Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
the completely different styles of music make for a difficult comparison.
both bands are excellent at what they do
You are about to be stranded on a deserted island for the rest of your life.
You have just enough time before the shipwreck to load either the entire catalogue of Daft Punk, or that of MMJ onto your brand new solar powered i-pod.
It's kinda an insult to Daft Punk to group them in with MMJ and Arcade Fire.
Fixed that for ya.
Fixed that for both of ya
In all seriousness though, this is like comparing apples and oranges. Actually, no, scratch that - this is like comparing apples and some other type of food that's nothing like apples at all. I'm a huge fan of both Daft Punk and My Morning Jacket. Both are incredible acts that are at the top of their game in what they do - they just happen to do quite different things. MMJ has a more diverse style and better lyrics, whereas Daft Punk has better beats and can keep me dancing 'til the break of dawn. As far as recorded output, I have to give it to Daft Punk, but that's not a very fair comparison, as MMJ is a band that really needs to be seen live to be fully appreciated, IMO. I haven't seen Daft Punk in concert yet so I can't comment on their skills as live performers, but I've heard great things. However, being DJ's, they're more limited in their ability to improvise on stage, so what you hear at a show is going to be very similar to what you hear on the album; Jacket, on the other hand, like to jam. Daft Punk certainly puts on more of a spectacle than My Morning Jacket, for sure, with their robot costumes and the now-retired light pyramid - but for me, that doesn't necessarily make the show, it just adds a fun visual element.
Now, I know this isn't what Bishop was asking, but I'd be ecstatic to see either one near the top of next year's lineup. I'd be happy about Daft Punk, because I've always wanted to see them, and there are tons of 'Roo fans who have been calling for them for years (especially since they've already played the other two biggest American fests, Lollapalooza and Coachella). And I'd love to see MMJ, because if they're even half as good as they were in '08, we'd still be in for a phenomenal show.

Have you heard the album "Alive 2007" and/or the excellent Coachella bootleg from, i think, 2008?
If by sounding like the album, you mean, taking snippets of their songs and mashing them all up into a continuous body rocking jam, then you are correct.
MMJ is absolutely a live band, but really, they dont jam. they might extend a few riffs or incorporate a few new elements into a song, buy they arent going to take you off on some heady 20 minute jam session ala the dead / phish / moe / sci...
It's a really hard debate, since DP is left with the music you know from the albums and they cut it up, change the speed, frequency, pitch, whatever - and the resulting live sound is resoundingly different. DP has a customized mixing board that allows them to do all of this in real time...
Guitar rock takes a similar approach, but because it's "live" - meaning, a person and a guitar, it's usually perceived as either being more difficult or challenging.
This is getting a little Bill Clinton, but I guess one has to define the word "live" to really compare the two.
btw, lhr - i would take the ipod with mmj. but i voted for DP
I voted for Daft Punk. My reasoning: 1) I've seen MMJ live already and I love them. 2) Daft Punk tickets cost a shitload. 3) Daft Punk LN What would be the best dance party ever. 4) I also love Daft Punk, but for completely different reasons.
OK, this is like asking which drink do you prefer, 2% Milk or Grain Alcohol? They are just to contrasting to compair to one another, and determine who is better. That said, ima go with Daft Punk, because i consider them to be very close to the top, if not the top artist in their genre, whereas I can't say the same about MMJ, though they are good.

One or the other... or nothing.
Hurry up! That giant wave is coming fast
I believe I would hang myself fairly quickly, so this doesn't apply
Easy as Pie -- MMJ any day and twice on Sunday. Saw them in Nashville and in Louisville in 2010 and wished they would play Indy or Cincy so I could see them again. They just keep getting better and better. Can't wait for the new album!
I've seen MMJ 3 times and loved it each time. I am pretty sure I will get to see them tour many more times. I can't really say the same for Daft Punk, so they got my vote. My real vote would be for both though, here's hoping.
