I've heard speculation that The Kings Speech will triumph in the Best Picture category. However, I haven't seen it yet, so I decided I cannot really speak to that. In fact, I've only seen 5 of the films in question. Out of those I chose Black Swan.
I couldn't turn away from this art-house styled, deranged psycho-sexual thriller. Perhaps my mental health background draws me to grandiose, neurotic characters in film, but nevertheless, I was enchanted by the magic Natalie Portman wove on the screen. Her ability to dissociate from a delicate, introverted woman-child into the seductive, yet completely mad Black Swan, was phenomenal.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
I just saw The King's Speech this afternoon and it was just a lovely, lovely movie. Really gorgeous cinemetography and the subtle expressions from all the actors. I completely got caught up in it.

Pretty cool trent is nominated for best score.
Just one other thing, Scott pilgrim vs the universe should have gotten a nod for best original song. Beck wrote all their music, overseen by nigel godrich. All the other stuff on that list is shit
I voted for Social Network but it's been the frontrunner for about six months now -- it might've already peaked. My dark horse choice would be True Grit. I really liked that movie a lot more than I expected to.

Yeah I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the cinematography. I thought it was beautifully shot, lots of really close up interesting shots. I loved that. And yes, lovely film. Not my favorite of the year but certainly one of the best.

I also chose Black Swan, but your description of the movie is so dead on I thought I'd just quote you.

I ran to Red Box and picked up The Social Network so that I could throw tomatoes at or agree with if/when it is chosen. Viewing shall commence forthwith.

I've seen 8 out of 10 and my favorite was The Fighter. Christian Bale and Melissa Leo were amazing. And Amy Adams, with her flowing red hair, crawling across the bed in black bra and panties -- if she was acting sexy then she sure had me convinced.
I'm going with King's Speech. the one i personally want is 127 Hours, but it's chances are nil.
it's between Social Network and King's Speech. Although Social Network has had unanimous praise from critics, the critics are not voting members of the academy. King's Speech has won the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and Screen Actors Guild Ensemble. The Academy is pretty much made up of Guild members

Yeah, I think for the first time in a while its going to be a really good race. Either could take it. The last good race I can think of was Crash-Brokeback Mountain....

i think either True Grit or Social Network should win.....but The King's Speech will take the cake. That being said, I think Fincher will take the directing award. Please god, Natalie Portman SHOULD NOT win the Oscar. I am of the opinion that she was intentionally cast for her lack of talent...worked perfectly for the film, which was fantastic.

I'm surprised with the hype surrounding The Social Network after having watched it. I am of the opinion that the primary reason behind this is that people feel a sense of relevance in their own lives because Facebook has infiltrated our entire culture. I was unable to find anything else about this film that could possibly be riveting enough to warrant an Oscar nomination.

I chose Inception, though I haven't seen the King's Speech yet. Black Swan was beautiful in every way possible but the story line was quite lackluster, in my opinion. I think Inception was just a wonderful cinematic experience, all around. Genuine writing, precision acting, perfect directing execution. I'm a sucker for the overall experience.

Also, this! I was very impressed with this film in general, but Beck totally deserves something for the work put into it. "Garbage Truck" gets stuck in my head out of nowhere sometimes.

I was juggling the idea of Inception as well. While I found it intriguing and innovative, I don't like to have to work so hard for my mind f*ck.
I have an addiction to multi-tasking, and affording anymore than 80% attention to any one given task is too much to ask. And with this film, 80% allowed me to understand about 10% of what the hell was going on.
Thank god my 17 year old watched it with me and is a film analysis phenom. He was able to give me the synopsis of the whole film in 10 seconds afterwards.

See, though I am a sucker for the simplicity of genuine dysfunctional, psychologically imbalanced characters, I have to have a nice, hard plot mind fuck on top of that every once in a while. I just feel Inception is a beautiful creation.
I could have borrowed your 17 year old the first time around. Was definitely not in the mind set to be ready for all that, hahaha. I love leaving a theater completely lost, though. To me, that is what film is all about.

Art>Pop Culture IMO
i'm surprised by this. while The Social Network wasn't my favorite film of 2010 i do think it was most well-made. i've already written this in another thread (general film discussion) but it has the triple crown of great acting, amazing script, and stellar directing. the musical score adds a great deal as well. its cultural relevance is its strongest point, which makes it an "important" film.
king's speech is more of an academy film. so it makes sense that it'll win over social network. just like when How Green is My Valley beat Citizen Kane. when Kramer vs Kramer beat Apocalypse Now. when Dances with Wolves beat Goodfellas. when Forest Gump beat Pulp Fiction. when A Beautiful Mind beat Lord of the Rings. when Crash beat Brokeback Mountain. etc. etc. etc.
the feel-good film often beats the groundbreaking, unconventional smart film in the academy but not recently in the past 5 years, where the academy has been going along more-so with critics choices. last year is prime example when The Hurt Locker beat Avatar.
Best Picture: The Social Network Best Director: David Fincher (maybe Aronofsky, but I doubt it.) Best Actor: Collin Firth Best Actress: Anette Benning (should be Michelle Williams or Jennifer Lawrence, but it's likely to be either Benning or Portman) Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale (definitely) Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams (maybe Steinfeld) Animated Feature: Toy Story 3 Art Direction: The King's Speech Cinematography: True Grit Costume Design: The King's Speech Documentary Feature: Restrepo Editing: Black Swan Foreign Language: Biutiful ORIGINAL SCORE: TRENT REZNOR AND ATTICUS ROSS !!!!!!!! Original Song: Toy Story 3 Sound Editing: Inception Sound Mixing: Social Network Visual Effects: Inception Adapted Screenplay: The Social Network Original Screenplay: The King's Speech
This is my vote. NOT necessarily the way I think it will go.
Best Picture: The Social Network Best Director: David Fincher Best Actor: Colin Firth Best Actress: Natalie Portman Best Supporting Actor: Geoffrey Rush Best Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo

idk pondo i think black swan has kinda lost momentum since december. it'll only maybe win best actress and best art direction.
edit: Just realized Black Swan isnt even nominated for Art Direction. whoops.
everyone is predicting a King's Speech sweep. i think it'll definitely win Best Picture but i think there is a good chance that Fincher will win best director. Colin Firth will definitely get Best Actor. Best Supporting Actor is split between Rush and Bale and Supporting Actress is split between Leo and Steinfeld.
i'm actually most interested in Best Documentary this year. Even though Inside Job seems the obvious choice, i think Exit Through The Gift Shop and Restrepo are both equally deserving and important.
Actor: Colin Firth, The King's Speech --- Jeff Bridges, True Grit
Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, The Fighter --- Christian Bale, The Fighter
Actress: Annette Bening, The Kids Are Alright --- Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo, The Fighter --- Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
Director: David Fincher, The Social Network --- Christopher Nolan, Inception
Adapted Screenplay: The Social Network --- True Grit
Original Screenplay: The King's Speech --- Inception
By no means a definitive list, and admittedly some of my "will win" picks are mostly just wishful thinking. Plus there are a lot of movies I still haven't seen, so I need to get around to that (I've still only seen 4/10 best picture nominees).

my official picks " " - - my personal wishful picks ( )

again, everyone in the industry seems to think King's Speech will sweep this year. i definitely don't think it will, but i do think it'll take home two big prizes of Best Picture and Best Actor with some tech awards.
i really hope that annette bening does not win. i liked the kids are alright, but i didn't really feel like her role was oscar worthy. sometimes i think they are just desperate to plug in someone into the categories that is not in a typical drama.
it will be interesting indeed to see who they pick for everything.....
it will be interesting indeed to see who they pick for everything.....
indeed very interesting.
the obvious choice for best picture (to me anyway) is Social Network. but everyone seems to think the industry is backing King's Speech 100% because it is the typical feel-good heart-warming oscar flick.
A large portion of the Guild voters are in the academy, but i'm wondering if they tend to vote differently for different awards. (history does not indicate that they do so regularly) but last year's Hurt Locker win over Avatar shows that they occasionally side with Critics choices.
to me this really is one of the more interesting years.
Oscar tends to favor non-fictional characters overcoming adversity (My Left Foot, Schindler's List, Braveheart) so The King's Speech has more than a snowball's chance - but, using that same logic, so does 127 Hours. Still, I expect the Academy will bow to royalty over a one-armed American.
And I think Hailee Steinfeld could be Oscar's Arcade Fire - a longshot surprise who beats out the mainstream nominees. The Academy has a perennial hard-on for the Coen brothers (which I don't mind!), so I can see them giving the lass a nod while passing over the film for Best Picture.
