I couldn't care less if it's Crimson or not... at this point, I just want Robert Fripp. Bellew and the other boys of the post 80s lineups are fine, but... nothing touches the In The Court/Wake Of Poseiden and Red/Starless/Larks lineups and material.
Well, Robert Fripp is King Crimson. If Moogfest books Robert Fripp in any capacity, its probably going to be King Crimson and the last KC line-up was with all the people already booked at Moogfest and the drummer from Porcupine Tree.
The thing is, I wouldn't say there are necessarily headliners for this festival. Like you said, garageland, lineup placement will say very little about their timeslot and no act was unopposed last year. Not to mention that the start times for the biggest names changed each day--MGMT was 9:30-11 on Friday, Massive Attack was 11:15-12:45 on Saturday, and Pretty Lights was 10:30-12 on Sunday.
If there are official headliners for this fest, the line between non-headliner and headliner is pretty blurry.
Also, with the adds: I'd normally agree that they don't have another big name/headliner to announce. BUT, there are two things that lead me to believe there is still one headliner they're holding back: a)Capps saying this year's lineup is going to be bigger than last year's (so far, that's not the case); and b)tickets seemingly haven't been selling very well (there are still first tier tix available), but they don't seem too concerned about it. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes, but I haven't gotten any sense that they're worried about ticket sales, which could mean they're anticipating a spike in sales once they announce, say, Portishead. It's still possible that they could be just waiting for Portishead to announce a tour before announcing them for the fest.
Very solid logic. I also noticed that tickets haven't sold much, but you're very right when you say they don't seem worried AT ALL. Portishead would make sense. I really do like the whole no real headliner, no unopposed acts thing. It's really a unique festival in many ways.
Also, repeating 1 or 2 bands out of 60 really isn't a huge deal. It's not like they're repeating the same headliner every year (I'm looking at you WSP). In all seriousness, I'm happy to see Dan Deacon back- he puts on a fun show.

Plus, in regards to the Dan Deacon thing--last year, it was Dan solo. This year, it's the Dan Deacon Ensemble (via his artist profile on the Moog website). They're really two VERY different experiences.
His solo show is a lot sillier and he interacts with the audience a lot more, whereas an Ensemble show is a little fuller and more straightforward (but still a little goofy).

wha..wha..WHAT?!? GAVIN HARRISON?!? ohdearlord, he is my favorite drummer ever!!! if he shows up @ Moogfest, somebody will have to get paddles to resuscitate my non-beating-from-overexcitement heart.
I know he most recently worked w/Fripp on "The Scarcity of Miracles" but what are the chances that he might actually show up in October???
on a related note, I cannot.stop.listening. to this song!!!

i wouldn't count on fripp being there. he doesn't want to tour anymore. also the double trio tour already has 2 drummers, so you shouldn't expect harrison to be there.
Fripp being a virtuoso of improvising with time delay, maybe he could telecast performances from England to accompany the live performers in Asheville, incorporating the inevitable time lags and glitches in transmission into compositions.

Saw Fripp perform solo Frippertronics in D.C. many years ago. He'd build layers of sound using tape loops, 'til it sounded like a rich symphony. Occasionally, he'd put his guitar down while the loops continued to play and slowly evolve, then walk out into the audience to listen from our position. Then, he'd walk back onto the stage, pick up his guitar and add washes to the landscape of sound. He began the show with a short lecture, something about overcoming the inherent "vampiric" relationship between performer and listener.

I think I'm gonna try to go to this this year... I'm just a little weary because I really like camping and having festival grounds, but there are a ton of good reviews and the line up looks sweet so I should probably check it out.
Thanks, if they throw Animal Collective into this mix, I'm sold. I have been keeping my eyes on both this and Voodoo but, so far, Moog has done a much better job of keeping things interesting. All of the excitement has been sucked out of Voodoo until they release the full lineup.
I wish there was a shuttle from the campgrounds to the city.
That would be a good idea. I usually enjoy camping festivals more in general, but Asheville is a crazy enough place in general that this works well. What campsite are you using? I was planning on camping this year until a buddy of mine ended up moving to Asheville a few months ago and offered up his couch.
I also second Animal Collective showing up. They'll be there at some point. Panda Bear was there last year. I missed the show for something else because I was really drunk, and that show is not something you see while drunk. Generally city festivals are more of alcohol festivals as opposed to camping festies, but this one had a pretty good mix last year. The drunk people went to the party shows (Sleigh Bells, Girl Talk, Big Boi, etc.), and the shows where belligerent screaming people detract were actually pretty devoid of that. I thought the festival, despite it's few bumps like the floor where I was standing almost collapsing Sunday night, went over more smoothly than some other city festivals I've been to. Not to hate on Lolla, but I liked Moog a lot more- ignoring lineup variations, if that makes sense. I guess I mean the atmosphere in general.
