Ok, so this was only my second Roo (last year my first) but I have a few general impressions.
First, the dust was unbearable. It seemed like they did not have watering trucks anywhere, and the dry weather only compounded the problem.
The late night shows this year seemed much better than last years, and the crowds seemed to be more into it.
NO GLASS ON SHAKEDOWN...if you wanted to buy a glass piece you had to go into a hidden area of a tent to procure it. Bonnaroo seemed to have really put the clamp down on it this year for some reason.
There seemed to be way more security than before. I saw several police officers and more people arrested this year. Again, Bonnaroo seemed to be clamping down on certain elements.
Security into Centeroo...was horrible this year. It took us 45 minutes to get in Thursday night, and we were about the 10th people in line. What made it even worse was the attitudes of the security staff working. They were calling the patrons "idiots and @$$holes". It was completely uncalled for.
Finally, the weather is out of everyones control, but it seemed much hotter this year than last.
Overall, I would say I was happy with this year, but will likely not go back next year. The five and a half hour wait in line to pull in (After ariving at 6 PM) and the seemingly new attitude of people in charge at Bonnaroo has turned me off to the experience. What do you guys think, did you observe similar things?

This was my first Bonnaroo but I enjoyed it immensely. I didn't have any problems with security or trouble getting into the camp grounds. I will be back.
I exalted you piercedjp, cuz I completely agree. The staff this year were complete power-trippin assholes imo. Examples:
Wednesday night every pulls in...the parking staff is directing traffic, telling people where to park etc...A couple cars try to park next to their friends, and the staff runs up to them waving his light sticks in the air and yelling and screaming wildly saying they need to get back to the END OF THE LINE or just to get off the property and stay off. I realize they're just directing traffic and it could mess them up a little if someone goes off on their own, but there was no need for the scene the staff member made.
At the smoker's lounge...The staff member asks the guy next to me what smokes he wants, he says 'i don't know i didn't know you had this many flavors' so the kind lady runs down the list and describes them all to him. Then a different staff member comes to me...'What cigarettes do you prefer' she asks...and I'm like well, I'd like to try somethin new, what all kinds do you have and she snaps back at me like a total bitch with 'I asked what kind do you prefer'...like screw what kind I prefer, I already have those. I went there to get something different. I thought that was the whole point of the smoker's lounge, that and too turn you on to American Spirits - but I ended up just leaving with some more menthols (my regular kind).
Also, the lack of communication between the mounted patrol and staff members and the real police was unreal. The police had no problems with us riding in the back of a pick up truck, nor did any mounted patrol, or the guys taking tickets at the gate - but every OTHER staff member we encountered told us we had to get out, and couldn't ride in the back. Some just told us to sit all the way down, some just waved us by, but at least half told us to get out (yes, we kept getting back in and so we got told many times we had to get out LOL)...I just think at least security wise, everyone should be on the same page. Though I didn't see ANY arrests like the OP, I'm sure there was.
And yes the amount of dust was outrageous - and lack of glass was just sad.
Sorry this was a long ranting post - I wasn't gonna post it until piercedjp started the thread

Had a fantastic time, I held up better than I did the last two years, experience has taken me a long way at the Roo. I knew the dust was going to be bad and the dust doesn't really bother me. Security was not very good, there seemed to be problems with getting people through in a timely matter, the lines were definitiely ridiculous. THe thing that bothered me the most was, they need more water stations. They took the one away from the What stage area and only had two in Centeroo. Two water stations for 80,000 people? Come on Bonnaroo, it's hot, people need water. Also noticed the prices on food went up a bit, but that''s to be expected. My biggest concern was about the water, just need to solve that. Overall I had a fantastic time, I love the Roo and hope to be back next year.

hi all , i just got back, decided to leave sunday rather than monday so i thought this roo was extremely fun, like you guys said before the dust was REALLY bad. I had no trouble getting into centeroo, to me, the security seemed less strict last year than last. the no glass thing was weird tho. i was kinda disappointed by the police, they were good but not enough energy... favorite shows were in no order in particlar: ben harper, Rod and Gab, tool, Sasha and Diggers, STS9, and DJ shadow.... kay more later time for me to pass out

This was my 2nd Roo and I took a different approach this year and explored a little more, and saw bands I had never heard of and had much better, more full experience than last year.
My only complaints: Security on Friday was pretty harsh. The dust - not that anyone could really do anything about it Again not enough shaded areas - especially at the What stage area. My fiance couldn't come with me so I spent most of the weekend alone.
Apart from those pretty minor complaints, everything was awesome although I still think maybe I am too old for this because I am exhausted today and I hurt all over
Post by famousblueraincoat on Jun 18, 2007 9:40:19 GMT -5
I also hurt all over. I feel your pain.
I had another wonderful Bonnaroo experience. However, I also have a few comments.
1. The dust was outrageous, I agree, but they did their best to control it. Can't really fix a drought. 2. The What stage sound was absolutely God awful. Almost every show I saw there had sound flaws, and, unlike last year, if you were in the deep lawn, you might as well have been listening to it from camp. Kings of Leon cut out for a whole song. Tool's levels were messed up for the first two songs. Just...not great. 3. I did feel that they were starting to crack down on security, but I didn't really feel it was unreasonable. There was a whole lot less nitrous this year which was a great thing. I didn't see it anywhere. 4. I wasn't in VIP but I heard that it just was not worth the money this year. Too big, too crowded, not enough of the promised amenities. That's dissappointing. 5. Who is running security for the comedy tent? That was the most poorly organized queue set up ever, and the first time at Roo I had ever seen fellow Rooers yelling at each other (the result of poor logistics).
OK, now good things:
1. Hour for hour, the most consistently excellent Bonnaroo yet. Did not see a bad or dissappointing show. I would've liked to see more surprise guests, but all in all, very consistently tremendous shows. 2. The SOmethin' Else Jazz Cafe is a gem. I saw Jacky Terasson trio on Saturday afternoon, and I have to tell you, this is a fantastic addition. Bring it back. 3. There was so much energy during the daytime sets this year. I just love to see that. 4. The late nights were mammoth. All of them.
While I did feel a bit old at times, I could never miss Bonnaroo. I will be back next year.

I thought that about The Police also - it just wasn't mixed well and it just wasn't that loud either, but I thought it was because I was further back in the field. The sound for Ben Harper and JBT at that stage were great though.
So this was our first time and I still am amazed. I did not encounter some of the issues you all did. We got in on Thursday and it took just about 2 hours. I got a little stressed when one of the staff people looked at us funny when we said we were day parking. We explained we knew we would have to stay the night but just did not want to get into the tent camping area. They were like...we will see what we can do. But then a very nice guy stopped traffice when it was our turn and told us where to go. The parking attendents was a little confused about where to put us and we actually ened up in RV parking until we left Friday night. I am sure our neighbors thought it was funny we were "camping" in our car.
We were into Centeroo early on Thurs/Fri/Sat and had the longest wait, about 10 mins only on Saturday. Never had any issues with security..but I did not have any reasons to have issues I guess. I did have some pills with me and they were in a presciption bottle, so they asked to see my ID. I got a chuckle out of the thought I might be selling my thyroid med. on the black marked. LOL LOLl
All the shows we saw were awesome. Ben Harper and Ziggy Marley were out of this world. We got there on Saturday around 12:30 because we wanted good seats for the Police and it was a bonus the other bands playing were good. I liked Ben Harper before we went...but not a real fan. Totally hooked now!!! The coolest thing was his drummer was watching the Police show right beside us..really nice guy.
I figured people would be split on the Police. Yes they did not play as long as they could have, and yes the people who paid to record the shows were not allowed..but come on..this is the Police..they rocked. I LOVED every minute of the concert and the dust/heat/sun for 6 hours was worth every minute.
I am still on my Bonnaroo high and not sure that my co-workers can really understand my gushing on and on about it. But I gushed anyways.... ;D

OK, so this was my 6th roo. The 2nd vip year in a row. We had an absolute blast, almost never a down moment and saw close to 33 bands in one form or another over the 4 days. Ironically my favorite performance may have been this crazy dude on 'shakedown' (if you could call it that) Friday singing about living in a cave and going nuts on this weird toy guitar. Crazy stuff.
My main complaints were pretty minor really. The crowd seems a little ruder than they have been in years past, just a little though. The lack of rain really hurt, but nobody can control that. I also though that the traffic situation getting in from the vip check-in was frankly stupid. After we turned in our vouchers for our parking sticker, it took us nearly 2 hours to get in. Sure it's not the 12 hour wait from year 1, but still a little more logistics in that department would go a long way.
On the plus side: It's BONNAROO!!!!! I forgot about the job for 4 days, got too much sun, drank really good beer (thank you brooers festival), didn't get nearly enough sleep and had one of the best roos ever.

overall, i had an amazing time. the music was great, i dont think i had any problems with security/staff/cops, except yea it seemed like i witnessed some of the staff members being a bit bossy a few times...
we did have one HUGE problem when we got into manchester...speak up if you had this problem too..after waiting for about 2 1/2 hrs we were directed at a couple of the exits to keep moving on the w. 24 shoulder and then directed to go to this random exit...and when we got to the stop sign there were absolutely no cops or signs telling us which way to go, it was like we got tricked, we were like wtf are we in the twilight zone or something?? we had no idea what to do so we turned back around the other way to go east on 24, waited another 2 or 3 hrs and took some really weird and long detour for another couple hrs...and get this, while we were waiting on the e. 24 shoulder we saw people pointed west across the street being directed right on to the campgrounds!! finally we wait an hr and a half or so for the searches and getting to our camp which ended up being goldmember (at the very least a mile away from centeroo)! im gonna have to say, they did a pretty awful job with the traffic on 24 this yr...... the dust was awful too, it made me feel sick, ive been wheezing and coughing and hacking. but aside from that, the really expensive food, and the stank smells from time to time, the shows were amazing, id say the music dfinitely made it all worth it.
on a more random note...where were all the corncat calls!? i tried it very loud a couple times were there were big crowds of people but with no nom nom's...

Well, I for one had a blast! I feel like this year I made more of an effort to see a little of everything and expand my horizons. I really felt like I got my money's worth. Some thoughts: -I felt like it was more efficient getting into the site, and the way things were run....it was a lot easier to get around. -A lot more variety in music, I feel like I really expanded my musical horizons, and got to see a little of everything -The lines getting into Centeroo were not that bad...it was a lot worse last year when Centeroo wasn't open 24 hours. We waited almost an hour in line to get into Centeroo last year. -The security getting into the gates was a pain in the ***....they rifled through all our stuff and left it laying out in the car, it was a complete mess. They also confiscated things and didn't even tell us. We had to find out when we unpacked the car. -SHAKEDOWN?! What happened to it? Apparently, because they bought the land on one side of the fence, the vendors on "Shakedown" (3rd ave) had to pay $2000 just to have a booth there, which is different than years past. That's why there were no vendors down that street. We were camped out in BFE, but that's where they stuck all the vendors who didn't pay to be on 3rd ave. To quote one of the vendors out there where we were..."THIS is Shakedown street. 3rd ave is Fakedown Street" (haha) -The crowd to me seemed a little different this year. More people there to party who didn't really seem to be into the music as much. I just felt like the atmosphere was a little different. I also saw a lot more children...PEOPLE...PUT SOME SHOES ON YOUR KIDS. I won't even go shoeless at 'Roo. That made me sad - All in all, it was a good Roo...I had a BLAST, got my money's worth, and really expanded musically. Gotta take the good with the bad. Will I be back next year? Probably. Not 100% yet, but as long as the lineup is good, they've got me

I noticed both of those things also - many more rude people, I got shoved, kicked, stepped on, and pushed with no apologies. Also the shoeless and sunburnt kids made me mad. If you are going to take your kids, then they should be taken care of properly.
I agree about the kids.. those little red sunburnt cheeks...that just made me mad It is one thing if you want to get burned..but come on...those kids cannot take care of themselves.

I agree 100% - there were a couple of times on Saturday that the vibe really reminded me of seeing the Dead back in '95, too many folks there just to get messed up just for the sake of being messed up. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy having fun, a lot of fun, but I felt genuinely bad for the gal I saw sitting in the brooers tent on Saturday mid day who was clearly not part of this planet - same for the gal who was freaking out in the port-o next to the wife on Friday. It's not a bad thing to party like crazy, but when the proportion of music fans vs party animals gets too out of balance, you wind up with gate crashers and other unsavory problems.
Overall, I had a great experience. Weather seemed a bit cooler despite it being so dry, there was less humidity and that made it easier to handle. I was in VIP, so most of my observations had to do with that.
Getting tickets for VIP and then to the campsite was the most retarded thing I have ever seen. We did not feel very important waiting 2.5 hours in a parking lot in line to get our tickets, only to sit in our car in the parking lot to pull out and sit on the road to go in to the campsite.
Some parking retard didn't segregate RV's and tents. It's not that hard. Tents to the left, RV's to the right. Luckily this ended up not affecting me as I was camped by a bunch of tenters, but still it was just a total lack of organization. Someone really dropped the ball and decided to take a nap at the wrong damn time. I think my wait for VIP was longer than the wait for GA, which really effing pissed me off.
But, the campsites were larger, I was parked near the showers and toilets, so really, once we were set up the long wait was forgotten. But then we had to wait in line for food and the caterers were really slow the first couple of days, and not planning to keep the food refreshed. After the Thursday night VIP party I was really tired of waiting in line for my VIP amenities. I didn't pay extra cash to wait in line.
But that's where leaving comes in to play. I didn't have to wait in the god awful GA exit line, we got right out and on to the highway. So in the end, that made it all worth it. I ended up with some great neighbors, met a few people from the boards, and had a great time.
My band schedule was packed, and I couldn't be happier with what we saw. I really don't know how people have the energy for the late nights, but as I was nodding off in VIP to flips on saturday I did feel a slight pang in my chest and then cursed my throbbing pinky toes for my current state.
Except for the blisters on my pinky toes. DO NOT think that crocs that are a size too big are going to be okay. I woke up friday morning and it looked like one toe was growing a toe.
The Police crowd threw me off. At first I was in the extremely packed VIP bleachers, which was fine until some dickbag next to me was way in to it and didn't mind bumping me while he was drumming with his glow sticks. Don't get me wrong - feel free to get in to it - but don't be so oblivious that you don't realize you are making your neighbor miserable. Later, I had some dude trip on me while I was sitting on the lawn and he didn't even say sorry. But for the most part we were around cool folks and didn't have any issues. I didnt have time to cross the VIP divide though, that simply would have required more energy than I had.
I did not get searched ONCE getting in and out of VIP. Not even my car. VIP guys took whole beer coolers in to Centeroo with them. I went in through the arches once and it was just a quick peek in my bag.
MOST kids I saw were well taken care of. But one family I saw early friday, looking pretty normal, had a mom that decided to get her chest painted in lieu of clothing by Saturday, and something about that kinda bugged me out. I saw some really iddy biddy babies that I wouldn't have dreamed bringing to 'roo. I hope they were locals.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

I couldn't agree more....I think people just figured out how to jump the line. When it started getting close to time for the doors to open, people would rush to the front and try to jump the line. It was really bad on Sunday...we waited for 2 hours in the heat to see Demitri Martin, and people started to jump the line...I just went and talked to a safety guy, and he took care of it. They could've used a little more crowd control over there though, a lot of people were really mad!
agree about the decline of VIP. i didn't get there til late Thurs, so thankfully i didn't have to wait to get in. my main gripe is the fact that not only did VIP tix go up in price, but the beer was more expensive $4 vs $3 last yr, the food was much crappier (and they only had one menu per day - who wants to eat burgers at noon and then again at 6?), and the lines were much longer. getting into the venue on Fri was painful...and i thought it was a tad unprofessional of the superfly crew to blame it all on tool.
overall it just seemed like they sold more tix for more money, but didn't hold up their end of the deal when it came to service, amenities, etc.

I'm very dissapointed in Bonnaroo this year, I had a great time, saw a lot of shows but i felt like i was stabbed in the back. We were chilling at our camp site just talking to eachother, we weren't being loud or rude to our neighbors or anything of the sort. All of a sudden 2 police officers came right into our canopy (friend was packing a glass piece at the time) and they busted us. The cops were nice but it was completely bogus. I brought a lot of cash with me to spend on clothes and various other things to remember this year's bonnaroo but the cops ruined all of that. I just saved my money to pay off a $406 ticket that will go off my record as soon as it is payed.
A couple of anecdotes about security at this year's Roo:
As I go through line to get patted down I always pull everything from my pockets to make it easier on security. As I was waved through I was stopped by the yellow shirt guy and he asked to look at my open cigarette pack. Just as I handed it to him the grey shirt guy (the supervisor I guess) tapped the yellow shirt guy on the shoulder and said "He's good...let him go." As I walked past the grey shirt guy said to me, " Thanks for being patient with us, man". I thought that was very cool for him to say.
I camped out on the barrier that runs between the Which Stage and the soundboard on Sunday to get a good spot for the White Stripes. One of the security guys would walk down between the barriers and pop any balloon or beach ball that fell between the barriers. This young fella was given an absolute horrible time for this, and was even called out by the Decemberists for killing the beach balls. I saw people in the crowd throw stuff at this guy and call him every name in the book. As he was walking by with his supervisor, I heard him complaining that everybody hated him because his supervisor had told him to pop any ball that came into the barrier.
What do these two stories tell us? Sometimes its the regular security guys overstepping their duties and sometimes it's just them doing what they are told. I also have to agree with most of you that if I had to assign blame for the problems I would generally put it on the crowd that came to "party" and not necessarily see some life-changing shows.
We enjoyed this years 'roo but not quite as much as the previous year.
1). The Police seemed very flat to me - others around us at the show had the same opinion. Their timing was off quite a bit on some songs, at one point Sting said, "Thank you Bonnaroo, Tennesee!" - what the hell? It's like they were treating Bonnaroo like it was just another tour date. I really think that they should've brought out the greatest hits set instead of playing a set like there are all hardcore Police fans there. Maybe they should take a cue from Petty the year before? That was a much better show in my opinion. We left The Police show early and went over to wait for The Flaming Lips to go on at the Which stage. We were pleasantly surprised by Wayne and Co. doing a rousing version of "War Pigs" as their sound check. Well worth leaving a sub-par Police set...
2). As others have mentioned - I think the crowd was a little off this year. I don't know if it's the mixture of Tool fans in the crowd or what it was - but there seemed to be more meat heads than the year previous. We encountered lots of rude people just being plain stupid and inconsiderate. Why insist on pushing through a crowd that is already shoulder to shoulder and then wearing a huge hat on top of it - blocking the view of everyone behind you? That's just inconsiderate... THINK OF THE OTHERS AROUND YOU!
3). Again, as others have already mentioned - there were a lot of folks there this year that were only there for the party scene and nothing else. 10 minutes into getting settled into our camp site there was a fist fight between some drugged up idiot and a guy who was just minding his own business until the dude hit him with a flag pole. I never saw anything even close to that last year.
4). Camping spots - what's the deal? We were there at 4AM on Thursday and were in line for a couple of hours - that's expected. What's not expected is that we were shuffled to the back of the complex in the furthest camp site away from Centeroo. Why? We made the effort and showed up early and were essentially punished for doing so. I think they need to re-think the placement of camp sites. People who show up early on day one should be placed closer to Centeroo and those who show up later should have camp sites that are further away. Why punish those who are interested in being there early on day one?
5). DUST! I saw the water trucks out and about but it didn't seem like they were out enough. I understand that there's a drought going on in Tennessee but the roads were drying up immediately after the water trucks went over them.
Overall though, really - we had a great time and our neighbors were quite nice. The Flaming Lips late night show was totally awesome and it was the highlight of my 'roo experience this year. Tool was very good barring the first couple of songs' audio issues. Ziggy Marley's show was great. We saw a lot of bands and drank and ate too much - and that's what the festival is all about.

I was a little disappointed, but I'm still glad I went, because I would have regretted not going a lot more than going.
The crowd really did seem off...the Bonnaroo calls didn't carry at all. Last year you could scream it anytime and it seemed like it would go through the entire campground, and this year maybe two others would pick it up. I don't think it was just a lot of first-timers...it was people that just didn't get it.
There seemed to be a lot more people walking around selling farmies and yayo, and not caring about the music, like a disproportionate number compared to last year. I really like the idea of new people being exposed to Bonnaroo, but this year it seemed like there were a lot of people just going to make some money and/or party.
I'm really glad someone explained why Shakedown seemed like every other street...I was thinking I might be imagining things! It was nothing like I remembered, although it didn't ruin anything.
The dust and heat were a lethal combination, but I take solace in that fact...at least a lot of the people who came this year and didn't understand the spirit will be scared off. Maybe next year will be a refresher, but I have my worries.

one security girl checked INSIDE MY CANTEEN, IN MY WALLET, etc, and I had to wait like an hour to get through the arch. rediculous.
dust = lung shattering
the glass was on plantation street, along with more vendors
edit: oh yeah, i saw the hottest chick EVER dancing to wolfmother. she was wearing green tight shorts that said "PEACE" on the back. anyone run into her? YOWZA

First, heres a pic of me and my bud on the ferris wheel...
So...my first 'roo and it was awesome..BUT...we arrived at 7 am thursday and was put in girl thingy Galore, which is WAY out there. That walk was ridiculous. The line for Centeroo on friday was TERRIBLE. It was a little over an hour and its the first time i have ever came close to passing out.
Also i wish it would have been made a bit more clear as to finding Camp Inforoo...I never found it
One last thing...Real Tool fans are some of the most mellow people you will ever meet so blaming them for the rudeness is ridiculous...I believe Bonnaroo has simply made a name for itself as the most drug filled event in the country and that has inevitably attracted a certain amount of problem causers...maybe thats the reason for the security issues this year...i even had a bag of chewing tobacco opened and searched...But its hard to complain about the security and then turn around and complain about the partying crowd...
I wore my inforoo shirt thursday and the only person that recognized it was a lady sitting on the little patio at the troo music place by the bobbleheads. She had short reddish? hair.
I'll just make a quick general observation. It seems to me that they were skimping on alot of things this year. Like it wasn't pulled together the way it should have been.
-Dust. That sh!t was absolutely ridiculous. Some people didn't seem to be bothered by it, but during the White Stripes, I literally couldn't breathe for a bit. Not good. It seems to me that they could hand out surgical masks or something. At least make an announcement on the radio saying that you shouldn't be breathing in that shite. I wore my bandanna as much as I could, but it just made me hotter sometimes.
-Security. It was really bad on Thursday. They checked every nook and cranny of my bag and everything in my pockets. I had no problems with anything after that though. Fast moving lines = Great Success.
So yeah, overall it seems like the logistical things should be getting better, but I think they took a slight step backwards this year, for whatever reason. I can't really complain though, cause I had a great time despite the most enormous blister that made me hobble around like an 80 year old man on Sunday. Good times.
First, I want to thank the people I met in the Inforoo Camp. You were all very cool and it was nice to get to know you a little bit. It takes me awhile to warm up to people, so this might be a multi-year relationship for us. ;-) But seriously, I did enjoy my time with you, even if I might've seemed a bit quiet.
I was surprised by the petty theft in the camp area. Several people mentioned having things taken, and I had 2 things stolen: 1) my toothpaste. Yes, I know it's weird. At first I figured I must've misplaced it. But it never showed up and the General Store was sold out of toothpaste and I'm convinced someone got desperate and stole mine. It felt so good to brush my teeth when I got home. 2) someone stole my pack stool. Hey Mother Fucker, that cost me $25! not a very nice person!
Other than that, the shows were cool, the venue was overwhelming at first but eventually pretty groovy, and the dust was horrific. (Note to self: Next year bring a bandana or dust mask).
I was disappointed in The Police. I'm a child of the 70's + 80's, so I thought they would be great, but personally I didn't think their music held up that well and I think the Bonnaroo venue worked against them. Their attempts to expand their songs and sound "jamming" sounded really weak to me. Summers is not a great soloist, and while Copeland is an incredible drummer/percussionist, and Sting is a decent bassist, it just didn't hold up for me.
My favorite shows were (in no particular order): Gov't Mule, Mavis Staples, Wilco, White Stripes, Widespread Panic, American Babies, STS9, The Black Angels, Gillian Welch, Richard Thompson.
