my impression: Mother Nature can be a B*tch the Flaming Lips brought it to Roo - the Police didn't Richard Thompson is a guitar god what happened to Shakedown? frozen lemonade is worth $5 - cookie icecream sandwiches are not String Cheese should stay together spray sunscreen eats the letters off the bracelets Ziggy and Ben rock Tool created the best lightshow fireworks ever Superjam should be in This Tent
and to our Irish friends - hope the flag got noticed at the Police
I think I gave the wrong impression with my long-winded complaints. All in all they were very very small parts of my weekend. I just found them interesting is all. I'm always fascinated by social group standards, I can't help it.
Glad to see there was another misfit there, even if you were in hiding! Knowing what I do now, if I manage to get back in '08 that might be my plan. Maybe social prejudices just really run that deep for some people.
Regardless, I still met a ton of really cool people, and I'm saving for '08 as we speak!
Fantastic time, despite the dust. This was my first, and I was actually impressed with how organized everything was. Had no issues with security, in fact every time I went through, it seemed one or the other guard was telling somebody to "get creative.." Seriously, if you were putting on a huge event like B'roo with all of the national attention, wouldn't you want the fans to be just a little discreet??? Anyway, I loved it. Feist was amazing and I was impressed by the Decemberists (which I wasn't before). Gogol won me over, and the Police... well it was good to see them on stage even though they seemed sluggish. White Stripes were a disappointment, as were Sasha and Digweed. Sorry, but that's not house music. It's not even good techno. Superfly and AC ought to have looked into bringing Silicone Soul out. They had a new album out this spring and spin wicked genre spanning sets. Sasha and Diggs were technically proficient, but just seemed to be content piling trippy effect upon trippy effect without any real heart and soul. Well... that's how I see it anyway. Brazilian Girls and Gillian Welch were really good too. And I loved Spoon, even though they sounded like their records.

I mainly wore my Grateful Dead tie dyes, but I did have my NIN tour shirt from last year packed with me as well, it just didn't get worn. Sorry to hear about the few as.sholes there. My experiences with the crowd was overwhelmingly positive, sharing smokes, having good conversations, etc. I spent a bunch of time wandering by myself, but I was never alone. I never felt like that in 2006.
We had a few "young hippie" friends of mine (I guess I could be called one as well) camped along with our group and I assure you, all the hippie looking folks there were not bad, just a select few. Sorry you encountered them.
I am happy to hear you had a great weekend overall and are planning on returning, you sound like the type of person that made my weekend great too, I love meeting cool people at festivals. Karma for you.

I have been to the 'roo ever year except the 1st. I had a great time this year and my neighbors were flat out some of the coolest people I ever met. I enjoyed the music although I did feel a shift in the crowd. It was different than years past. A lot more "tweekers" that's for sure. Shakedown was more low key but if u looked hard enough it was all good!!. I did feel that a lot of people were just wiped out from all the heat. If you don't take the heat seriously then u will be hurting real bad. U had to be real smart this year. Securtiy getting into centeroo was slow however u can't blame it all on security. I always went through with a few water bottles a goodie bag and I flew right in no hassle. I saw lot's and lot's of people with everything under the sun (blankets, umbrellas, chairs, food, drinks, and more. If people didn't pack so much to bring into centerroo the lines would be faster.
The music at the what stage had a few issues but def no show stoppers. I think the true 'roo vets knew what to expect and planned accordingly. The new crew who didn't know how harsh it can be had lots of troubles just staying awake and consious for the weekend.
I do think staff needs to be more informed they did seem unorganized but overall this was a great time and the staff did a good job and our crew had a blast. The main thing to remember is this is a music fest and the music and friends should be #1 and everything else is just a bonus....see yall next year
OK, so this was my 6th roo. The 2nd vip year in a row. We had an absolute blast, almost never a down moment and saw close to 33 bands in one form or another over the 4 days. Ironically my favorite performance may have been this crazy dude on 'shakedown' (if you could call it that) Friday singing about living in a cave and going nuts on this weird toy guitar. Crazy stuff.
ng.
That guy was amazing! He had rainbow hair, and was doing his little show right across from my tent. It was great!
Overall, I had a fantastic time. The weather was horrible, but of course no one can help that. It caused me to miss out on several afternoon sets, because I was stuck laying at camp with near heatstroke. Its okay though, we raged for the latenights.
STS9 was INCREDIBLE. Absolutely amazing.
Roo was good. I had some new experiences, some good, some bad, and some spiritual. I made some fantastic new friends, who I won't give up for the world. I tried some new things, saw some great shows, and ate a TON of delicious falafel.
It was a great weekend. I'll be back.
ps- I actually enjoyed the bus ride. Make friends with people on your bus! It helps!

i'll agree about the young hippies - i felt like an outcast most of the time, except when I purchased and wore my tie-dye Bonnaroo 2007 shirt (#30!), then people stopped treating me like a varmit. What the hell? So sad.

Yep that's the guy alright. My wife spotted him on Sunday sitting in the crowd waiting for John Butler Trio to start.
I may have you all beat in regards to seeing crazy/shady stuff... We were chilling in our tent on Sunday evening and this black guy with dreads walked by. His gf (I assume) was carrying a trash bag full of t-shirt. We asked to check them out, they wer basic tie dye roo shirts and said they were $20 or 2 for 30. We did not like the shirts and so just said that we did not have the money. Then the funny/shady part...
He calls his "girl" back over (she was pretty attractive early 20's black girl) and said I know you got enough for a hand job. We just kind of let out an uncomfortable/humoring laugh. He reitterated and also said something about a bj. He had her come over and kind of model for us and everything. She seemed rather forced but ok with it.
...in case you were wondering, we turned down the offer and they walked on .
I had a completely different experience then most of you.
3rd roo for us.
When we pulled in they asked us -you been here before? Yep. Ok pull thru. No search what so ever. They didn't search any cars around us. I mean didn't even look inside the windows.
The whole weekend I thought geez they sure did get lax on security and searches. I mean, I think they looked in our bags at the centeroo gates maybe twice.
We found the other enterance to centeroo(by the other tent) after waiting for about 20 minutes on Friday under the arch. Used that the rest of the weekend and never waited again.
We camped in Clark Grizzwald so we had a bit of a walk but lots of vendors along the way.
Saw ALOT of glass. Maybe not as much as the last couple of years but still lots and lots.
I can't complain about people because everyone we encountered was cool. We had great neighbors. I am used to people at shows walking by or standing in front of you, I just figure its going to happen with that many people there. I am there for the tunes and won't let anything ruin my experience.
Overall, I had a wonderful weekend, I can't complain about much. The heat did get to me on Friday so I missed everything after Cold War Kids until Tool. Thought I wouldn't make Tool but I dragged myself out of the tent and made it.
The heat and dust were the only bothersome things but I expected that too so again can't/shouldn't complain.
So sorry to hear so many of you had such bad experiences. I guess we were the lucky ones this weekend.

I was at 2005 (the 2nd mud year I think) so this was my second Bonnaroo.
I have never had more fun anywhere in my entire life. I will go every year until I die.
Yes it was hot and dusty, yes I was camped in the Austin Powers camps over a mile from the Centeroo, but...
The shows were so awesome. The Lips blew my mind in a huge way, Sasha and Digweed were just amazing...every show I saw was loads of fun.
My neighbors from Wisconsin made the whole weekend worthwhile. They were three of the coolest kids I have met in a long time and we had lots of fun with those guys. Hi Brady, Jessica, and Lucy!
I found the crowd to be pretty good natured actually, of course there is about a 3% jacka$$ factor in any social situation, but overall, everyone I talked to with few exceptions was friendly and cool.
I don't really understand the posts about not seeing any glass for sale...I lost count of how many vendors were selling that stuff.
Also, I didn't find security to be that bad except for Friday, where it was a horrible wait to get into Centeroo. Other than that, no more than 5 min. lines and no hassles at all. I found it to be just like an airport...empty your pockets into your carry-on, breeze right on through.
For me, Saturday night in 2005 and in 2007 were the best parties I have ever been too. Last Saturday I would think you could go anywhere in the world and you would have not found a more wild, fun, crazy time anywhere in the world than in Manchester, TN. Saturday night was epic, I fell in love with the world and just had a super time.
this was my first roo and i had a blast. all my neighbors were absolutely cool and the guys next to us from Auburn were crazy but very nice guys and gals.
amazingly enough we only had to wait in line on the I-24 for about 20 min. when we got in we waited for an hour and a half or so but got parked in family camping and only had about a 5 min walk to centeroo.
security was a breeze. never got searched too hard and always had a few nugz and pipe on me. saw a crazy fight with security at one of the entrances to centeroo. saw a few rude staff members but saw way more totally chill and cool ones. the Pesto Mozadilla was the bomb!!!
as for the shows i felst like i got way more than my moneys worth. one of the first shows i saw was the cold war kids. they killed it. i love that group now. absolutely one of the top shows even with the tech problems.... the Roots show was a high point of my weekend. i couldn't believe the size of the crowd and how much energy there was. i was so happy after seeing that...... obviously the Lips is the greatest show you can get. nothing compared to that light show and all the props they always bring. being from Oklahoma i love these guys. gotta support the hometown groups. also Kings of Leon kicks a$$....... even though the police bounced early i loved hearing those classics and seein the old man belt out RRROOOOOXXANNE!! ..... i hated that Spoon was on at the same time as Ween, Ben Harper, and Franz Ferdinand. i chose Spoon and was not dissapointed. they put on a hell of a show. i stayed at That Tent from mid-way through the Annuals show, through The Hold Steady (they rocked it hard. one of the best energy groups there. everyone has to see a show sometime. my 2nd.), and into Spoon.... i had another hard decision between Wilco and Feist. went to the first of Wilco and then caught all of Feist. Feist made me fall in love with her. GREAT SHOW!! she really does it well. highlight of my Sunday..... only bad thing about the shows was that i missed Dr. Dog and a few other because i didn't have a schedule and missed them. but other than that it was absolutely the best time i've ever had. almost forgot about the Super Jam. who couldn't love that?
i didn't have a problem gettin any headies while there. just walked for a while and found what i wanted.... everyone was asking me to hook them up. i guess noone could find it.
my buddy, who's been 2 times before this, was tellin me that we needed to prepare to walk about 30-45 mins from camping to the shows and that it would be hard to find any good nugz. guess i was the luck charm. like i said we parked about a 5 min walk away from the shows.
i'm still so pumped and so happy that i went. this is definately something i'll do again next year. can't wait. thanks for all the tips about what to expect. it really helped with my experience.
i'm gonna be on this high for a very long time. thank you Bonnaroo!!

The other upside I forgot to mention was how chill everyone we ran into was about sharing their herbals with us. Great way to pass the time in line I must say.
What sucked was how polarized the crowd seemed between metal(usually meat)-heads and hippies(read close-minded). I came for String Cheese and Widespread just as much as Tool and the Stripes. Personally, think it's cool to see the lineups evolve in the way it is. If you look, the lineups between the beginning in '02 thru '05 are all virtually the same. I mean, if you want the "Phil and Trey Fest" every year call it what it is.
Yeah... the only negative people I ran into were disgruntled hippies pining away for the days of the non-stop jam fest. I couldn't let them get me down though... there seem to be plenty of other fests going on this summer put on by people far more narrow minded than Superfly and AC for them to go to.
^^^^^^^Dude, you totally win this thread. John Paul Jones playing at your RV. Awesome.
haha thanks man. i feel like the luckiest man alive. if you knew how much i worshipped zeppelin youd really understand haha. plus, im from huntsville too!
Hot and dusty (duh) Security seemed a little less friendly The conflict between the aggressive metalheads and angry hippies sucked There seemed to be more really hot girls this year Slightly different vibe, not a big deal though. Fountains of Wayne? I watched them while I was waiting for Ween, and though I didn't like them, I saw the appeal...and they were completely out of place. Still, a great Roo...so many awesome shows and cool people.
I loved Roo. So many good things happened... I think most importantly I learned that people can look like one thing and be totally different and amazing... i was most pleased with the way everyone treated each other, very good vibes...
the only complaints i had was the dust (obviously) and that superjam sucked... sorry for whoever liked it, but i really didnt.... also i HATED the police... which ended up being a blessing because i left early and got a good spot for the lips...
the best experience over all would probably have been the lips for their amazing show and good sing a longs... 2nd would probably be a tie between TOOL and Mute Math since I had no experience with either and loved them both.... and 3rd place goes to the yard dogs road show... OMG that was freaking amazing
As your attorney I advise you to drive at top speed and it'll be a Goddamn miracle if we get there before you turn into some kind of wild animal. Are you ready for that? Checking into a Las Vegas hotel under a phony name with the intent to commit capital fraud with a head full of acid? I certainly hope so...
This was my first Bonnaroo and I had an awesome time! We came with two other couples and another girl and from the minute we bought our tickets we were up for a good time. We decided to name our little group of tents "Camp Bob Saget" and one of the guys made this amazing flag for us!
We arrived Thursday morning and got into camp around 12.00 noon. Our initial plan was to go tent only but after seeing how tiny that area was, we decided (with more than a little intrepidation) to go camp and park. What a GOOD call/stroke of fortune this was. I would have hated to lug all my shit down to tent only, we ended up in slightly BFE on Hidden Glen Drive, the camp was named after one of the Dazed and Confused dudes I forget who. Anyway. There was a slight mess up by the kid directing the vehicles, we had 5 cars and 4 of us got parked together, my hubbie in the truck was a couple cars down but no biggie. We had a lot of room and got our tents up fast in a square with our shade tent in the middle. Nice. We had awsome neighbours including MOE TRAIN!! and Brian and everyone else around us rocked.
Security - on the way in the car when I got my wristband I had two really cool kids checking me in. I didn't get searched or hassled at all. I found the kids (and they were kids too) working security at Centeroo to be asshats though. Talk about some of them having God complexes. Dude, you're checking f*cking bags not finding a cure for cancer, lose the attitude! I was with toolfreek who wore the most excellent Burger King costumer saturday night and one of them gave him shit for having it in his bag ffs.
The heat and dust were bad but I brought plenty of sunscreen and covered up the whole weekend. The dust didn't affect me at all other than give me black boogers (lol). I'm shocked to hear that some of you had umbrellas confiscated at Centeroo security, I would have been lost without mine. Even with my Tilley hat I needed more shade and that umbrella about saved me Saturday.
One thing I loved about Bonnaroo was the people. I totally get what people were talking about when they mentioned the Roo "vibe". Talk about friendly. You could just sense it in the air, everyone was cool, chilled, helpful, friendly. Lots of love and I wasn't taking anything other than alcohol either!
The bands were GREAT although I missed a couple of bands that I wanted to see due to the heat. Sunday we opted to come into Centeroo late. Saturday we came in early and were about dying, thankfully we found shade in the Blue Room Cafe round about 1pm and stayed there through Ziggy and Ben Harper. This was a stroke of luck though because I got to see/discovered Manchester Orchestra who were awesome.
Saturday was easily the best day. We went in early and decided to take cocktails with us to drink on the road to centeroo, before that we did some shots with the TRAIN! So everyone was well merry walking down, everyone around us was happy too and we were soon talking and laughing with complete strangers. Speaking of which, props to MUDBUTT and his buddy from Cali, you guys rocked! After getting into Centeroo we hit the microbrewery hard and by 5pm I had the best buzz going. I didn't overdoo it though and made it through the Police. The only letdown was missing the flips. My buddy dressed up as the BK King for the Sat sets and was a minor celebrity especially after he "confronted' the guy in the Arby's hat, man talk about funny. All through the Police set he had folks coming up to him asking for their picture taken.
Sunday we decided to go home early (had planned to leave monday instead) which looked like a nightmare to start but we were out of the site within 2 hours which was fine with me!
Highlights were definately the atmosphere, the bands, the people. This was my first time camping which I was dreading but we brought a lot of gear/supplies which I think helped. Gatorade and water about saved my life!
We only bumped into a couple of asshats and they were both at the White Stripes gig. I'm only 5foot 4 and one of the girls who went with me is barely 5 foot 1 and halfway through the gig this butthead who had to be over 6 foot comes jumping IN FRONT of us and didnt move. My friends husband had some quick words with him and he moved. Later some swampy looking stoned dude decided to come and "dance" next to us but he moved quick too.
God I've rambled! Sorry but I'm still stoked over such a great weekend! We'll be back next year and we're planning VIP/RV for a little bit of comfort and somewhere cool to sleep during the day, which we found difficult this year. Oh and a nice toilet too, that makes all the difference.
Some cool things/quotes from this year:-
"Dude, I just made a poocano in the portapotty" "I must be f*cked up, I've just seen the Burger King guy" "Dirty Mouth? Wash it out with Orbtiz!"

My first Roo was quite good and I'm left with great memories. Here's the highlights:
- We drove 3 hours from Atlanta on Thursday only to wait another 3 1/2 hours driving the LAST 5 MILES. The traffic was RIDICULOUS to say the least. I felt so bad for all the cars that ran out of gas, overheated or just plain died. Those poor people!
- Once we got in NOBODY was directing traffic, so we wandered aimlessly for a bit before we parked right off shakedown. Good move, as it wasn't too far to haul our gear to tent-only.
- We tried to camp with Inforoo, but it seemed packed (really wasn't) and we were discouraged from camping in the fire lane (which quickly filled up anyway). But we found some really great people, shared our shade tent and all became instant friends. My 'roo was enhanced by them... they rocked.
- I was highly impressed by the amount of patience I experienced, despite the long lines, the heat, the dust, etc. Everyone I met was cheerful, helpful and funny. I never even heard anyone get pissy.
- I found LOTS of glass. Heck, there was an ENTIRE GLASS ALLEY right down from the RV's. Rows and rows and rows of gorgeous glass glinting in the sun. Not to mention some kick ass chicken fajita wraps and $2 shots of Jack. I don't know what that area was called, but we visited often.
- I was fearful of the port-o-potties, but really, they weren't THAT bad. I did enter a few that we gut-wrenching gross, but that only happened once or twice (and I pee a lot!). I was impressed how much I saw them being pumped and cleaned.
- I love The Police but I was a bit disappointed with the show. They ended an hour early?! WTF? Plus, the crowd seemed WAY too young to appreciate it. Tool was a great show, too... but a bit too scary for me to go up close. Hell, I'm old: I'm over 30!
If the lineup is good next year, I'll definitely consider going again.
I can say now with certainty that no matter how long I live, no matter what I do, Bonnaroo 07 will be an experience (a collection of them really) always to be cherished.
The only problems I had the entire weekend were of my own making: lack of cash, and leaving the house in haste without making sure I had the SPF! So I've no one to blame but myself which at the end of the day is all I could ever ask for. Even the sunblock didn't prove to be a problem thanks to so many kind folks I met over the weekend.
I know I can count myself extremely fortunate this weekend. I believe I ended up in Claire Standish, yet arrived late. I actually feel this is quite unfair because I know folks that arrive early seem to have been routinely placed in the furthest reaches of the Bonnaroo galaxy. So, I hardly had to wait at all getting in (arrived at probably 10:30-11pm, and actually managed to catch the last few songs of Clutch's (one of the bands I had came to see) set. Oh yeah, my car was not even searched, in fact I was hardly acknowledged, security all weekend were extremely cooperative, even downright friendly.
And the people! Ahh, what a breath of fresh air! I guess maybe I come at things in somewhat of an unorthodox manner sometimes, but if I'm honest then it must be said the last several years I've lost a lot of faith in our generation for a host of reasons that I will not go into here.
Suffice it to say, this weekend was to leave me heaping coals of shame upon my own head for generally underestimating and disregarding our own generation and what it has to say and what it is about. I saw so many people, and of all kinds, that, had I seen them outside the realm of Bonnaroo, I might well have dismissed them in my own mind somehow.
Horrible, I know, so what I did is just shut up and listen all day Friday and what a wonderful experience it proved to be! I decided at Aesop Rock Friday night to make a concerted effort to be more outgoing the following day, and again came up trumps. Met fans of every kind, from all corners of the country, and thoroughly enjoyed every exchange.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but it has to be said that I feel somewhat uneasy as I may be exactly the sort of guy Bonnaroo wasn't intended for, at least according to some circles. Especially given how much I lucked out again and again this weekend. It's broadened my horizons both musically and socially, has given me something to look forward to and plan for next summer, and best of all given me a treasure trove of memories I'm proud to have. How great is that?

great post, glad you enjoyed, and thats what Bonnaroo is about man. I really believe it changes people on even the smallest level, and positivly
people talk about the vibe changing, i mean, i noticed it a little bit, but it wasnt a negative change, it was just a change. But i mean, i noticed a change last year with radiohead. . . . i think there are the people that come in for the headliners (like i did in 2005 for DMB), and return for Roo itself. 99% of the shows i saw this weekend were bands ive never seen live before, and 3 of my top 5 i have never listened to before.
For those meant for Roo, the headliner grabs you your first year, and Bonnaroo itself is what brings you back, for life. I dont care who is playing anymore, if its someone i enjoy, then ill be happy, but just to be there is enough for me.
Thanks laura. I guess I'm actually not referring to any specific generation, actually. It's hard to explain and I don't want to veer away from the thread. Suffice it to say that in my eyes different so-called generations are looking more and more alike to me (in many positive ways and some not so much) so essentially I'm referring to everyone. Good examples here would be the wonderfully diverse lineup this year helping bring together an equally diverse set of fans (very good, IMO), and the at times strikingly uniform similarity of the current crop of presidential candidates (very dangerous, IMO), respectively.
Thanks for the kind regards, also I forgot to mention that while I came by myself I was truly never alone (but to be fair never really expected to be). Just hope I can get one particular sweetpea (a roo vet in her own right) to come with me next year!
So everyone was well merry walking down, everyone around us was happy too and we were soon talking and laughing with complete strangers. Speaking of which, props to MUDBUTT and his buddy from Cali, you guys rocked!
hilarious! my friends-- mudbutt (james) and nathan. those walks to centeroo were a definite highlight
