talent and craziness experienced this night at this show! It was amazing! Fire Concave all-stars marching band
Random gifts were: Misting people with cooler water on Saturday on the Esplanade Impromptu Grilled cheese on sunset on Friday night(or was that Saturday). Coffee, over 200 cups, on Sunday (we had planned this to be down Tuesday and Thursday mornings)
The bombs on Man burn blew me away! The heat from Temple burn was intense!
Good times!!!
Frank, Check out Burningman and Eplaya (<---click it) start getting ready now! Plan to go all week. Monday through Sunday! Do not go if you can only make it for a few days. PM your questions and I will be happy to answer.
Sorry I missed you Joe B, that was an amazing week!
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Sorry I missed you Joe B, that was an amazing week!
No worries, too many places to be. A lot of my camp were involved in Florida regionals so you might have made some good connections though. Sure you made some good ones of your own though.
I bet you see some stuff volunteering at medical. I volunteered at Arctica this year which was a lot of fun and the airport which was kind of lame (although a lot of fun last year).
Wish I didn't get so drunk on Burn night, I sort of rendered myself useless. Not a fan of Infected Mushrooms newer stuff. I've been listening to them for 12 years and I just think they have run their course with me.
I've got my bikes stored in a friend's yard in Reno with a tarp over them. Maybe for the first time in 5 years my bike situation with work out for a year...... maybe.
Hope you avoided the exodus on Monday. We decided to leave right before Temple burn and had zero wait.

Somehow this whole thing gets more expensive for me every year. You would think less, but nope. In 2006 I did it all for under $500. This year I came in at a little below $2K. And my first year was still my favorite! WTF! That's why you don't want to go, kids. You don't want to end up like me one day.
Infected Mushroom gets a big FU from me. Heard they had their security team take over the front of the stage and made a wall by being aggressive and billies. They did so their people could have a VIP spot directly in front of the stage. About Exodus, I stayed and watched Temple burn. The line out was forever. When you volunteer a medical shift, you get a special bracelet that allows you to use Point 7 Gate. This is the gate that Staff uses. In others words I skipped the line and got to drive right out, NO Wait! SCORE!!!! I saw some crazy stuff, but not too much. Met some good people. Gonna do more Medical shifts next year. Bikes are key out there. This was a good year for bikes. The ground was great for it. At the airport did you get a chance to fly? Their was a girl and a guy in our camp who went over to the airport, early in the Morning and got to go up in the plane with the jumpers. She went up twice and he got to land on another Playa, (a secret Playa?) They say if there are spots they will take you up.

I flew last year, not this year. The people taking jumpers up were camped with Burning Sky at 5:30 and J. They were gifting flight tokens. Other good techniques are volunteering at the airport, showing your tits to a pilot, or swapping a meal for a flight.
I think these piece needs another look, although it was embedded in the other post here it is, I love this thing!
The Trojan Horse, This 20 ton beast looked over the city for the week, on Friday hundreds of slaves pulled it out to its final destination, that night it was lit up! Check out this good video of this amazing work of art. At 3:37 it gets good!
This is a decent video of a Saturday night on the Playa, 3:50 is one of my favorite, yes that is a Thunderdome!
This is an alright video of the Man burn, The explosions, the green bomb @3:03 and the triple bombs @ 3:53 are given no justice in this video. I was closer and you can feel those explosions.
Good video of the Temple burn and yes it really is this quiet, people cheering were quickly quieted. This is a very scared moment. A lot of emotions are released at this time.
over on Facebook, this came across my desk. This video gives a glimpse into the conditions on the Playa, it just happens to be a day-by-day time lapse HD video, from before the city, until Exodus. It gets very windy and dusty on the Playa! Burning Man sucks do not go! but if wind and dust are your thing then check this video out! Night time is the right time.
Burning Man sucks do not go! I hear there is some new registration process, due with in 2 weeks!? WTF!!! Then you might not even get a ticket. Then if you are chosen in the lottery, you pay to hang out in the dust? I even hear they are having trouble getting a quality headliner this year and MTV is sponsoring an arena sized misting tent, with wi-fi.
I fear me and my merry band of misfits may be joining you this year, Scrog.
We've gotten sucked into the Portland Burner scene pretty hard; they seem like a great crew and we are even going to a Halfway Home party, thrown by a few of the camps, in March.
I just wish it would hurry up and get warm here, the outfits for these parties are not really appropriate for 40 degrees and rain.
