If you're going to post an answer, please try to explain how it fits the clue. Maudlin is defined as
1. tearfully or weakly emotional; foolishly sentimental: a maudlin story of a little orphan and her lost dog. 2. foolishly or mawkishly sentimental because of drunkenness.

well, pioneer can mean explorer. ferdinand was an explorer.
they were named because of archduke that was assassinated to start WW1 which could be a maudlin joke.
reaching, but thats all i got.
as for not one to plateau. i would take that as never leveling out or hitting a ceiling. could also be a play on numbers... like read as ---- not: 1 to plateau. just trying to hit it from every angle here. bounce ideas

i think the fool part is a stretch, but i know the song well so i gave it a wiki spin and came up with nothing really besides that the song was based loosely on maharishi mahesh yogi.
but hill could be right, which then makes you think of cypress hill. if i tried hard enough i could find a few different ways to make cypress fit the first part.

Ryan Adams-the maudville part fits (emotionally weak, foolishly sentimental), a pioneer in the alt country world. Not likely to (easy) plateau. Has a new album in the works, just released some old stuff (Cardinology III/IV

Joshua D. Brown (1816–1874) was a Texas pioneer who in the 1850s became the first settler of Kerrville, the seat of Kerr County in the Texas Hill Country west of San Antonio.[1] In 1856, Brown donated the original 4-acre (16,000 m2) townsite for Kerrivlle. He named the community for his fellow Kentucky native, James Kerr (1790–1850). He was married to the former Sarah Jane Goss of Gonzales, Texas. He made his living by harvesting shingles from cypress trees growing along the Guadalupe River. Brown owned 2,640 acres (10.7 km2) with frontage on the river.[1]

My guess is Daft Punk. One because I really hope thats what it is and two because A maudlin pioneer.. maudlin meaning foolishly as in "daft" and living in the fringe as in a "punk" a person who lives on the fringe. Not one to plateau, I would say they have never plateaued they are on a constant rise.

i like where the ryan adams answer is going.
it may seem to be a stretch to get him on the farm, but i wouldnt be surprised. he also hinted at getting back on stage soon in an interview i read about 8 months ago. heres hoping youre correct, and that mandy moore wont be there.

we all just need to hang on to this hope and will it to ourselves.

I thought of Ryan, too. That would be too awesome.
"Not one to plateau" could be talking about the music itself... meaning it's constantly building up. Maybe Dance music related or something very energetic and non-stop?

I'm liking that Daft Punk logic...btw
Yes yes, their music is constantly building, lets hope this is right and hopefully get some more feed back along these lines!

Maudlin (via the Oxford English Dictionary): Having reached the stage of drunkenness characterized by tearful sentimentality and effusive displays of affection; characteristic of (the behaviour of) someone who has reached this stage.
What a fucking great word. Working on actually doing something with it, now.

Do y'all think we could interpret "not one to plateau" differently?
Instead of like, someone being not wont to plateau, perhaps it could be referring to not making a huge leap? Like, 1 to plateau, as in, 1-max? Like a zero to 60 in 5 seconds kind of idea? Can we go anywhere with that?

I interpreted it as a geological plateau, so it's definitely possible to construe it in other ways.
