It's been making the rounds on Facebook today. It doesn't impact me, but I wanted to give a heads up to anyone it applied to. Coffee County has a new DA whose Facebook includes the statement, "...allowing drug dealers and others to buy their way out of their charges just because it happened at Bonnaroo. WE DESERVE BETTER!!! Demand better by voting Craig Northcott as your next District Attorney." It looks like the citations for the police searches are a thing of the past.
wait, what are you saying? arrests instead of citations? forgive me, it's early and I haven't had my caffeine. nothing is making sense right now.
honestly...that was the way i read it, but what do i know

Wait, so, "demand better by voting Craigh Northbutt as your next District Attorney" means they don't have the new DA yet, correct?

Yes. Rather than the citations/fines that people have gotten in the past, patrons are held to the same standards as if you were any other person found with anything in Coffee County. Here's a page from a Nashville law firm about it. "In years prior, Coffee County had issued letters to individuals who received criminal or drug related citations while attending Bonnaroo. The letter explained that by essentially paying the court cost, the case would be dismissed after 1 year provided you stayed out of trouble. That policy received criticism from some that suggested it seemed inappropriate. As a result, District Attorney’s Office and Coffee County have elected to handle these citations the same as any other citation and not provide any different treatment to those who receive citations at Bonnaroo." nashvilleattorneynow.com/possession-citations-at-bonnaroo/

so i guess that leads to the question of "how do they normally treat these offenses in coffee country?" idk how much i'm allowed to say on here, but if you just have personal weed is that just a ticket there? guess idk, i got a ticket for weed like 5 years ago up here in MN, just a small personal amount and the ticket was like $125, so not a big deal. I know some states are not that way though

Ok. I read the stuff. But it doesn't say anything about making arrests, but instead, you MUST appear in court instead of just sending money like in years previous. Is everyone else reading that the same or am I still not getting it?

from that website.... "Possession of Marijuana over ½ an ounce for example can be charged as a felony, however unless it is a very large quantity, it is unlikely the officer will make an arrest if it is a Bonnaroo stop." but it doesn't have a date as to when this was updated??? So idk if this is old or new info!

Are we sure this isn't just a bunch of hullabaloo to scare people?
Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But Dave posted it, and Dave doesn't lie..... or does he?
I am assuming he is commenting more on the idea that the DA just spouted a bunch of get tough on the damn hippies crap in order to placate local residents and get elected with no intention of actually following through with it. Nobody can really know one way or the other on that right now. It's up to the individual to weigh out the risk and reward.

I am reading it the same as you. I love that they have the new information at the top with the old at the bottom saying that this doesn't apply to bonnaroo 2015. If it is just a scare tactic then it worked, I was freaking out last night and have decided that my guy can do the TN driving part.

He also credits "Him" for getting him elected. So I guess that means even the big man upstairs didn't like the old DA? I've never liked that sort of thing, since it implies favoritism, nor mixing politics with conservative christianity. In any case, be careful people, and don't bring it if ya don't need it. Edit: But of course his Bonnaroo mention was just before election day, when most would-be politicians are willing to say anything they think will sound good, whether they will be able to follow through on it or not.

I'm surprised it took this long for that approach to be favored. Every time I walk into a gas station bathroom or a dining area during the drive to/from roo, all I hear about is the freakshow and how locals just wish they could leave for those days every year. Those folks use what can best be described as colorful language, when lamenting to each other about that ill fated day when MTV bought the farm. The only time I hear any honest positive feedback, its from the service industry- whatever place we stop to grub at - excited about potential for increased tips.
That's funny, I've talked to several people from the area, and most of them just seemed interested in where we were form and what we thought of their area. And I distinctly remember one saying the sudden, albeit brief influx of business was very welcome. Surely some don't like the crazy traffic, but are we that bad? We spend and donate money, and we don't tear up the town like a biker gang in a 70's movie, no? I, for one, love TN and hope we get to keep going back, even if Manchester is far less than conveniently located for me. Behave yourselves, folks, and tip well when it is appropriate.
THIS might be a game changer at Roo--Now the cops aren't allowed to stop your car and hold you there long enough for a drug sniffing dog to be brought in...
And to add to that, always be respectful but refuse to consent to anything when asked. If you are given a warning or a ticket, and then a cop asks for consent to search bring in a dog or whatever, always say something like, "I'd like to get on my way as soon as possible, so I'd rather not do that. I won't stand in your way if you think it is necessary or prevent you from doing your job, but I don't consent to that." This applies whether you are ridin' clean or otherwise, or at your residence - make it clear that you are not a threat or an obstruction, but don't say "okay" to anything unnecessary. If it is unclear, it is always okay to ask if you are done there and free to go - just don't be a dick.
And to add to that, always be respectful but refuse to consent to anything when asked. - just don't be a dick This! Also don't drink or smoke corn in your car--wait 'til you get to roo. You got all weekend....Also I've heard don't advertise with "BONNAROO OR BUST" written all over your car.I even carry it a step further by not wearing Hippie-centric clothing until I get there. I learned this the hard way after wearing a tie-dye coming back from the Bahamas--I was literally boarding the plane and I got pulled out of the line and given a pretty intense search while my DH in his conservative clothes just stood there and laughed.

My understanding of this is unclear, but in the past I think some people were issued citations but then allowed to pay fines without returning to appear in court. This could mean that relatively minor citations (read: herbage) might now result in a greater likelihood of a required appearance at a later date, rather than an arrest on the scene. The new way could mean a conviction after a no-contest or guilty plea, by means of paying the fine and court costs, rather than the previous diversion program which did not result in a conviction. So a change would not necessarily mean they will be making a lot more arrests, just that they will not be dismissing cases based on paying up and not getting back into trouble. Seems murky, and I doubt they'll issue a press release to clarify this for our benefit, but it may not mean all the non-TN medical herb users (or whomever) are doomed.

That sounds spot-on to me. I'd expect them to stop some overly-obvious hippies, as usual, and maybe arrest a few. So if you don't want to get pulled over for being a clown, leave your rainbow wig, red nose, and clown car at home. Of course, don't break the law if you don't want to be hassled, but you are much less likely to be hassled the more normal the coppers think you look.

Our local festival here this weekend (riverfest) costs about 3 million to run and keep secure but it generates 33 million in business which is a lot for little rock. I read that in the newspaper yesterday so I think it's at least pretty legit. But if that happens here, I can only imagine how much money manchester and surrounding areas bring in. I understand being irritated by it, but business wise, it's once a year, 4 days, it's not the end of the world.

Agreed. I never understand some people's thinking when it comes to this. I went to Ohio University located in Athens, Ohio - the town literally would cease to exist if OU were gone. And yet the townies complain day in and day out about the rambunctious hooligans partying too hard all over their town. Granted, we partied a little too hard a few too many times. But we are the lifeblood, much like I assume Bonnaroo is to Manchester.

Planning on coming to roo early this year leaving Wednesday morning to get in line a couple hours or so before gates open, but I hear they put early birds' campsites around a 20-30 minute walk from CenterRoo. Was wondering if that's true so i know when to leave and get a decent campsite not to far from CenterRoo.

You never really know, man. It all depends on so many factors: when they actually open the gates, how long the lines are and how many people are there really early, which tollbooths you enter through, whether there are weather problems, and just how they decide to fill the grounds. If you are pretty early, then yes, there is a chance you get BFE/Pod 1. I was there once and didn't care for the walk, but some people love camping there, and it may be a tiny bit quieter. And you can be just as far away in Pod 10 or 11 anyway.
I say go whenever you want to go, and be determined to have a great time no matter what. Budget a few extra bucks for festie cabs if long walks get to you, just in case. We're not pulling your leg when we say there is no magic formula to determine where you will camp based on arrival time, unfortunately.
Personally, I'll probably try to get there early Wednesday evening. But that isn't because I know anything special - just because it means I can leave my house at a reasonable hour Wed. morning and hopefully get there and have camp set up before it gets dark.
So last year arriving at 9PM on Wednesday, for GA RV we somehow missed a turn coming in from the west on I-24. All the exits were closed and we had to go all the way down to exit 127. Which winds you back on Hillsboro highway and to the east toll both. Of course we get to the east toll both and are told we had to go around to the west since we were RV. There was a route marked and it lead us over to Ragsdale rd. and we were merged into the east line at Busy Branch. It wasn't that big of deal we were in the gate within 30 minutes of the detour but I would like to avoid that this year. I believe that I should have gotten back on I-24 going west at exit 127? This is for RV and Groop? Is there a better way?
When my groop arrived in Manchester last year we had the hardest time finding the actual grounds. They kept telling us to go down this one road and turn at a certain point, we never found it and kept getting lost in and back roads of Manchester for over an hour, it was miserable. We finally after what felt like an eternity, got directed the right way by some coppers. Are there any tips on avoiding this or a fool proof way to find an entrance because there were no signs and the volunteers weren't helping at all.
This same thing happened to us! We ended up in a caravan...After we went well past the grounds (per the GPS) i just turned around, but the rest of the cars just kept going...who knows how long they drove
Once you turned around how did you end up finding your way in?

Yes, you definitely should have gotten back on the interstate. I think they want RVs to go in the interstate toll booth, which is between exits 114 and 111. You guys probably missed that turn because you were coming in from the west, and the interstate toll booth is on the other side of the road, the westbound side of I24. Usually exit 114 should be open, so you could just get off, turn left to go over the interstate and then get right back on I24 heading westbound and the interstate toll booth line should be basically right there once you get back on (it's pretty hard to miss and will be in the right shoulder).
Sometimes though the cops will do weird things because they try to keep huge lines from piling up on the interstate. So they will sometimes temporarily close the exits, randomly re-route the lines, etc., which is probably what was the situation last year. If it happens again, definitely just go down to exit 127 and get right back on the interstate. In my experience (this year will be my 7th Roo), avoid those backroad detours as much as possible because they usually don't help you get to where you need to be and will add time on to your drive. Seems to me like the cops just do that in order to keep as many people as possible off the interstate, they don't seem real interested in actually helping people get to Roo.

Give enough people citations and we can all just come back and have a second Bonnaroo later this year. But for real, this is just posturing. They don't have enough resources to have hundreds if not thousands of people come through their court system.

Updated on the 'Roo website on the entry page:
"Once your vehicle is processed, you’re good to enter. Next, follow the parking staff’s directions to your camping area - camping locations are on a first come, first served basis. This means the earlier you enter, the closer you will camp to Centeroo and the Main Venue."
Does this mean the pod 1 quarantine is over? and if we arrive early Wednesday we WONT be put in BFE!?
