So I just came up with a new idea. I'm pretty excited to do it and I wanted to get some input. I was thinking about getting a few disposable cameras and writing a note on each of them that says something like this "if you find this camera, take some pics and pass it along. If you are the one to use the last of the film, drop it off at lost and found." Then at the end of the weekend I'll go and see if anyone droped any of them off, take them home, get them developed and post the pics on here or where ever else. I just think it would be really cool to see all the different pictures...it'll kind of be like these people let us into their world for a couple minutes, ya know. I lost my camera this year, and when i picked it up from lost and found, there were pics on there of the people who found it....which is how I came up with this idea. Do you think people would actually do it? Has it already been done?

That's an awesome idea! You could actually do it out in the real world too, just leave them in random places with your address attached. Of course, putting your address out there could be a little risky, unless you or someone you know has a PO box.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

I had a similar situation where I found a camera at bonnaroo and had it developed and posted the pictures here. never found the owners, it's somewhere buried on this site in its own thread. I think it was in 2008.
I also lost my camera (pocket camera Canon A710) during nine Inch Nails and never got it back. That camera could take distorted color pictures after i dropped it and I have a collection of crazy images I took with. Hate that I lost that camera.
Fun idea though, 20 rolls of random pictures from bonnaroo would be interesting as is finding one roll.
Maybe we could get a couple people to do it and put it together for some kind of photo blog, and put the URL of the site on the camera. I think people will be more inclined to participate if they know they can find the photos later.

GREAT IDEA!
We experienced something similar this past year. There was a group camped in Tent City right across from us in TO that brought a couple disposables over and asked us to take pictures. There was a place to write your email address on a label on the camera and they said if we returned them they would email us when the pics were up. As far as I know there no one in our group ever received an email about them.
wow this is awesome that more people want to do this. We should definitely think of some more details for how we can all participate when it gets closer to the event. Thats a really good idea to make a site just for these cameras and put the url on them so people know what will happen with their pics. Also to email the people when the pics are posted. Yay i'm excited to see how far this goes!

This is an incredible idea. Perhaps it would be easiest to include multiple options on the camera saying you can mail it to x, drop it off at lost and found, or get them developed and post them to x. I really want to copycat your idea, this is too good. I hope you get a lot of out of context gems to get an idea of, or guess at, what crazy fun someone else had during Roo.
I have no clue how to set up a website. But it would be awesome if we could some how make a website that made it possible for people to upload their pics onto it....maybe people could make some comments or something......maybe everyone could make and/or personalize thier own folder or something on this website.....just brainstorming here.

Ooh, ooh, I'll make a website!
I love the idea, I always love this sort of project. I'd love to help out by creating the website for it. I might have to just make it a blog on blogspot or something, though, because at least at this point I can't afford to register a domain name for this project.
If anybody has ideas of names for this project, toss 'em out there - if we come up with a name I'll make a logo of sorts using it and then I'll make a sticker image that anyone can print and stick on disposable cameras with the logo and all the necessary information, so anyone who wants to participate can buy a camera and then easily turn it into a piece of the project.

Domain names aren't TOO expensive. A .com domain is $12 a year through Go Daddy, other extensions (like .net or .us or whatever) have various cheaper prices. And if we decided to register a domain name we can always comparison shop and figure out if any other company would be cheaper.
I have hosting for another website so I should be able to use a bit of that space for this project, so that's not an issue. So the domain name would be the only cost associated with it...once we get a better idea of what we need, if anybody did want to contribute towards a domain name it really wouldn't be very expensive...if a few people chipped in it would really only be a few bucks a person. Of course, it would need to be renewed in a year if we wanted it to stay there, haha.
I'm so excited about this. It seems like we should be able to work it out so that anybody who wanted to buy a camera could easily turn it into a part of this project. And if a bunch of us are aware of this, that might improve our chances of recovering a lot of cameras. We can all try to keep an eye out for cameras and if we find one that's full we can grab it - or I'd say even if you find one that's almost full, grab it and take the last couple pics yourself just to be sure we get the camera. And then on Sunday we can grab any we find regardless of how full they are, pretty much.
* Anybody can access it to look at pictures. * It's easy to share pictures that you are in if you get captured * It's easy to comment on and carry on targeted conversations * It's free * There are no space limitations * It's a very common tool that more than 23 million people use * The burden of uploading and maintaining falls on no particular person

Yeah, Facebook is probably the way to go. I think I would suggest starting a new Facebook page for the project though, at least if we have enough cameras to really turn this into something.
The only real problem is getting the cameras back to the people who placed them (or to someone else who's willing to develop the photos and upload them). I can't really come up with any good way to do it other than the lost and found idea, and I'm a LITTLE hesitant about taking advantage of the lost and found for this, especially depending on how many cameras we end up with. Chances are they wouldn't mind, but I must admit I would feel a bit guilty about it since all the cameras would have instructions on them that made it clear we were taking advantage of the lost and found, sort of.
But I don't think there's much chance any random person is going to want to contribute the money/effort/time to get the pics developed and post them, and the only other possibility I can think of is to put a mailing address on the camera, but then someone has to either give out their address or pay for a PO box, plus the person who ended up with it would have to pay postage and we can't really count on that either.
Don't they have disposable digital cameras? Those shouldn't have any additional costs attached, right?
As far as a location, I bet our new friends at Sanuk might be down to have their booth as a dropoff spot. It would increase traffic through their location.
Maybe everyone could think of their own little simble or sticker to put on each of thier cameras. That way everyone can find thier cameras and no one has to leave with more cameras than they brought. And plus that way, you only have to bring the amount of cameras your willing to spend the money on to get developed.
