stay safe LD. And yes... learned from some southern folk.. drop the beer bomb into the gatorade and drink up. hydrate and intoxicate at the same time. ;D
On the serious side, hope everyone comes out the other side unscathed. We are down to putting the outdoor stuff away in the am and putting the plywood on the big window out front. After that its hope for the best, prepared for the worst.
best wishes and the best of karma to all of my northeastern friends. Stay safe.
Thanks Zen and KKat. Shall see what the forecast brings tomorrow. Looking like we will get beat up by the wind, and LD will get the 8" of rain. We are 1/2 mile at best from the coast on either side but should be okay. Though our local commercial haunts may all well be flooded. Fingers crossed that it wont be 'That' bad.
My "real" job is as an emergency manager here in NYC. I've been through hurricanes frances, katrina, rita, wilma, and more. Not to mention terrorist attacks, floods, landslides, etc... My biggest concern? I'm not sure that I bought enough wine and liquor today.
I got work tomorrow, and hopefully the weather won't cause many of our reservations to be cancelled. I'm a bit more worried about my sister in NYC, I think she still lives in Brooklyn.
I'm isomewhat encouraged by the fact that it only hit NC as a cat 1 which is a downgrade from what was expected. So maybe it won't be AS bad as originally forecast.
STILL, don't take chances. Water and wind are two incredibly powerful forces.
I would have loved for us to have gotten some rain from the storm. Everything down here is drying up. Tomatoes, flowers....ironic that some parts of the country are drowning and some wilting.
The hurricane is so massive, extreme wind wasn't going to be a major factor with Irene anyway. Besides, the extreme winds only cover a small part of the hurricane in most storms.
It's always been an issue of flooding: whether from storm surge near the coastline or the torrential rains inland. Plus with the TS force winds lasting for hours on top of inches of rain, power outages and trees down will be a common problem.

I thought about this, too! We've had about an inch of rain in the past 3 weeks at my house. The grass crunches under your feet, it's awful. But I shouldn't complain; it's nothing compared to what Texas is going through.
Across the street from here. Thankfully our neighbor was smart and moved his cars into the middle of the lawn, or else they'd be under this thing right now. Shortly after it went down (about 10 min ago or so, during a big gust), neighbor ran out and moved the cars further away from that.
It's so weird seeing the sky so sunny and happy now...
My power went out around 1:50am after I saw a big lightning strike. They said power'd be on by 1am, but just came on about 12:15pm yay! Wind was really picking up around 2am and got scared about the trees and whatnot but all is well in my neck of the woods. Hope everyone north of me in the DC area and near NYC are safe and luck out as well. Figured this thing'd be hyped up a bit, but better safe than sorry. Sad to already hear about several deaths.
That would be my parent's back yard. On the plus side, my mom and dad have been locked in a stare-down regarding the pool (my mom wants to replace with a big concrete fire-pit/patio, my dad thinks the pool should remain even though the only time anyone swims in the pool is when he vacuums it) that now has been resolved for them. That ring is only the top ring (which is tied to the deck and supported by the posts, only), the lining of the pool is about 300 yards downstream in their neighbor's yard.

HEY! I'm not sure what's going on, but if anyone needs a place to stay just North of Atlanta, let me know. My lady and I have 2 guest rooms. call or text ***-***-****.
EDIT: I put my phone number up. the number of telemarketers that have called me with in the last week has increased 10X. My bad.
OK, for anybody who didn't see my FB post... Fawnmart & Quacker texted me; they're OK but have no power (could be days before it's back on) and many, many trees are down. They seem to have come thru relatively unscathed as far as house, cars & pets are concerned, so yay for small miracles!
[ Let us know if there is anything we can do, you are always welcome in Nashville.
Thanks. I think if we can hold out this week we're gonna head to Roanoke this weekend and relax. Fortunately I always stockpile camping supply for this reason alone.
One of the nice things I can say is this is the most community I've ever seen in this city. People probably talking to their neighbors for the first time in years and some for the first time ever.
My thoughts are with those in the Northeast. It seems you guys got hit pretty bad.
A 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment, walks his tour in reverence during Hurricane Irene in Arlington National Cemetery, Va., Aug 27. Members of The Old Guard have guarded the Tomb every second, of every day regardless of weather or holidays since April 6, 1948.

We got skirted completely in Somerville, but my folks and my brother down in southern RI still don't have power. But the big fear was losing their sump pumps and flooding and they seem to have made it out okay on that count. They all lost lots of trees but none fell on the houses or cars by some miracle. News last night said that half of all RI'ers don't have power.
Glad to hear you guys are relatively okay. I hope you get power back sooner than expected and the flood cleanup goes as smoothly as it possibly can!

Damn, I'm so sorry. On the plus side I think your mom got her wish!! What town is this??
Not much to report here in Astoria. The last few rainfalls had flooded the basement at work, however not a drop during Irene. I hear there's plenty of power outages and floods in Long Island, 4 reported deaths in NJ. Hope everyone was safe.
There are a lot of down trees and some widows blew out of a few high rises downtown here in Montreal. There are also about 600,000 without power still, but I never lost mine, hell my Satellite never even went down.
