Not sure man, I'll let you know if I hear anything. I heard last year it was pretty amazing. It actually directly competes with Ultra though- it's an all day/all night event. And tickets are pretty pricey (basically going for about the same prices Ultra tickets would have gone for years ago) Personally I'm always to worn out by the end of the night to even consider going to anything else afterwards
Laggy, or really anyone that has been before, what is the vibe like at ultra. Most likely going to be hitting up this festival.
Not gonna lie, but the vibe nothing like Bonnaroo. I feel like too many people there are just there to get fucked up and party to the untz untz untz A great deal of the people aren't typical music fans like you'd find here, and maybe only know a few of the bigger DJs like "OMG Kaskade and Deadmau5!" But on the flipside- everyone is there to have a good time regardless, and it's still alot of fun.
And you'll never ever see as many beautiful scantily clad girls in a single place like you'll see at ultra

Well, while the crowds are certainly completely different, I don't think there's any more people there "just to get f'd up" then there is at Roo. Because lets be honest, there's plenty of people that go to Roo just for that as well. And a lot of the Roo attendees are there for the bigger acts, just like Ultra.
Just stay away from the turrible big acts (and avoid the main stage unless it's an act you HAVE to see), and you'll mainly find cool people that are true fans of the genre.
That being said, obviously it's a completely different genre/scene than Roo caters to, so yeah, it's defintiely waaaaay different.
As far as girls go, you've obviously never been to Coachella...

This will be my first year — and I'm pretty excited in the wake of the Phase 1 announcement. There is more than enough on there for me to see each day. In fact, I'm kinda resigned to the fact there probably will be some tough conflicts.

Same here, phase 1 of the lineup was enough to draw me in. I can't imagine the conflicts once phase 2 and 3 are added. Especially if they add a few more bigger names.

I know Masquerade Motel directly competes with Ultra, but thats what I love about that weekend so much. There are sooooo many things going on during the day to keep you out of the Ultra sun. Highly looking forward to Masquerade Motel as I heard amazing things about it last year.
Whats everyones hotel situation like? Some friends and I are looking at stuff to book now. Hotels are sooo damn expensive though that we are talking about finding enough people to rent a house or a condo with multiple rooms for the week instead of the traditional more expensive hotel option.

I live here, and living here I've never had to bother booking a hotel, so I'm not too knowledgable on that. Last year I got yelled at for suggesting a cheap hotel I knew about, because after some research it turned out to be really ghetto and unsafe.
I do know there's a hostel in miami beach, and it should be pretty cheap but more than likely already booked.
I was gonna suggest living in a van down by the river. But goddamn! But after looking above, you are dropping some serious dollas for this. I wish for all the good fortune it brings you.

Great great lineup. I won't be making it, but I would be thrilled to catch New Order or Kraftwerk somewhere this winter/spring/summer. I hope they do some more touring!
New Order is a bucket list type live act for me that I figured I'd never get a chance to see. here's hoping thats not true.

We're staying at the Red South Beach hotel on South Beach. We booked it a while back, and for the location, it's not too horribly expensive (We're also staying the four days after Ultra to wind down. This will be my first trip to Miami, and we want to drive down to John Pennenkamp Coral Reef State Park in the Keys and snorkel one day after the fest). I do have one question, is traffic after the fest ends each night as bad as I've heard it is?

Eh I live in south beach and I drove home after the fest each night and I don't remember traffic being too ridiculous. What sucks though is you have to drive. The city bus situation is hopeless, and its damn near impossible to find a cab
Post by Chris Major on Dec 28, 2011 9:22:42 GMT -5
Yeah thats why I'm looking for hotel/house rental options down there. I could stay in Broward with fam and friends but that drive every day would suck, and would totally kill the chances of enjoying any of the events aside from Ultra.
Oh and that house idea, we would be splitting it between like 5-10 people so it would actually turn out a lot cheaper than a hotel.
Whats everyone else really pumped for? I think Saturday looks absolutely ridiculous with Duck Sauce, M83, Justice, Avicii, Laidback Luke, and 2manyDJs. Amazingly stacked. I honestly think I might skip Masquerade Motel because this day is just so packed.

To be honest the ones I'm most looking forward to are Pretty Lights and Bassnectar, because I've seen both in the past year, but each were some of my favorite shows of the year and I think it will be epic in a festival setting. Justice is the only headliner I'm really psyched to see. Also I've totally been on a dubstep binge for the past few months- really looking forward to finally seeing Flux Pavillion and Dr. P And of course Knife Party.
Other than that, I need to do some exploring of alot of the other artists. I've always appreciated but never got too deep into Flylo, M83, and SBTRKT. Adding those to my car music rotation this week.

Flying Lotus live is the way to go. I saw him at North Coast in 10, and he was one of the many highlights. Did some really cool stuff with Radiohead songs. I'm personally pumped for Justice, too. I like their albums, and this will be my first time seeing them live. I gotta think the sound, alone, will be epic.

m83 and SBTRKT were really good at Moog. I actually enjoyed SBTRKT more than m83 but if given the chance I think flylo would have been better than either of those. SBTRKT are all over the place and great with the crowd.
M83 live might the second best thing I've seen all year, right behind Portishead. Seriously. It was that good.
That's high praise. I'm putting them down as a must-see.
It's totally worth it for this:
Oh and can I say I'm extremely jealous of you folks. I'm getting an M83 show and seeing Justice elsewhere but damn .. Kraftwerk?!? I cried a little bit.

Word to the wise, avoid the River Park hotel unless its all thats left. I stayed there with 8 other people and while its near Bayfront and pretty cheap, the place is a total shithole. I used the stairs the whole time despite being on the 8th floor due to the elevator being sketch as hell, and the folks at reception really don't give a fuck about any aspect of your stay there. Lets just say I intentionally opted to sleep on the floor due to how scary the beds looked!
If anyone is debating going to Ultra this year, I just want to share my story with you.
Ultra will never get my money again. The vibe was terrible, and it was just a money grab. They were carting dehydrated kids out in ambulances left and right because they had very few water tents and they were 5 DOLLARS a water bottle. And of course, you can't bring in your own water. It just reeked of money-grubbing corporate America, and not the friendly community Bonnaroo and many other festivals try to perpetuate.
The music and production was good, but everything was asphalt. No lawns to sit on...just very unusual. Not to mention you're going to be paying ridiculous amounts of money to either get a close hotel or cab back and forth from a cheap hotel.
I'd recommend going to Miami during Ultra, but just going to the clubs for the after parties.
