In fact for all I know you're just using those cause that's what the committee seems to use.
Exactly. I was talking about the numbers the committee will look at.
While I agree that RPI is an imperfect measurement of a team's quality, I disagree that RPI and SOS are redundant because RPI also takes into account how well a team performed in their schedule.
If they were redundant, you wouldn't get these kinds of numbers: Duke has the #37 SOS (lowest of the top 15 RPI teams) and #5 RPI, while Tennessee has the #2 SOS but the #35 RPI.
Similarly, G'Town has the #1 SOS, and Penn State's sched is similar with a #9 SOS, but their performances with those schedules gives them #8 and #56 RPI, respectively.
Performance matters in RPI, but not SOS, so I don't think using one measurement exclusively provides as complete a picture as using them both.
Looking forward to the Big East getting 11 teams in the tournament, and then getting to listen to whiny ACC fans about why their crap teams didn't make it.
The only ACC team I will whine about getting shut out of the tourney is UNC, and I don't think I need to worry about that. I certainly don't care whether Clemson or VT get in the tourney.
Also, I read a good quote today. Something about how the case for Florida State and VTech making the tournament is centered entirely around how they've beaten Duke, since they have no other victories that matter and play in a weak conference, where when St. John's beat Duke nobody assumed that was basically them punching their ticket. An interesting point about the perception of the ACC.
I bet it had less to do with any perception of the ACC, and more to do with the fact that when St. John's beat Duke their record went to 12-8, with two of those 8 losses being bad ones to St. Bonnie's and Fordham.
Now that they have shown they are a consistent team and not a 12-8 type team, they are projected as a solid 4 seed, deservedly well ahead of FSU, who has a better W/L total, and VT who has the same W/L total as St. John's but may not even get in.
Also, I wouldn't count out Pitt. They've been consistently among the top-5 teams in the country, and they're more than likely going to win the best/toughest conference title. If they win the Big East tournament as well, I think they're a lock for a #1, and depending on how everything else breaks, they might be a lock regardless. I think it's going to be OSU/Kansas/Pitt/BYU, and if BYU falters between now and selection Sunday, you replace them with Duke, Purdue or Notre Dame, depending.
I think the consensus is Pitt, KU, and OSU getting three of the one seeds.
With the loss of BYU's best post player, they should be knocked down to a 2 -- and I think the committee will do so regardless of what else BYU does. It will be interesting to see which of those other three teams gets that 1 seed.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Really looking forward to Wisc-KSU. Kansas State is 4th in the country in offensive rebounding % and Wisconsin is 8th in defensive %. Aside from that though, Kansas State doesn't really do anything all that exceptionally well, so if they don't dominate the glass I think UW's got a good shot at advancing. They just have to defend like they have the last two games as opposed to the previous two weeks.
I hope Kansas State doesn't get payback for the beatdown Wisconsin put on Beasley/Walker and co. in '08 .

I would be embarrassed to admit who is in my Final Four in my ESPN bracket. Huge homer moves. My Inforoo bracket is more realistic, however I am currently 22nd out of 25.

Well, yeah, they should advance at least 4. Syr/Marq and UConn/Cincy winners are in, and if the Big East #1 and #2 teams can't beat Florida State and Butler, then the conference deserves to be mocked. Getting 4 out of 11 past the first weekend would be worse than the 3 of 8 that made it last year. actually be an improvement over the 2 of 8 that made it last year. So that's progress.
I mean, the problem is that as it's set up, it's impossible for them to advance more than 5, since they've got teams playing each other. They kind of got boned there.
Come on now, that's not how that math works. They could have gotten 9 past the first weekend. They can only get 5 through now because they shit the bed against mid-majors again this year.

GM is a mid-major, regardless. Butler is a mid-major who lost their best player from last year. UK is not a mid-major. This is true. I didn't think WV would beat them, and they didn't. Mizzou is also not a mid-major, nor is Clemson. Those are the two BE wins over majors so far -- both 11 seeds, one being one of the last four teams in the tourney. The Zags are a mid-major by definition. In previous years, you could say they had more than mid-major talent, but not this year. They showed what they are made of tonight getting blown out by BYU.
This isn't a small sample size at all. This is 11 of the 16 teams in the so-called "best" conference. Three of them will be left next weekend, unless ND loses to FSU (another game against a major conference -- uh oh).
I find it a little humorous that the argument that the Big East only had a shot at 5 spots in the Sweet 16 can be easily be flipped into the Big East is insured 2 slots in the Sweet Sixteen because they're playing each other.

No, Gtown should probably not have been selected, and people were saying that before they got blown out by a mid-major last night. The same goes for Nova, who lost 10 of their last 15 before losing to a mid-major in the first round. This isn't the same thing as saying a mid-major conference is getting too little respect after one team wins one game. This is about a conference getting way too much respect despite the fact that the very best they can do in the last 2 years of the tourney is 4 or 5 of 19 teams getting past the first weekend.
Yes, this is one game per each team. Then again, these are the games that matter, not the games against other teams in your overrated conference.
Congrats on your team advancing. That's really all that matters. If UNC loses and FSU wins tomorrow, I won't feel any better because the ACC got a win.
I'm confused. So when the Butler guy body checks a Pitt player on a loose ball 60 feet away from a basket chasing down a horrible pass, it's a foul. But when a Texas player is driving to hoop and gets hip checked on a shot attempt, it's incidental contact.
Because the NCAA is all about consistency.
The officiating has been absolutely terrible, and as long as fat old guys who can't keep up are allowed to officiate these games, it's never going to change.

Big sigh of relief over here too. I was finally able to exhale a couple minutes ago.
Congrats, approo. I sure would like a rematch in the Final Four. Doubt it will happen, and I think you guys have a better chance of getting there than us, but in the meantime I'll be pulling for you guys. Nah, who am I kidding? I hope you get blown out every time you hit the court. But I say that with love.

I feel the same way. I can't ever possibly imagine doing anything close to pulling for you guys, but at this point in the year I'm really only worried about one team. So congrats on making it this far, we can both relax for three days, four in your case. A Final Four match up would be one of the most anxiety inducing events imaginable, but I'm all for it.

I'm just glad the Big East is proving why they got 11 teams into the tourney. It's tough to get 2 teams into the Sweet 16, though. I mean, I'm pretty sure that the horrible SEC couldn't get 2 teams that far if they had 11 teams in the tourney -- oh wait...
Best moment of the night: Charles Barkley rubbing the Big East's implosion in Rick Pitino's face, and Pitino looking like he wanted to punch Chuck square in the jaw.
