Prince? Hes a veteran of the music world...magistrate idk. You could certainly say he is a character. In fact he even went BY a character (symbol). And it would be hard to abdicate your princehood when your name is prince.

King Crimson
veteran (the band), magistrate (king), and character (king crimson). they can't abdicate the throne because it's not a real throne/king. and crabs are red (crimson)

Do you think the clue is describing a 3 piece band consisting of a "veteran," a person who has been in music for a long time, a "magistrate" or "character of sorts" (no idea on that one) and a drummer who is extremely talented (double meaning on a throne that can't be abdicated, meaning a drummer (throne) who is not rivaled by many other drummers?
Oysterhead?
Veteran = Trey Anastasio (tours, etc) Magistrate (character of sorts) = Les Claypool Drummer = Stewart Copeland
My first thought is something with a royalty in the name like Kings of Leon or Queens of the Stone Age. Haven't fit the rest in, but that would be throne you can't abdicate.
I think we have two words here -- the character and the throne / fort ....
My first guess is Alberta Cross .. the city was named after royalty and a cross / crucifix is a throne that the King of Jews could not step down from.
There is a Crabwood crop circle that someone could take another direction, too ...
On December 5, 2010, Fripp wrote a diary entry on his DGM website outlining his current stage of involvement in the music industry. The diary entry suggests that the King Crimson "switch" has been set to "off" and details a number of reasons why he is not currently interested in performing or writing with the band.

The only thing that is flimsy about my 3 man theory is that in the context they seem to be using character (meaning a unique individual) isn't really synonymous with "magistrate"

i like the reasoning and oysters and crabs kinda go together but i just don't see any reason for oysterhead to be there. only 1 album and not exactly relevant.

I'm going to guess Titus Andronicus,
Lincoln could fit into the veteran part, and the Throne could be a statue, since you can't step down from that, since it's stone a crab could live there?

You just described Black Star, though. Haven't released anything since their debut in '98.

I actually kind of like this logic, but Magistrate means judge, not lawmaker
Edit: I also like Emoney's Tortoise logic though. Fuck.

A veteran and magistrate, or a character of sorts. A throne one cannot abdicate, of which a crab can make a fort.
Character Zero lyrics: "I was taught a month ago To bide my time and take it slow" -like a crab (slow)
"I ought to see the Man Mulcahey" - Father Mulcahey from M*A*S*H would be a veteran and, in the mode of who is sought after for counsel, a magistrate of sorts.
-from a website regarding the meaning of the lyrics to Character Zero:
The "king" idea might have some merit as I just saw this on the Phish website under letters from January 1997. Someone asked "Who is Mulcahy and why is he the man? Further, why do you ought to see him?" This was the response: "Mike Here. I don't know who he is; never really thought to wonder, but now I'll try to help anyway. Let's see...melech in Hebrew "means" king, clearly the etymology here. So I ought to see the King. Well, I guess I must be trying to see that majestic royal guy. Taking a gander at the old throned one...I might perhaps steal a peak at the crowned one."

Yay, clue 4!
I don't think I buy the idea of looking for a three-person band or anything like that. My initial thought was a two-word band name like someone else mentioned.
And I think the crab fort part is definitely referring to a seashell or something similar. A throne you can't abdicate that's got something to do with seashells?
I kinda like the logic of Prince not being able to abdicate his princehood because it's his name, except that I don't think it works in that specific example since he DID ditch the name for a while. But someone in a similar situation could be an option. There are plenty of people with royal names like that.

Please guys if you're gonna throw out answers at least give a reason. Thats why we had a list of 8 million acts for clue #1
Edit: that was in response to the Macca post
And I know they're playing, I was trying to say Natedogg was ruling put Oysterhead for only having one album and not having been around for awhile, but there is a confirmed act that fit the same exact criteria.

The Oysterhead guess doesn't really fit the clue. Veteran could mean any of the 3 band members, and I don't see how "Drummer = Stewart Copeland" means anything at all.
I'd love for them to be there but I think this clue is going in a different direction than Oysterhead. We need to think about the whole clue, or at least most of it (and let others fill in the parts we can't make connections to). Linking a band to one word or something like that isn't the best way to guess.
Ok, here goes my guess (with bearpawb's Prince reference):
-He's a veteran of music -There's a magistrate of Prince George County in Viriginia (still working on finding his name) -He went by a character/symbol for a few years, trying to "abdicate" his "throne", but obviously he couldn't because it's his name. Added- There's a prince crab -Wouldn't a crab make a fort in a (sand) castle?
I'm probably stretching a bit but it makes sense to me right now.

Tortoise is definitely a possibility. I think it's a decent fit for the second half of the clue, the only thing I'm hesitating about is that the first half of the clue seems like an awful lot just to get to a tortoise's long life span. How does the character of sorts fit in?
