So I saw them a long time ago, though I did not really start to see them regularly until 1995/1996 but really after this set I never looked back. I actually went and mowed a neighbors lawn the next morning to save up and by Junta (on tape) so I could listen to it in my car. It was at the HORDE festival back in 1993 I had just turned 16, and went with some friends and their parents. Well I wanted some corn so I wandered up to the top of the stairs by the concession stand and saw this band playing on a little bitty stage I had heard of them but not listened to the music before then, and my mind was blown.
Anyone else have any good first show stories?
07/30/93 • The Veranda at Starwood Amphitheater • Antioch , TN Set 1: Contact, Llama, Horn, Uncle Pen, Stash, Esther, Chalkdust Torture, I Didn't Know, Reba, Cavern
Set 2: Also Sprach Zarathustra > Tweezer, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Poor Heart, Fluffhead, My Friend My Friend, Golgi Apparatus, The Squirming Coil, David BowieEncore: Walk Away, Amazing Grace
Stage was set up in the concession area of the Amp.
Both the Bonnaroo shows were good imo, but I would not have wanted them to be my first. As much as I love outdoors Phish watching them destroy an indoor arena is really my favorite way to see them. I was at the Asheville show right before Bonnaroo, and it was a rager compared to the 'roo shows.
I liked all the covers on Friday, plus the rarity of a 3 hour solid set, they kind of lost me about 2 hours in though, and did not get me back until the Harry Hood/YEM. The first set of the second night was really good as well, plus getting a guest is always cool, not to mention I missed Bruce but the only song I really wanted to hear was Glory Days. However the second set fell really flat for me. That being said any Phish is good Phish, and I only really did not enjoy it when they started noodling after 2001 or so.

My first Phish show was at the US Air Arena in Maryland on Dec 28th 1997. No great story, other than I was on shrooms and had no idea that we had 3rd row center seats until we got there.
It was a life changing experience for me, and my views on music have never been the same ;D I may not listen to them all the time, but I have a very big soft spot in my heart for Trey and the boys.
Setlist:
Set 1: Julius, Cities > The Curtain > Sample in a Jar, The Old Home Place > Runaway Jim, Farmhouse, Funky Bitch, Split Open and Melt, Bouncing Around the Room, Character Zero
Set 2: Axilla > Simple, Ghost > Drowned > Scent of a Mule, Halley's Comet > Slave to the Traffic Light, Rocky Top > Cavern

I loved the Friday show but not so much the Sunday show.

^You have been pushing hard that looks like my 95-99 schedule. I did 6 in 09, and just three this year. What was your favorite so far? 7/4 Alph was one hell of a show imo.

Thought this was a great show and really sold me on Phish, as I had been indifferent beforehand. Great time, had a ton of friends there. Heck of an experience for a 16 year old.
For the record I though the Sunday Bonnaroo show was better. Friday had its moments, but it was so similar to my first, and only other show at the time, that parts were a bit of a let down. I was happy to finally see A Day in the Life.

My first show was 3/8/09 at Hampton, the Sunday show. I was in Hampton all weekend and it was a pretty interesting Friday and Saturday to say the least. I almost got ran over by Mike in a golf cart, among other random events.
All weekend I kept thinking about what cover song I want to hear the most. I was torn between While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Frankenstein... all the way up until walking into the coliseum I really just couldn't pick a favorite and decided I'd be happy with either of them. The first set was coming to an end and sure enough there was Frankenstein. Afterwards I was pretty happy with it and was just excited for the 2nd set. That's when 2001 > The Moma Dance > While My Guitar Gently Weeps happened and to make a indescribable moment simple... I lost my sh!t and was overwhelmed with this strange sense of how bummed I had been when missing both the Friday and Saturday night show, but clearly this was the show I was intended to see to begin my journey into Phish. It's certainly not my favorite show I have seen since, but it was one of the more special moments I have felt while at one of their shows.
Favorite show would have to be 6/10/09 in Knoxville before Bonnaroo. The show was an absolute rager. When Jess mentioned above "watching them destroy an indoor arena" that is basically what they did. We were stuck in the lot for the longest time after the show and realized upon trying to leave that the car battery was dead. We were probably one of the last cars out of the lot, but right when we got on the highway headed towards the Roo we noticed 3 huge buses merging onto the highway behind us. Basically we followed Phish for most of the way to Roo, but eventually we were starving and had to get some Waffle House.

I was supposed to go see Siouxsie and the Banshees on 5/01/94, but the sky opened up and flooded everything and the show was cancelled before anyone could actually get to the venue. So I traded my Siouxsie tickets for this show:
Saturday, 05/07/1994 The Bomb Factory, Dallas, TX Soundcheck: Jazz Jam, Dog Log (slow reggae version), Blues Jam
Set 1: Llama, Horn[1] -> The Divided Sky, Mound, Fast Enough for You, Scent of a Mule, Split Open and Melt, If I Could, Suzy Greenberg
Set 2: Loving Cup, Sparkle, Tweezer -> Sparks -> Makisupa Policeman -> Digital Delay Loop Jam -> Sweet Emotion Jam -> Walk Away[2] -> Cannonball Jam -> Purple Rain > Hold Your Head Up Jam -> Tweezer Reprise
Encore: Amazing Grace, Sample in a Jar
[1] Ended with a brief, atypical jam. [2] The jam after Walk Away included a Page solo, teases of It's Ice and McGrupp, and a Simpsons signal.
Notes: Horn ended with a brief, atypical jam. The jam after Walk Away included a Page solo, teases of It’s Ice and McGrupp, and a Simpsons signal. This show was officially released as Live Phish 18.
But Cincinnati on 11/21/09 really blew me away (Thanks Jess!!). I agree with the others, there is a huge difference between an arena show and an outdoor show.

I almost went Gouge Away offered me a ticket, but I just could not justify the 28 hours of driving for a three hour show. I still was really close though.

That show was completely nuts, 5 people in a small hotel room, and like 19 degrees outside. They need to get near enough for us to do that again.

Cincy is still up there as one of my favorites. Absolutely loved everything about those shows. Vibes, people, hotel situation, travel, ........ everything.
Tuesday, 02/26/1991 The Barrel House, Salem, VA Set 1: Cavern, Foam, The Squirming Coil, Llama, Guelah Papyrus, My Sweet One, Reba, The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > AC/DC Bag, Golgi Apparatus, La Grange
Set 2: Buried Alive > Runaway Jim, Dinner and a Movie, Stash, Bouncing Around the Room, The Landlady > Destiny Unbound, Possum, The Lizards, Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove
Encore: Hold Your Head Up > Love You > Hold Your Head Up, Good Times Bad Times
I was all of 18 and getting ready to graduate from high school. My granola friends wanted to go to the show. I had never heard Phish but in passing between them. But it was a local show and they had party favors ... so I went. and after that encore I kept going. I think I saw them 3 times that year. Charlottesville and Richmond, in the fall.
No good tales to tell. Everyone knew better than to party in Salem.
EDIT: As of Feb. it will have been 20 years since my first Phish show. Thanks Jess for making me feel old.

I started listening in 2002 or so. Not much, I think I made a mix cd of songs off of Limewire/Napster. Quinn from Hampton Comes Alive, Bouncing from ALO, If I Could from the '94 Nashville show, etc.
I wasn't old enough to travel during '03 and '04. I didn't have an older sibling or parent who got me into them or took me to shows.
Got really big into them during the "breakup".
Now I take what I can get. Trust me, I know I missed out on Hampton '97, Fall '94, Big Cypress. Imagine me sitting there in '05 listening to shows thinking I'd never be able to see them. That sucked. So I've jumped at the chance to see them as much as I can now.

We can't all be 30+.
July 4th this year was pretty much as good a show as I have ever seen except for the Waste flub it was close to perfect imo.
They used to play down here a lot more, you would get 1 or 2 Tennessee dates a year plus 2 at Deer Creek, and usually a couple in Atlanta.
what happened?
Well 09 had 3 technically. I have no idea why they have not made it back to Nashville or Memphis though. Always amazing shows, last time in Nashville Bela Fleck sat in for the 2nd set. Then In Murfreesboro Fishman sang Wind Beneath My Wings to Col Bruce.
Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of my first show. It was at the Spectrum in Philadelphia which was recently torn down. It was a sad moment to see the wrecking ball hit. Lots of good time in that building. In all, I saw Phish there six times.

Alpine Valley, 8.10.96
Set 1: My Friend, My Friend, Poor Heart, AC/DC Bag > Fee[1] > Reba, I Didn't Know, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Rift, Bathtub Gin, Cavern
Set 2: Wilson, Down with Disease, Scent of a Mule[2], Free, Fluffhead, Hold Your Head Up > Whipping Post > Hold Your Head Up, Harry Hood, A Day in the Life
Encore: Contact, Fire
All I remember is that I had to drive way out to a remote Piggly Wiggly to get the tickets (remember back in the day when you had to wait in line at an actual store to buy tickets?) the logic being that there would be fewer people in line for tickets the farther away you got from civilization.
Hoist was the first record of theirs I really got into (my pledge dad gave it to me for Christmas the year before) so I remember being pretty pleased with the setlist. And I actually do remember "Whipping Post", that was a treat. Other than that...well, it's Alpine. You'd have to really try to have a bad time there.
