Actually, Deadmau5 was on uStream the other night (i know im a huge fanboy, whatevs) talking about his extreme distaste for Ultra. Talking about how they try to lock in these acts for "Exclusive Ultra Only" contracts. He said normally Miami Music Week is a hayday for DJs because they can fly down there, play 3-4 venues/sets back-to-back and make a good quick payday. But now Ultra is being greedy and locking these artists in for only one set.
Yeah, those idiot security goons made me dump out my camel bak full of ice cold water. I ended up having to buy almost $20 worth of water bottles just to keep me hydrated that day. Such a blatant money grab with potentially dangerous consequences. It's almost hilarious since they let me bring in much more...uh...illicit things without a problem.
Bayfront is a much bigger park than Bicentennial so hopefully that will be an improvement for those going this year. Bicentennial was under construction for some reason during Ultra 2011 so the whole area was littered with rocks and loose dirt, guess there's your slice of Bonnaroo!

Ultra really is terrible for the things most of you are mentioning, but in regards to the "exclusive" clauses, that's silly. They've been doing for as long as I've payed attention to the fest (which goes back quite a ways now). To say they've only now started doing it as a money grab is silly.
It's just like any other festival. Bonnaroo, Lolla, Coachella, etc. There are radius clauses for the bigger acts. There would be much less demand for the festival if you all those acts also played WMC (or music week, or w/e the hell they call it now).
All that being said, yes, Ultra was created by a miami club promoter, and it shows. Drives me crazy, and the price gouging is the main thing that keeps me from going on the years I choose not to. All that said, it's still a fun time, albeit an extremely expensive one.

All of these criticisms are unfortunately very true. I don't know how they haven't been sued yet. The price gouging for water is unconscionable. And last year was really rough- bicentennial was under construction and there was gravel everywhere.
And, for the record, Bayfront isn't much bigger than bicentennial. IT's roughly the same size, but feels smaller. But it should be grassier and more comfortable.
I continue to go because it's a great fest to have in my backyard. And I know what to expect at this point, so it's not too dissapointing. The great shows and top notch production make up for it

Yeah.. it's looking like no Mau5 at Ultra this year
Yea that was from Christmas Eve. When I watched it I was a little worried that he may never play Roo again.
well he seemed impressed with Lollapalooza. his primary beef seems to be poor organization from inexperienced organizers. I would think he'd view Roo as a truly professional fest.
I agree $600ish for a 3 day Fest is too rich for me.
And I remember that he went on almost an hour late at Bonaroo because they were having difficulty setting up his stage
ah ok. I should have investigated the ticket prices before I commented.
hate that about his roo set. everything went smoothly for his voodoo set, but I know there was some nonsense he had to deal with regarding an Ampersand after show that never ended up happening.
Roommate and I bought our tickets the second we saw the lineup. Now my only question is when the hell is Masquerade Motel gunna go on sale? You hear anything about that yet laggy? The website has a bunch of cryptic stuff up with clocks and such. The clocks lead to the number 28 which makes me think tix will go on sale either December 28th or January 28th.

None of the regulars in this thread have pointed out that all the tickets have sold out, even GA now..... The demand's been crazy. By the way, my wife and I were watching this National Geographic show over the weekend, and they followed an EMS crew around for one night of Ultra. They ended up picking up this struggling shirtless guy, whose friends must have bailed on him.

I was at Bayfront park last night for the first time in maybe 8 years. I figured it must be bigger than I had remembered.
I found myself looking around wondering how the fuck Ultra will fit in there. It's a relatively big park, but the landscape of it will make it very difficult. There's lots of trees and a couple permanent concrete structures, including a huge ass fountain.
All in all I would say the park is roughly the size of the What stage area at bonnaroo, but possibly even smaller, and with a much more difficult landscape to work with
I'm thinking they'll probably include the bayfront ampitheatre next door. That could be the 'live' stage this year. It would make sense. Once you include the bayfront ampitheatre and lawn outside it begins to look more do-able
Also the floating stages rumor makes sense. There's plenty of standing room next to the bay. If they were able to put stages on the water that could definitely fix some of the logistical issues

Nice detective work! There are a ton of trees in the park, which influences sight lines. I think the middle red box would be the perfect placement for a floating stage, keeping that in mind. I guess the good thing, with the layout and trees, is there will be plenty of shade for chilling during the day.

Look on priceline. Just be prepared to pay a pretty penny if you plan on staying anywhere close to the festival. There aren't a lot of deals, considering the timing.

I stayed out by the airport last time. 20 minutes away and it was still packed with fest goers. Hotel was reasonable (100 a night or so), but rather shitty, and you still have to deal with paying for parking each day. You're pretty much out a good chunk of money no matter what ya do, sadly. :/

The List is up and running here www.thelistwmc.com/ Some of those cruises look money, but one is prior to Ultra and one is during the day during Ultra...

Just pulled the trigger on a room at The Epic which is only a couple blocks away from Bayfront Park. Its going to be a pretty penny but very nice and walking distance and we found a 15% discount. Going to be around $450 a night but at this point, oh well.
Basically this is going to knock me from VIP back down to GA for Bonnaroo this year but oh well. Cant stay on top forever.

Glad to hear you found something. I can't wait to go to the the festival and then be able to go back to a bed at a hotel vs. a tent. Waking up and jumping into a pool also is going to rule.

Hell yeah man. You're staying by the beach though right? Be careful, the traffic to and from every day is going to be a nightmare....but you will have much easier access to the after parties.
