I'm def spoiled after doing VIP this year. Next year's lineup will probably be way better, and VIP won't be as cheap. I'm just gonna hold out again and try to buy em' cheap again.... $200 was an unreal price, I drank at least $400 worth of festival booze.
I actually thought Dr Dog sounded great on the Letting Go stage, but I was close. I was further back for Delta Spirit and it did sound a little thinner.
I was up front for Dr. Dog and I kept backing up and just couldn't find a spot that they sounded good from. I do love that band though. They sounded great last time they came to Nashville.
This was my second time there. Here's some thoughts:
It's possible that there were some shenigans that allowed me access to the Media and VIP areas so that made the weekend even more enjoyable. Thought the huge size of the VIP area on the main stage was BS though.
Really enjoyed Flaming Lips, Jack White, Gogol Bordello, Randy Newman, Steve Winwood, and Mavis Staples
Didn't enjoy the RHCP too much. Anthony should at least pretend that he wants to be there.
The logistics were dramatically improved this year. I would recommend using their vastly improved and fast shuttle system.
Amazing time. As everyone else has been saying, Jack White was a top 5 show of my life. So much energy, and exceeded all expectations. Loved seeing Cheese and Dispatch on the beach. RHCP were good, but they were definitely more into their set in Georgia. First time seeing Gary Clark Jr, and I got my face melted. The stages all seemed to have better sound than last year. The areas were a lot larger. Security seemed more chill, never checked our pockets once. Even better than 2011, and I didn't think that was possible.
I'm hoping more tapes show up....seein stuff like Alabama Shakes and Futurebirds but no Steve Winwood or Gogol Bordello..... "ALABAMA!! BREAK THE FUCKING SPELL!!!"

I joked with my crew that attendees to the Hangout should have to bring a ticket stub from a major camping fest just to be able to attend. The difference in the Farm and the Hangout is the difference in Motel 6 and the Ritz. The condo, restaurants and the beach overcome even a mediocre lineup. It's a beach vacation with a music festival going on and it's hard to beat. Everyday began with a recap and laughs on the balcony....Then we would go for a big breakfast (in an air conditioned establishment!). Grab the cooler and chairs and head down to the beach....go see some shows....come back and make some drinks and cool off in the pool....head back for more shows....and then enjoy late night beach parties. I just hope the promoters continue to go for the best possible lineup.
All the improvements were great and my favorite was the tents over the port-o-lets. That had to save 30 degrees in those things. On the beer prices....they suck, but it is really $3.50/beer given that they're 24ounces.

Friday: Best day. Jack White was life-changing. Cornell only proved to me more that he is a gawd. The Third Man Rolling Record Store was awesome! And those guys were so nice. Sleeper Agent was great.
Saturday: Pretty good. RHCP was a little disappointing. AK was just trying to get it over with. Flea and Chad Smith seemed to be having a ball though. And from where I was standing, Klinghoffer's guitar wasn't very loud. Flogging Molly was a little disappointing too,but still fun. Gogol Bordello blew my mind.
Sunday: Yuck. FLips were really good,but I was disappointed with the sound at the Letting Go stage for Cage the Elephant (who was really the only band I cared to see on that day anyway), YtG was okay, Delta Spirit was alright. I was just really bummed, and I was really tired; lack of sleep may have contributed. Did not see DMB, and from what I heard it was not very good.
Don't know if I'll do Hangout next year. It's gotta be one of those "Pick up the super early-bird tix or wait until after the lineup comes out" deals for me.
Yeah, I saw the ZZ Top and 3DD sign too. A friend and I went to that Black Tusk & Municipal Waste show at VMH.
Very nice, I've missed out on the whole metal mania week @ the Vinyl, wanted to go catch Down, but needless to say that I didn't make it...
Down was awesome. Light crowd but that was a good thing, IMO...esp after how crowded and unbearable the GWAR show was. It was my third time seeing Down, and the best one yet. No front man works the crowd like Phil. Unfortunately a friend of mine fell down in the pit and broke his arm...OUCH.
I didn't make the Municipal Waste show...spent way too much at the Down show to justify it. Will be there tonight for the Don Jamieson metal/comedy show though.
It sounds like the fest this year was incredible. I really wanted to watch the live stream but was on a bunk internet connection. Thanks for the writeup, silk. An honest question: are you ever bothered by having to lug your kids around to shows and have them dictate your entire day? The way you described your weekend sounds like a nightmare to me, but glad you had fun. I don't have any kids and just wonder how parents at a festival manage it and still enjoy themselves.
This is one of those things that's hard to explain if you don't have kids. Once you have kids, you'll realize that your universe revolves around them. They are going to dictate your day, whether you are at home or at the festival. And taking the kids to the festival beats the alternative of skipping the festival, which would have been the case this year, because my parents were out of town and my wife's parents live on the west coast.
Having said that, I've only taken my kids to the Hangout Festival and DeLuna Fest, both of which are on the beach. Kids entertain themselves on the beach. We bring bubbles and sand toys. And every year so far, we've gotten free beach balls that the kids love to play with. Last year, at DeLuna, they sold light-up toys that the kids went apeshit over (and they have the added advantage of making the kids easy to spot when the sun goes down). We looked for light-up toys at the Hangout this year, but they just weren't there.
The main key to having fun with your kids at the festival is not to set your expectations too high and be willing to go with the flow. With the younger kids like mine, don't plan on getting too close. You can hear just fine toward the back, where the kids have more space to play. Try not to use the "No" word, because nothing causes a tantrum quicker than being told "No." Once you have kids, you'll have a good feel for your children's limits. For instance, we knew we probably would not get to see Jack White/RHCP/DMB because we were skipping naps and staying up way past bedtime. I also knew that we probably wouldn't see a lot of acts that weren't on the beach. It's doable though. The key is to plan meals/snacks around those. Even kids understand that sand in food sucks. When the kids and I went to see Umprhey's, we got ice cream on the way.
It also helps to have a cool wife like mine. She's a real trooper and while she does enjoy live music, festivals were never really her scene, until she met me. The two of us tag team the kids and help each other. For instance, I'd take both kids with me and let her unwind in the hammocks. And she'd let me wander off by myself to see what I wanted to see.
Last year, my wife did not want to go to the Hangout. But she did come to the condo and they all played at the beach and the pool while I went to the fest. We were at the Caribe. It has waterslides at its pools and they loved that. I ended up taking my son on the last day of the 2011 festival and my daughter was heartbroken that she could not go. I couldn't break her heart twice.

Sadly the life of this funky momma appears to have been cut short. During her time with Phish she showed her never-ending stamina, her sizzling raunch, her breathtaking peaks, and put the fun back in funk. In the dance, her spirit lives on. To know “Katy” is to love her.

Can't get into DOWN at all!! The crowd is pretty f'n bad. Last time I saw them I drove to ATL to see The Melvins who were opening for Down, and the crowd was so shitty towards the Melvins. It was weak! I left Down after 15 minutes the crowd there was so bad and I've been to crust punk shows and really hardcore stuff. I should have gone to Depeche Mode at Lakewood that night!!! WTF was I thinking!? The only band's crowd I can compare Down to is Crowbar. Saw them at Metalliance in NOLA last year and that singer was chugging O'Douls on stage. I was laughing so hard. They were total joke playing after the mighty ST.VITUS!!!!
Feel for ya about GWAR bein' crowded. Seen em like 6x. Bonnaroo late night GWAR was a let down. Could not get in there and no one was raging it at all. I figured GWAR super late night Roo would be epic but it was a bunch of pussies standing around. If Roo ever did a Butthole Surfers late night I would lose my mind
The only band's crowd I can compare Down to is Crowbar.
Not too far fetched seeing as one of Down's guitar players and bass player are the lead singer and bass players for Crowbar. Pretty much the same crowd for their shows.
I have been a huge down fan for a long time. I may be a little biased and able to overlook stuff like that because I love their music so much. I had fun.
