If jam music were all improvisational, it wouldn't all sound like the same band playing the same song for three hours straight at every show. Yes, I'll kindly shut up and stand in a corner now.
your ears just aren't cultured enough to jamband, sometimes trey uses that pedal that makes the crunchy tone, sometimes he uses a pedal that makes it go like pew pew in a loop. very different.

My big thing is I bet all of the shows end up running around the same time. So how can it be totally improvised? They just know exactly how much to jam every song?

You have never played a musical instrument before, have you?

I was in band in 8th grade.
Did you play outside of the band, for funsies? What instrument did you play?
When you play and aren't practicing and just seeing where the notes take you it's pretty magical. And when you play with others for as long as they have played together there is this weird unspoken thing that happens. Plus, they do speak to each other also and make eye contact so they can stay on the same page.

No I never really played an instrument. I wasn’t good at being told exactly what to play, I just wanted to bang on the drum. I ended up putting a hole in the snare.

Well being in the band was your first mistake if you didn't want to be told exactly what to play. You know you could have learned on your own, then maybe you would understand jam.

Little known secret: Phish shows are prerecorded, they're just acting. They used to play for real when they were cool and when cool people went to go see them, and a few jam bands still do, but jam music is all AI and studio recordings now. That's why it takes drugs to have fun there.

Nah, no one really understands it, they just pretend.

That's why jam fans always compare it to jazz, which no one actually understands either.

eh, music major chiming in (albeit, it was from the 90s), but in any given jam there are enough rules to limit improv to make it pretty easy to jam within a set key and mode (basically limiting to 7 natural notes plus octaves unless you want to throw in pentatonics) and time signatures. throw in the chord progression of any given jam and there's clearly the set intervals (3s, 4s, 5s, and maybe flat 7s and 1/8 in most major keys) that are just natural to hit at certain points in any jam. the rules follow pretty much any modes which seems to be dorian, phyrgian, aeolian, and locrian for most phish tunes based on google.
Had a parent/kid play day cocktail dinner thing with a couple who has kids in school with ours. As we were leaving the husband tells us he's really getting into Rush. My wife really likes Rush from her childhood. So we got home and get high and listen to rush in bed. When YYZ comes on and she immediately skips it "sounds like umphreys, dick energy"

whats y'all's hair washing regiment? i'm doing an experiment and haven't washed my hair in a month. it's been pretty great, in the morning when i blow dry it stands up on it's own no problem, no itchiness, and i have way less dandruff than before. before i figured any day pusha t was gunna make an album about my scalp.
i rinse it thoroughly every night and every morning but no soap or shampoo.

2-3 times a week! I don't ever get it wet between washes though.

I haven't washed my hair in 9 years. The first couple weeks of the experiment my hair was greasy as hell, but it's been healthy, dandruff- and grease-free the entire time. I highly recommend keeping it up.
Shampoo is unnecessary, just let your hair be your hair and let your body do its thing.

I condition every day and use shampoo every third day.
I have heard/read all the "shampoo is unnecessary" stuff, but I actually get dandruff if I *don't* use it. Head & Shoulders FTW.
