yeah i mean there is no doubt that the lineups aren't as good as they used to be.
2013 top three lines:
Paul McCartney - Mumford & Sons - Tom Petty - Bjork - Wilco - Pretty Lights R. Kelly - Wu-Tang Clan - Daniel Tosh - The National - The Lumineers - David Byrne & St. Vincent Passion Pit - The XX - Kendrick Lamar - Grizzly Bear - Animal Collective - Of Monsters and Men
OK, breaking this down, Paul McCartney is massive. Mumford & Sons was hot shit at the time (even if i wasn't excited at the time, and wasn't this the lineup where Jack Johnson replaced them anyway?), and Tom Petty was playing frequently but still a rad booking. Wilco is a roo classic, Pretty Lights was about to become a roo classic, and Bjork is the type of off-kilter booking you never see at bonnaroo anymore. R. Kelly was the type of fun non-roo booking they used to do and he wasn't in prison yet, Wu-Tang Clan rules, The National rules, David Byrne & St. Vincent rule and was a limited-time type of engagement. The Lumineers are what they are but people love them, and they are a smart pairing with Mumford. Passion Pit was hot at the time and a big fun poppy booking. The XX is ultimate sleepy band but critically acclaimed and people love them. Kendrick wasn't full on Kendrick yet but was an up and coming phenom. Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective were both big indie names. I don't know what Of Monsters and Men is.
Below the top three you had Nas, ZZ Top (below the top three! two bona fide legends), Beach House (indie darling), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (big single energy), Cat Power, A$AP Rocky, Jim James, Weird Al!, Tame Impala (who again weren't Currents Tame Impala yet but Lonerism was the biggest thing to come out of the burgeoning neo-psychrock scene at the time), Billy Idol, Dwight Yoakam, John McLaughlin.
And honestly I don't want to list anymore. Just wild that even in the dead middle of the lineup poster there are still legends and true hot new shit one after another.
IMO, it’s kinda hard to accurately judge old lineups after about 30-40 names because those names are generally not big or well known at the time. I’ve seen people look back at Thursday Roo lineups and say “that was stacked” but 95% of the time it wasn’t stacked in the moment. It’s just some of those Thursday acts eventually get bigger and more well-known and make those lineups more impressive in retrospect.
Also, I think roo’s sweet spot was somewhere from 2007-2014. I attended from 11-14 and the lineup noticeably dropped in 2015 then went off the deep end in 2016.
absolutely, but i was intentionally trying not to fall into that trap in my analysis above. like wu-tang, the national, david byrne & st. vincent, grizzly bear, animal collective, zz top, weird al, billy idol, dwight yoakam, and john mclaughlin haven't gotten any bigger since then, because they were already pretty big back then! thats a lot of high quality names in their respective genres whether it's 2013 or 2023.
i noted tame impala and kendrick weren't as big a deal as they are today. still credit is due for smartly booking future big deals.
Mostly with past Primaveras. Make me wish I'd been born a decade earlier.
Primavera 2022 is gonna be the one people look at in a decade and wish they were able to go to. best, festival lineup ive ever had the pleasure of experiencing and its not even close.
Lolla 2008, Bonnaroo 2014, FYF 17, Panorama 17, Pemberton 2014, and Fuji Rock 17 are the biggest ones for me that i wish i could have seen
Do people actually like being told they look like a certain celebrity? I've been getting Seth Rogen for a decade and it got old by year 2
For a few years I kept getting Ed Sheeran and felt horrified. Always made my day worse when I heard that lolz. Especially when it was from people who liked his music. I'd have to pretend I either hadn't heard it or thought it was okay. Thankfully haven't got the ol' Ed comparison in a while.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

People are always telling me I look like Henry Cavill, and while they're not wrong about the resemblance, I always get really pissed and scream at them "No, Dude. Actually, Henry Cavill looks like ME!"
If I ever meet Henry he is toast for copying my look.

We’re having some work done on the house today. Just knowing that there are people outside makes me tired.
I have ten minutes left in my workday, 5% left on my phone battery, and about 2% left in my human battery.
Hugs.
Thank you! They left right around the time that I was getting off of work, so I took a walk and then worked on my puzzle some, and now I’m feeling much better!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I woke up to thejeremy texting me. I ignored the first text, then he texted again. I get my phone and squint to read without my glasses to see there is some sort of outage, so I respond with TEST. That was NOT the response he was wanting. LOL
Daytime TV update: I’ve been working with a guy whose TV has been showing a lot of reruns of In the Heat of the Night, a cop procedural TV show that ran for four seasons from 1988-92 based on the 1967 movie. I had no idea this existed and it seems like a weird concept even now, so obviously I had to think of what the 2024 equivalent of that would be and I think it’d be if there was a hit TV show today based on Mystic River.

How have you never heard of this show before? That’s a classic.

Honestly I just don’t think it’s syndicated super widely! When there’s cop procedurals on TV that I see it’s usually much more recent Law & Order or Chicago PD shows; the channels that show older shows if they show cop shows usually tend to show a shitload of Murder She Wrote and Matlock.
Absolutely, Blue Bloods is an Ion staple. (I can also tolerate or enjoy a lot of cop shows but it is by far the fucking worst, and that’s before sleazeball Tom Selleck’s reverse mortgage commercials. Awful awful enterprise.)

I was gonna say - from what little I've seen of it, it's terrible

Is there a thread for "Fuck that made me feel ancient"?
I had a coworker who was born in 2000 and she told me last night she discovered this old indie song that's totally underrated. I think she said something like "it totally takes you to a different era". It was the Ting Ting's "Great DJ".
