Austin, TX Interactive: March 9–13 Film: March 9–17 Music: March 13–18
I know this is way early but They just announced the dates and I'm seriously contemplating this for my Bonnaroo, next year, as the music week falls on my spring break. I won't be getting a badge (unless I can find one on the cheap side) and just doing free parties and wandering eating my way thru Austin.
I was thinking of renting a house if other people are interested as well. Just let me know.
ah this is my spring break too!! that is such an awesome idea!!
are there a lot of shows where you don't need the badge to get in, or is that kind of a necessity?
As far as I know you don't need a badge for the day shows ... Just the evening festivities. So it works better for me to spend the money on travel and accommodations than the festival itself.
Easily one of my favorite festivals. You might see a band perform one night and then end up at a barbeque with them the next day. Plus with all of the free and RSVP shows, you really don't have to pay for anything. But even then, the club shows are typically around 10 bucks. It's my festival warm up every year.

There are free shows everyday. Last year I saw DFA 1979, The Strokes, Bright Eyes, Odd Future, !!!, and Kanye all for free over a 3 day span. Just start rsvping early. I would never pay for a badge.

So far this and 35 Denton the week before sxsw are my only certain festivals next year. I try and go every year to sxsw. I spent less than $200 on my whole trip in Austin for 4 days this year. I never buy a badge or a wristband and have very few issues. Rest assured you won't be able to get into every show, but with 2000 bands playing there is always another option to go see.
I also highly recommend bringing a bike since shows can be 20 blocks apart. It''s setup entirely around downtown Austin in every venue, club, parking lot and open nook and cranny available around town. There are tons of free shows with free drinks and Fader Fort is always free with free drinks. It is the most unique festival in the US and a can't miss in my book.
Name another festival that has 2000 bands, there are none.
Well as we get closer we should share ways to RSVP to the shows. I live downtown Austin, moved there last year. I was a little overwhelmed by sxsw and it was kind of hard to find ways into some of the shows. Still got to see some great shows, but also missed some I would have liked.
Wish I could say I had room for some people to stay but my condo is only 744 sq ft and my girlfriend will be staying with me.
I want to go this year, but only if someone whos been before and can help me get the most out of it wants to hang out, haha. I'm scared of being completely overwhelmed as i'd be traveling solo.

SXSW can be easily overwhelming, but that's the fun of it. You may be heading in one direction and some show you had no idea about sucks you in. A good chunk of the time there is free alcohol also. Twitter is extremely useful for seeing what's going on while walking around. Also it should be noted that virtually nothing occurs on the Sunday ending sxsw, and Wednesday thru Saturday are the primary days. Saturday night is usually the best of the best closing the festival with Kanye and Jay-Z, Trentemoller and DFA1979 all playing to close out the fest this year (among 100's of bands elsewhere) all over town.

It's all walking or ride a bike around or pedicab. It takes a while to familiarize yourself, and there is so much going on everywhere that you will find shows randomly. It will be on both sides of I-35 covering from Scoot Inn to Mohawk and down to Antone's with that being the majority of the blocks being used. They do have shows at La Zona Rosa and Auditorium Shores which are walkable but far and some venues near there. Just expect to walk alot.
I bought a cheap bike after mine was stolen last year when I was talking to my friends and left it by the stairs and someone jacked it while I was distracted 10 feet away. It was a lifesaver up to that point. I walked 20 blocks the next day to catch 20 minutes of Asobi seksu.
For RSVPing, set up a new email account for it, some will be mandatory like fader fort which can have an hour line just for the wrist band (which will run out before it's over). Others aren't near as long, but it's trading off marketing for free shows and drinks. No major parties or rsvp's have been announced yet, but mess with texas, dickies, fader fort, pure volume house, and iheartcomix all usually have major parties.
SXSW is an entirely different beast than a camping festival. IT's overwhelming with a few years of experience. But it's as addictive as any other fest.
I've done city fests (cmj and pop Montreal), but SouthBy is way confusing because of all the free stuff. With the two others, you buy tix to individual shows, a few days in advance if it's a popular artist. RSVPing is for that handful of shows put on by booking agencies, but there's only 2 or 3 each evening.

The first of the parties I have seen were being posted today by @sxswpartylist on twitter. Nothing major other than jansport sonicbids band contest. I am amazed how the coachella thread has 37 pages of discussion and this only has 15 or so responses. I had way more fun at sxsw than at any other music festival last year, and it always has the best line-up minus the headliners. Plus Austin is fun as hell.
In comparison to CMJ with 2 or 3 rsvp shows, there may be 2-300 RSVP shows on Friday and Saturday of sxsw. It's inconceivable to rsvp to everything or know what all is going on. Some of my favorite moments of sxsw had to do with walking along and some band I had no idea was playing at the moment sucked me into their show. It's highly unpredictable and chaotic, but that is why it's great.

It sounds like Bruce springsteen will be playing a show at sxsw. This will be one of the most impossible shows to get into without a badge unless it is played at Auditorium shores. Then it would be the most crowded.
So I've decided to keep everyone updated on RSVP's for free shows as soon as I get them. By mid-Feb the free parties will be flooding in. Should be getting some confirmations in the next couple of weeks of the wheres/whens.
I've heard Bloc Party is a possible Auditorium Shores show...

Based on their last tweet, it sounds like counting crows will be playing a free show at Auditorium Shores, not a biggie in my opinion, but it's free. Fiat will not be sponsoring Fader fort, but Budweiser and converse will be.

Andrew bird just added a show at Stubb's on wednesday at sxsw being broadcast by npr. NPR's broadcast of My Morning Jacket playing Evil Urges in 2008 is what got me to start listening to them. I will be in town that night, but doubt I can make it in, but i did walk right in for Ben Harper at the end of his set in 2009 so anything is possible.
Starting to see the formation of many parties now also.

Jesus and Mary Chain got added today, no clue where they will be playing, but I am guessing Stubb's. They were also added to 35 Denton which is where I will be catching them.
can't wait for sxsw this year. working through the interactive part of the festival for my music badge, which will be a first for me. I've done the festival with a wristband and with nothing and while it's still very fun both of those ways, it's going to be so nice not having to worry about anything. i love the community you get with sxsw. Randomly having a beer with david cross and the guitar player for the decemberists is something that is simply not offered elsewhere.

Yep, I know I will not be able to make it to Texas anytime soon, but I really really hope Jesus and Mary Chain do a tour that hits around here.

Miike snow is playing dickies party Thursday night Erykah Badu, Dan the automater, Datsik, Dj Jazzy Jeff are playing red bull threestyle which is free and mega capacity saturday night.
Today is the start of the madness.
