Sorry I keep disappearing over the weekends guys...hockey (my other love!) keeps me busy.
Anyway, I really doubt "not one to plateau" is just referring to the person's/band's career or music. Too simple. I'm thinking more like a band or person with a name involving mountains or hills or cliffs or something like that. I know a few people already thought of guesses that fit that, idk how well any of them fit the first half though.

My first thought was a mountain man, mainly because of the use of the word pioneer. Like Jeremiah Johnson or something.
3/24- The Greenhornes 3/31- Queens of the Stone Age performing Queens of the Stone Age. 4/27- Arcade Fire w/ The National 5/19- Primus 6/09-6/12- Bonnaroo! 6/13- Ray Lamontagne 7/04- Florence and the Machine with fireworks.

Black Mountain maybe?
There latest is called "Wilderness Heart". "Wilderness" and "pioneer" are certainly related. And the "Heart" could be a reference to sentimentality or a tendency to be maudlin. And the "Mountain" in the band's name certainly isn't a "plateau".
Ryan Adams? Maybe too obvious, but he has that song "Easy Plateau" and he's pretty maudlin in most of his stuff with or without the Cardinals. He just released more music w/ the Cardinals... maybe he'll take this as the time to re-emerge after "retiring". Personally, I would love it, but I'm not sure how much of a headliner he would be, and I'm not sure if the clues are strictly about headliners.

This is kind of out there, but Tom Cochrane?
He was in Red Rider when they put out "Lunatic Fringe." This pioneer stuff could be a reference to the fact that he is Canadian, or how he's in the Canadian Air Force, or maybe to the whole "Life Is A Highway" thing. Its a shot in the dark, but he still tours as far as I know...

I know we have no help from Mr. Chardonnay yet on this, but I was considering the possibility of the "plateau" part to refer to the concept of time. Or age. That is, if that part of the riddle is referring to the artist's name.
So something with a countryish tinge to it... The new Decemberists album is a little more country and a little less rock than everything else they've done, but I'm not sure I could connect them back to the clue...
Maudlin (via the Oxford English Dictionary): Having reached the stage of drunkenness characterized by tearful sentimentality and effusive displays of affection; characteristic of (the behaviour of) someone who has reached this stage.
The Ryan Adams logic could work, his old band was Whiskeytown and they had song titles such as Excuse Me While i Break My Own Heart and I Hope It Rains At My Funeral. He wouldn't plateau because he is constantly releasing material. Living on the fringe...hes talked about retiring from touring but with a new album out who knows
Usually the clues aren't answered correctly this quickly though so it is probably wrong
How about Morrissey... He could be considered a pioneer in the alt-rock... post punk genre... He's lyrics are fairly maudlin/meloncholy as well... In terms of the never being one to plateau..His popularity and creativity has never "plateaued" in a sense...
I don't think the plateau part is reference to anything as abstract as how creative they are or aren't, it's something more specific I'd guess. I also think the pioneer part is a reference to something specific too...I just don't know what.
My initial reaction to the word "maudlin" is an actor, maybe a band with an actor that once played a pioneer or something...30 Seconds To Mars or She & Him or something. Zooey Daschanel's new movie is called Your Highness...not one to plateau? or just do one thing, rather acting and music?
I'm thinking Lucinda Williams.. First of all, she is definitely a maudlin pioneer. Second, she's from Louisiana, which is very low land. Plateaus are generally high masses of land...
Maybe this clue is pointing to an animal. Living on the fringe could mean it's endangered or becoming extinct. One that comes to mind is the reindeer, aka Caribou. Caribou's definitely playing some festivals over the next few months, nothing scheduled yet for mid-June.
Morrisey! Certainly a maudlin pioneer, and he also recorded a song called "Late Night, Maudlin Street" I'm not sure about the fringe part. But he isn't one to plateau in that he has continually made albums since the Smiths.
I think it's Florence and the Machine - Florence is the maudlin pioneer Song: Hurricane Drunk. There was also copyright infringement for one of the songs on Lungs. And during a peformance at an outdoor festival in Australia, so many people crammed in to see them that it caused something to catch on fire which caught their equipment on fire. Australia's geography is named for it's plateaus, so maybe they're not one to go back there.
