Can someone explain to me what the deal is with them playing "Niggas in Paris" multiple times at shows? I just read that they played it 10 times at a show.....is it literally them repeating the song over and over again? Or just some verses? I don't get it.

that's funny. the only track I like on WTT is "no church in the wild", but I really really like that track. I'm going to keep listening to the rest of the album in the hopes it grows on me.
the tour came through NOLA earlier this month but we caught Judas Priest that night instead. Priest was outstanding.

No it's just the same song X amount of times in a row. I got sick of it after the 3rd time in Pittsburgh. It's a fun song so to see live but anything in excess of 4 is just overkill, imo

Yea that seems like a bit much, after 2 or 3 times I would probably start to get annoyed. Not that I don't like the song, and I get the point of hyping the crowd up or whatever. But there are easily 10 songs between the two of them that I would rather hear, that would do a pretty good job of riling up the audience.
Chances are they already played those ten songs, though. I think that's the thing about it. By the time they do the Niggas In Paris-a-thon, they have already busted out 30-40 monster songs.

Yeah I kept waiting for 'Encore' I was surprised Jay didn't play it. If I knew they weren't playing that I would have left after the third Niggas in Paris

I was at the very first show of the tour in Atlanta, and I will say that it really felt like a lot of the show was being improvised, which was really cool. And about 2/3 of the way through Niggas in Paris, Jay just goes "WHOA WHOA WHOA STOP THE TRACK!" and the music cuts and Kanye looked confused, and then he was like, I like that shit....START IT OVER!
And as awesome as it had been live already, it was literally 100x better the second time. The energry escalted to such a crazy level, the crowd was insane, everyone jumping around a losing their minds.
I had friends who went to the second night in Atlanta, and they told us they got it three times, and we were so jealous. Then we heard they played it 4 or 5 times in Charlotte or somewhere, so we started watching on setlist.fm just to see how rididculous it would get. I know someone else who saw the New York show where they played it 8 times, then we saw they did it 10 times in Chicago. If they're doing it the same way as in Atlanta then they stop it before the breakdown of "Don't let me into my zone".
I've tried to explain it to people who didn't see it, but they're always like, "Why would you want to see it multiple times?" But for some reason it just works. I think at this point not even Kanye and Jay understand it, but they just keep going more and more to see how much it will work. I am so jealous of the people seeing it 10 times, because I can't even begin to fathom that energy level, but at least I was there at the start!

See for me the energy level rose for sure the 2nd and 3rd time (2nd was the craziest one), but each time after that it seemed the crowd got less and less into it. It was almost dead the 5th time, I couldn't imagine ten. Maybe Pittsburgh is just a weak crowd, IDK. I was over with it after 3 though

Haha I've thought the same thing. It's definitely a Jam-esque technique they've discovered and utilized. Jam acts certainly know how to manipulate and feed audience energy, and it's no surprise that Jay and Kanye are using similar tactics to accomplish the same thing.
For the record, I'm sure this was great live. I like what they did the first two times through. The second time around they go through the whole track and Kanye gets to pay respect to Chi-town. I'd even be down to hear that song three more times after that homage. Honestly though after that I think I'd get bored, I would want Encore or something along those lines.

Yes, because nobody in the music industry except for jambands knows anything about putting on an engaging live performance.
What a lawyer-y response. I have to deal with that all the time being in the pre-Law field. I'm not even a fan of the Jam scene. The only Jam band I've ever seen was Umphrey's at Bonnaroo. I'm just saying that Jam acts often use this technique of repeating the same song throughout the set and adapting the setlist to manipulate crowd energy. Jay-Z and Kanye are doing the same on this tour, and it's no surprise that it's working for them as well as it does for Jam acts considering how strong of live performers they (particularly Jay) both are.
So, judging by the fact that I said Jay and Kanye are capable of putting on an engaging live show, and neither of them are often classified as Jam, it seems like your summation of my post as "only jambands have engaging live performances" is completely inaccurate.

IDK where you were in Pittsburgh but it definitely got more and more amped each time where I was
So I'm thinking Watch the Throne is a necessary booking at this point. I'm super excited to see Dr Dre and Radiohead, but I'm not to thrilled to see Chili Peppers and Phish (I understand Phish is also necessary and I'll be at their set in support).
Roo has to do something of that magnitude to really weigh up in my opinion. I'm sure Jay and Kanye (get over it) are fully available and able to be booked/have been booked. Just a thought.
But then again, I trust the powers that be. They'll deliver something just as exciting I'm sure, something I hadn't even thought of yet probably.

This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I've already seen The Throne show plus Jay-Z's set in 2010 so I'd definitely rather have Dre and Snoop. Even if I hadn't seen their shows already I think I'd take Dre and Snoop though, you just don't get to see Dr. Dre live
