Passion isn't defined by one day of good basketball. Besides, if they couldn't get up for this game they didn't deserve to be on the team. Passion alone won't win you games either, Butler played with a lot of passion today and still couldn't weather the storm. I didn't see very much of the game, I was watching the App State football game, but I can say with fair certainty that UNC won today because they finally made more than half their free throws and Kentucky still doesn't really understand team basketball, which is no surprise under Calipari, I also get the impression, based on this and the UConn game, that they can't handle the pressure of a close game, because they are so young.
Still it was a good win for them, but not a surprise in the least. The odds makers had unc favored early on, it was even by tip. Kentucky is hardly an invincible team, but congrats, this is the win that keeps you from having to worry about the NIT.

Free throws were important, but rebounds and defense were the keys to the game. The Heels played tough in the paint, with Zeller and Henson playing like the bigs they are capable of being. In general, it's not a good idea to talk about how a game was won if you didn't watch it. Makes you look like you're talking out of your ass.

I was called out regarding my comments on their passion, which is silly considering the players themselves have been quoted as saying they weren't playing with enough passion, therefore I responded.
Zeller should be commended for stepping up as a leader, but to be honest, he should've had a big game considering Kentucky has no big man worth speaking of. A large part of basketball is matchups and exploiting your advantage. Everything I said about Kentucky is true, I didn't need to watch this game to know any of it. I must be one smart guy if I can talk out of my ass and still be right on all counts.
In seriousness, though, you can say that they only got up for the Kentucky game because they had to, but the reality was they played really hard and won a game they needed to. They showed that they still have life and can still hang tough and beat good teams. And I don't think it's a temporary thing; I think the Kentucky win will be a momentum-builder for them, especially with Zeller and Henson playing so well down low. Harrison played well for half the game, too. Maybe pretty soon we can get him to play well the whole game.

They looked like they were having fun out there, and Zeller seemed to be the catalyst for that. I think he's starting to figure out how to be the team's leader. He seems to really come alive when teams start banging him around. From time to time, he has shown a little of that spark the other Tyler had. He keeps it up, and this team will be pretty good by February.

You guys have directed all discussion, I simply give my opinions. My original plan was for a non-partisan discussion thread, but considering only 3 people on this board care about college basketball and 2 of them are tarholes, it seems all for not.

I think we are all Gus Johnson fans, whether or not we choose to admit it.
I'm very pleased with Duke's performance so far, though there are quite a few things they need to work on before the stretch, they have gotten away with some spotty execution at times. They aren't unbeatable by any stretch, but they are one of the more flexible teams, which helps a lot.
Drew is just not good. I was all for letting him grown into his role, but this is his third year, and he still plays like a freshman. At this point I don't think we can do worse with Kendall in there -- if we're going to suck, let's at least get him some game experience.
Thank God this actually came to pass.
Good win for Duke last night (as much as is pains me to say that), but with Drew II in there, we probably would have lost by 20.
ETA: on second thought, it was a Wonerful win for Duke.
Not a huge NCAA basketball fan but I've been following this season since UGA has been playing decently. They love to give up huge leads in the second half, though.
Figured I give this a bump since March is almost here.

Man, I wish I would've seen this thread earlier. Things are looking up in Wisconsin. UW is headed for a solid 3 or 4 seed, Marquette should be solidly in with a road win at UConn, and UWM is hosting their conference tournament as the 1 seed.
And oh, I love Jimmer and BYU and all, but if they somehow get a 1 seed over someone like Texas/Duke/Pitt because those three have been 'losing' recently, I'll scream. Don't think it's going to happen but I've noticed some "experts" have given BYU a 1 seed currently.

I don't know -- BYU has a pretty good resume going into the end of the season. We know that the way a team is playing come tourney time does factor in to the committee's decisions, but they will look at other numbers as well.
If the choice for a 1 seed is between BYU and Duke, for example, the committee will probably look at Duke's play since losing Irving. I think they're like 3-3 against decent (tourney-bound or bubble) teams since he was injured. But maybe even more important between those two teams is that BYU leads the nation with 10 true road wins, they have a higher RPI than Duke, a better SOS than Duke, more wins than Duke, and more wins against the top 50 than Duke.
I think that the conference tourneys are going to be more important this year than they have been recently. Still a lot of ball to be played.

I suppose I maybe shouldn't have thrown Duke in there. However, RPI is a pretty flawed metric for determining ranking of teams. Your opponents opponents winning % weighs in just as heavily as your own win %. Obviously BYU's awesome record contributes to their #1 RPI, but they've also played 12 games against teams who've played the 25-2 SDSU team, which greatly boosts it as well. Arguing that a team has a good RPI AND SOS is a little redundant (I'm not picking on you or anything, everyone does it. In fact for all I know you're just using those cause that's what the committee seems to use.) It's kind of like saying Pujols leads baseball in home runs AND slugging percentage.
At the end of the day I still think BYU is a top 8 or so team, just slightly overrated.
