I've been to a dozen different festivals, but never Wakarusa. I love the lineup, which is the most important part, but want to be sold on the rest of the festival. To those that have been before, try to sell it to me.
Dude... Go. It's such a laid-back atmosphere, in a beautiful setting. I hate to use the "v" word, but the vibe is unreal at Wakarusa. Spirits are absolutely soaring the whole time, and every set is a dance party. Even the mid-afternoon bluegrass sets will have tons of people getting down.
One cool thing about Waka that they introduced last year is the 24/7 music. Once the music starts on Thursday, it never stops until the last band plays on Sunday. They'll have bands play all day, usually make the switch to more electronic-themed late nights (with a few exceptions, of course), and keep the late nights going through sunrise. Once the sun rises, they have singer-songwriters play for a few hours until the bands start back up at noon. There's always something to see.
Also, if you like glow toys, Waka is the place to be.
I mean I wouldn't use that to describe Bonnaroo...
Edit: I suppose you're right though, as far as smaller festivals go. It's easier to achieve that sort of communal, family type bond with a smaller amount of people. It really feels special at Wakarusa though. I just can't explain it.

The phish kid was cool but the bus driver scream oh hells Naw and praying cuz the brakes were bur ing was sketch. But honestly Waka is amazing. It's a beautiful setting, there's a river to swim in and cool off. Security is super chill. Everyone is happy. Just a bunch of people existing together with no problems. And no mounted police men.

Maybe "beautiful setting" is pushing it a bit at Roo but depending on where you're from it could be considered beautiful. The heat is everyone's main complaint about Roo.
My main point was that I've heard that description for Rothbury, All Good, Summer Camp, moe.down, Nateva, Mountain Jam, Newport Folk, etc.
The fishing is equal distance between the woods and mainstage. You have to cross the highway to get to the fishing and music area. Plus you only need one pass for a car so whoever you go with, you can split the cost. Plus it would be nice to listen to music from your camp.

I also have a ticket and will have a main stage camping pass this week... I'm with you though, FM, I'm wondering if main stage is really worth it. Either way, you and Brian both need to make the trip!

For all you last.fm freaks, Sang linked me to a station that has all of the 2011 artists playing at random. It's the easiest way I've found to do surface research to see what's worth looking into.

Lucero will be a really good show, guaranteed. I wish they would play more of the older stuff though, seems like most of their live material comes from Rebels, Rogues, and Sworn Brothers.
I'm extremely excited for These United States. I didn't think I would ever get the chance to see them.
