These "protesters" are causing far more eye-rolling than eye-opening. They're just pissing people off. No one leaves thinking about the message. The result is a lot of people writing off protesters in general

Batty called 911 last night because of a smoking outlet. There was a huge 2 alarm fire a few blocks away from us last week that was electrical (everyone got out safe), so the firefighters were on high alert. Thankfully, they found absolutely nothing of concern. Checked every inch of the building.
Also found out that she went over our landlord’s head and had an inspector come on the property to check for mold. Mold was found in the basement. Fortunately, the inspector said it’s very minimal and easily mitigated. So our landlord is very happily taking care of that. He is VERY pissed off that she did this all behind his back though. I can’t say I blame him.
Anyway, he’s told her that this doesn’t seem to be a very good fit for her and he’ll return her deposit in full if she finds a new living arrangement. She said that she’s already been looking so fingers crossed yall!
Can’t say I’d ever have expected Macon to show up on a list like this.
There’s more than a few head scratchers but I liked Macon, honestly. It’s definitely not some place I’d ever want to live but was nice for a few days.
It just seems like kind of a boring place to visit. If it wasn’t for the weather/humidity, I really wouldn’t mind living here. I just dropped a bunch of money to have our crawlspace encapsulated, though, so I’m particularly annoyed by the humidity right now.
Ultimately, we’d like to move back to Knoxville, but it seems like it is becoming increasingly unaffordable.
I can't speak to Richmond, since I've only driven through there. Portland is def a fun town though.
Providence, and RI in general, though - for a little state, there's a lot going on. I've been out here 9 years now, and feel like I've only scratched the surface on cool stuff to check out.
I did some laundry earlier today, and decided to throw my rain coat in there cause it had been a while. The hood partially ripped off and left some white residue on the whole wash. Not thrilled about that.
So esteban brought up an interesting topic in the bonnaroo survivor thread of judging music and performances moreso based on technological skill than simply on how it sounds. with that in mind, i saw this on twitter and wanted to ask a related question for a general discussion in this thread. do you consider this clip to be an example of a good performance? personally, i recognize the technological skill and effort to play this, but it just isnt remotely enjoyable or pleasurable to listen to imo. To quote a quote tweet: “ The problem with locking yourself in your bedroom with your guitar, as a kid, is that you have all the techniques at your disposal, but you missed out on the formative stuff that makes you feel.

They just sound like they're playing exercises.”
Skill level matters as does technical proficiency. But I look for some emotion in that music too. Howe, Gilmour, Holdsworth, Hackett, Goodsall and Fripp immediately come to mind.
I think that tweet is misapplied to Vai and Satriani if not the quoted leads. Both Vai and Satriani are great musicians. I think Vai played some incredible shit even when he was super young (Zappa era). I get where it’s coming from for modern guys like Marcin or Matteo Mancuso who are two of the greatest bedroom guitarist there are. Ichika Nito as well. But if something isn’t going to move my ass, I’d like it to move my brain cells. I grew up with a bunch of musicians so I was indoctrinated pretty early into more complicated and arranged pieces to the point that radio pop or rock usually wasn’t sufficient to scratch that proverbial itch except more folkier or acoustic stuff that I still enjoyed. Shit doesn’t need to be overly technical but it helps. Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders) comes to mind there. Certainly Tim Henson and Scott LePage (Polyphia). But they managed to bring in trap, hip hop, metal and pop while stretching boundaries with the guitar. Some early Polyphia has those bedroom elements. But how they progressed in 10 years to what they are now as a band and individual musicians kind of proves to me that it’s tough to pigeonhole guitarists even though people are naturally looking to categorize and subset shit. That’s just my take on it.
But yeah, I’m naturally drawn to jazz and higher level music. So I’m going to try to seek out what I find most interesting at a festival. I’ll find some stuff that I want to sing along or rap along to as well. But give me some Herbie Hancock or Cory Henry or Makaya McCraven so I can have some of my fill of that too. It doesn’t even have to be complicated if it’s on a higher plane. Jacob Collier got my top show last year and so far this year also. It’s not that anything is particularly technical outside of the vocal harmonies. But it’s not canned bullshit and can find its way to my head and heart.
If you dislike Georgia so much then don't be hanging around the middle of the damn state needing gas to get out, goofy!
ALSO!
"Baby hair with a woman's eyes" is such a weird fucking line. What are doing here Daryl Hall?
Haha, I'm just mad we keep losing to the bulldogs. Maybe we get yall next decade.
Fair. Don't take that as me defending Macon. I haven't been there on purpose since like 2002 and I blew a radiator hose after like 10 minutes in the city limits.

Guys like Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, throw in Yngwie, Buckethead, and whomever, are amazing guitarists. For me personally though, their music is pretty much all boring. What you like is a very personal thing, and I'd much rather listen to Billy Gibbons, Vernon Reid, Mike Campbell, or Mike McCready, even if their technical abilities aren't on the same level.
Sometimes my own tastes don't even make sense to me. For example, sticking with guitar players, no one can explain to me why I don't like Joe Bonamassa. I like blues rock, his song selections, his heavy use of solos and ability to stay on rhythm, and even his voice, but altogether his music just doesn't appeal to me after one or two songs.
It's hard to pin down the why's and wherefores but musical taste is just naturally difficult to explain in any objective or quantifiable way. Some things just speak to us with a certain edge, while others seem soulless. This might be a reach, but one could draw a similar distinction with cars. In the 90s, an all wheel drive Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 was considered an easy car to drive very fast because it delivered a ton of power and had a lot of technology to help you out. Most people said a less powerful, RWD Mazda RX-7 (like the old Datsun Z cars) was more fun and engaging to drive though because it had a certain soul. Or pit a Tesla Model S against a Miata or Toyota 86. The Tesla will smoke the others, especially in a drag race, but a nimble little RWD car is way more fun if you turn the steering wheel and have to use all four limbs.
I've seen Buckethead up close, and he melted half my face (it got better). But I always enjoyed seeing Dan Auerbach much more, even if he isn't half as fast. It's definitely fair to draw a distinction between what constitutes great skill and what is an enjoyable performance.

I wish I weren't inclined to believe that a minority of aforementioned protesters neglect to vote consistently in primary and any other election not held on November 5th, with even fewer having never taken 30 mins to call/write their elected representatives to convey their opinion on the issue they've spend a significant amount of time protesting outside of (insert state/local govt building or college campus) that realistically has zero legislative authority to affect change on said issue.
I mean regardless of effectiveness of tactics the bigger problem with Just Stop Oil is their ideology is kinda incoherent since they were also notably opposed to the HS2 high speed railway in the UK.

Sure, not even commenting on the ideology here. It's just neo-lib nonsense to broadly write off protesters as non-voters who don't know how to meaningfully participate in our democracy.

They probably want scooters powered by their own smugness
Seriously, fuck this guy. A woman’s value is only measured by if she is married and has children.
Such is the opinion of John Mac Ghlionn: a man nobody has ever heard of. In a recent op-ed for Newsweek, Ghlionn argued that Swift is a terrible role model for women because “at 34, Swift remains unmarried and childless … While Swift’s musical talent and business acumen are certainly admirable, even laudable, we must ask if her personal life choices are ones we want our sisters and daughters to emulate.”.
Hell yeah I’d like my sister to emulate her. Don’t have a daughter because I’m a worthless woman who chose not to have children.
Fuck off John Mac Ghlionn and anyone else that believes this shit.

this guy looks like he has absolutely never gotten laid in his life, one of the ugliest faces ive ever seen. no wonder he hates women because he’d be spit on if he ever tried to approach one
speaking of politics, i'm trying an experiment. i generally drink from an absolute firehose of politics content. i took inventory of everything i was consuming and realized i was subscribed to several substacks, several subreddits, and even more podcasts that are mostly political in nature. that's too much politics! even though i mostly feel pretty good i don't think the quantity of politics stuff i've been consuming is emotionally and mentally healthy.
i unsubbed from all my political substacks and podcasts, instead signing up for one general news newsletter that i receive in the morning so i can stay up to speed in a five minute read, then go about my day. we'll see how it goes. i know it felt good just to unsub from all that stuff, like a weight was lifted off my shoulders i didn't even know was there.
