ok i just bought a honda element i'll be driving down next year. i'm going to be ordering the screens for the front windows, sunroof and hatch from skreenz.com i'll have a couple of fans and an ez up over the car, and i'm contemplating buying a cabana tent that attatches to the hatch. also i'm going to use reflective cutouts for all the windows that dont' have screens over them too keep out the sun (including the front window) so basically i'll have the hatch, front 2 windows and sunroof completely open, plus the ez up and tarps to stop the sun from directly hitting the car
anyone think i'll be ok like this? i might bring a tent as a backup plan but i'd much rather sleep on a platform in the car.

The best way I've found to keep cool is to ditch the tent/car. Just get a really comfortable chair or cot and sleep under the EZ-Up. Air flow and shade are the key.

i bought a cot last year.. i'll bring it with me and worst case scenario i'll just set it up outside the car and snooze
I did this for Vibes with my sisters Element and it worked great. She and her husband also did it again for this years roo and it worked out pretty well for them.

Not an Element, but I slept like a king in the back of my Chevy Tahoe with all open windows and a twin-size mattress in back. (At least until 9 a.m. when it got a tad too bright and hot to sleep.)

my friend told me he was very comfortable in his element. however, he slept at night - not in the heat of the day. for that id say get a pop up tent and some fans

I just brought a nice layback chair to the misting tent and a mask and slept there for hours during the middle of the day very comfortably. So if you are ok with hitting one of the mist tents, then you dont have to worry about how hot it gets in the car
Next time I am going to bring a big box fan and plug it into an inverter off my vehcle. I can run it while I sleep and run it outside under the EZ-Up (as long as I don't drain my battery).
I have done 6 Bonnaroos so far and never seen a single bug other than the occasional ant or spider.
i got bit a few times last year but that could have been the campground we stayed in the previous nights. maybe i'll try the whole sleeping outside thing this year.

It works great, the only things you can control, unless you are in a RV, are shade and airflow. Don't waste your time on anything other than maximizing both.

I got eaten up last Bonnaroo, and so did my neighbors...I dunno what the heck I camped on but it left stinging little bites. I think my experience was very rare though, I had never heard of bugs at Roo from anyone else. And a dose of OFF cured the problem after the first night.
I had more problem being allergic to the dust and the pesticides in it. I intend to get screens for my car for next year so I can have the option to sleep in a clean spot.

I have friends that love the Element for camping at Roo (they both have the tent that attaches to the back of it). I myself sleep in the back of the mini van we rent to come down and just leave the back open, to is 100 times better then using the tent.

i second the sleeping under a shade/ez-up idea. last year we did a tent under an ez-up and it was way too hot. but once you get there you could always try it out and see, maybe with reflectors and windows open it wouldn't be too bad.

i'm trying to figure out how to rig a mosquito net so i can leave my back hatch open... plus i'm 6'5 so the tailgate will give some much needed room. i'm dying to do a dry run with this car... getting chilly out though
This is seriously all you need. A tent, covered by an EZUP, and a reflective tarp tied to the side of the EZUP that the sun rises on. Add 2 battery powered O2 fans in the tent and I never once got hot in there. I would snore for hours while my camp-mates listened and were jealous cause they were awake at 9am dying.

that was my exact setup last year and it only gave me an hour extra of sleep from the year before. which pretty much ended up as 9 am
Have the same set up for four of my six years. If you don't have it, start planning on waking up about 7 AM with the last of the sunrise. This set up gets you relief until (as others have said) about 9. The largest problem is everyone around you who does hot have this system has been up for 2 hours..... FYI: If you get out of your tent and into a chair under an ez-up you can get another hour or two of sleep.....
I had a similiar question to OP. My mom recently got a Tahoe that me and my girlfriend were discussing taking with us in lieu of a tent. Maybe take two EZ Ups, some tarps, and reflectors to put in the windows.
Would this be tolerable? I personally thought it'd be much better, but I'm reading conflicting things here.
