I don't know, it just didn't grab me by the collar and scream "this is awesome" in my face, which is what the first 2 Strokes records did to me. Julian's solo album was very 80's and I dug that alot. Maybe I just need more time with it, because I didn't love First Impressions of Earth at first, but it grew on me a bit.

I had a hugely different expectations! Maybe baffled wasn't the right word; regardless, it didn't immediately connect with me. But after maybe four or five spins I love it!
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
It's not really a grower, your first impression is probably going to stay your impression even if you listen to it 30 times.
Gotta disagree big time on this one. The album really did nothing for me on my first listen, but for some reason I found myself coming back. Now I can't stop listening to it, and I'd put it right up their with the debut for the title of strongest Strokes album.
It's weird to read how much the band hates this album when I think it is pretty fucking good. Especially the supremely textured production -- never thought I'd be saying that about the Strokes, but damn, after listening to the vinyl, I'm really thinking this album is quite close to being a sonic masterpiece.

Yeah, I would disagree that it's not a grower. I know a lot of people who have said it has grown with subsequent listens. I've only listened once, but that's how I was with Under Cover of Darkness.

To each their own i guess. I liked it instantly, but a friend of mine didn't really start liking it until he gave it a listen a couple more times. I like the album through and through, but my favorite tracks are Machu Picchu, Under Cover Of Darkness, and Taken For A Fool

Wow a fan managed to talk himself into liking a mediocre album. Whodathunkit?

So, I haven't listened to The Strokes since there debut album since I am a big ole Leno. However, after seeing that they were playing this year, I've gotten their entire discography and been listening hardcore. These guys are so Coco it hurts. I can't believe I've been missing it all of these years.

You from NYC? Try and get tickets for their MSG show this Friday.

I am in NYC, but unfortunately I'm completely broke and saving all my cash for Bonnaroo. I'm definitely going to check them out there.

I'd love to see The Strokes play late night, although there would be too many conflicts for me to fully enjoy it without feeling like I'm missing out on other sets. I really hope they close Which on Sunday opposite Robert Plant on What, so it can be an easy decision.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I really don't understand how The Strokes vs Robert Plant is an easy decision.. It's a conflict that I am dreading the most.
Good find with that article! During their performance on Letterman last week, I was amazed at how much Albert had changed physically over the last decade. I had heard he was in rehab but that article's explicit mention of him "nodding off in the studio" makes things a lot more clear. Glad to hear he is getting help.

As cool as it would be to be able to say I've seen Robert Plant, from what I've heard his voice isn't what it used to be and I don't really have an urge to hear a bunch of folk covers. I'd just have more fun at The Strokes.

Saw Robert Plant (for the first time) last year with Alison Kraus. Believe me he is not lacking in voice. I'm not saying it's as good as it was when he was 25 years old but he's certainly still worth seeing.
I was not happy with the album. The album goes in two directions. One sounds like classical strokes which I dig, the other just seems like a cassablanca solo album. I always dug the way the band played together and well frankly half of it doesnt even sound like a band.

The Band of Joy plays a tonne of Zeppelin covers and like has been mentioned, all the reviews I've read about recent shows have stated Plant's voice is still top notch.

I try not to think about this. I dont know what Ill do with myself if that happens (And I dont really see it not happening)
Has anyone even confirmed the strokes for Sunday? I doubt they'll put them up against Robert plant, knowing that both will bring some of the biggest draws of the weekend...

Where else would they go though? With MMJ, The Decemberists and Primus all on Friday and The Black Keys and Mumford & Sons on Saturday I see no other fit for the Strokes than Sunday
