Yeah, do we have any way to fit Prince in with the crab/seashell part of this? I'm especially unsure about the way that second sentence is constructed: "A throne one cannot abdicate, OF WHICH a crab can make a fort."
The crab makes his fort out of the unabdicatable throne. If the throne Prince can't abdicate is his name.....how does a crab make a fort out of a name?
So if "of sorts" has some specific meaning, maybe we're talking about a character who...sorts things? Or something like that.
I'm thinking it's Jack White somehow. He has been in the scene for a while now, some might even call him a legend. Veteran. He started playing instruments at an early age (maybe 6?) on the drums (throne)
He was an altar boy on his way to seminary school (magistrate) however, turned it down to play music and attend public school.
(Of sorts)he plays guitar, piano, drums, etc.
i think that's stretching too much. i don't agree that drums have anything to do with throne and not too sure about the connection to magistrate. i hope Jack is there but I don't think this is a clue for him

maybe some sort of jack white? he's definitely a veteran and now that he produces tons of records could be considered as a magistrate. and he has a throne of third man records, his studio in nashville. and since the white stripes are kind of really high up and his other bands kind of fall in the white stripes shadow, that also could be a throne that he can't abdicate. and he could be a character of a sorts since the white stripes have a very cartoonish kind of presentation, what with the candy stripes and red, black, and white color scheme. ill think of how crab and fort could tie into it though
I think you guys are focusing too much on "sorts". I think it was just a way to rhyme with forts and it was just meant to explain that it's a character.
We only started focusing on "of sorts" because Gary specifically told us to...
Yeah I wondered about that too. But his symbol wouldn't actually be a sort, as far as I know he made it up. It wouldn't be a character in any typeface.
holy hell...
taken from a transcript from his Oprah interview.
0{+> : Well, you do have a name for me. And the interesting thing about it is that some people think sometimes it's me trying to pull a power play or something like that.
OPRAH: Oh...
0{+> : I mean, you can type it on a type writer. I can give you the computer font.
OPRAH: Yeah. I've seen how you do it.
0{+> : And so...
OPRAH: We're going to show you right now on the screen how you do it on the typewriter.
You seem confident. #proveit RT @danyuleross: garychardonnay obviously cloo number 4 is les claypool
If this is true, it will be the first year I opt out of seeing Claypool for another. The last couple times Ive seen him (Asheville 10 and roo 10) there has been a lack of energy. Although, the visuals he employs always get better.
People need to read the thread before going of and posting the same ideas for the third time......
Agreed. I know these threads can get hard to keep up with, but right now this one is only four pages long AND fairly on-track compared to some of our others. If we have any hopes of it NOT getting utterly ridiculous, we really need people to at least ctrl+f their guesses or give the thread a 30-second skim or whatever.
A character made "of sorts" A symbol made of other symbols, possibly strange symbols
Oh good thinking, I was looking at that way of typing his symbol before and never even made the "character [made out] of sorts" connection. I like it.
I do wish we had a better crab connection though. I'm still hung up on the fact that the clue says the crab makes his fort out of the throne.
And...I hate to be the one to say it, but how do we feel about a big name like Prince being the answer to this? Is that plausible? (Especially since if it were we would have solved it in like...two pages?)

The only thing I can think in relation to Prince and the crab has to do with the fact that Prince still resides in Minneapolis, MN, where he was born.
In regards to a big name for a clue, last year we had DMB, Stevie and Jay-Z as clues.

Lincoln could fit into the veteran part, and the Throne could be a statue, since you can't step down from that, since it's stone a crab could live there?
I actually kind of like this logic, but Magistrate means judge, not lawmaker
Edit: I also like Emoney's Tortoise logic though. quack.
also Magistrate was highest of judge and could make laws in Romen Empire but in currenty common law is more of judge..
Also, not sure if this means anything but hermit crabs homes are often called castle's and sold as such when you buy them at pet stores.

plasticpepper is working on it as we speak. The clue is up already, I'm just working on the list of guesses because that always takes more time. Getting it up as fast as I can, though.

2. Of one kind or another: knew many folktales of sorts.
This is the one definition I would use to tie tortoises/turtles into the clue - They are characters in a bunch of different things (Aesop, various creation myths, yertle the turtle etc)
