Im sure pretty much everyone has some or many friends that SAY they are going to get a ticket and come, then make excuses. Some valid and some bogus. I never get upset with them, because they're missing it and I won't be. HOWEVER, some of them would be fun to party with on the farm, so I get bummed!
This year I took the liberty of renting an RV, paid for it myself, and am inviting people to come with (and pay a share of the RV of course) and Im getting the same thing.
How do you all decipher between the honest Yes's and the ones who say yes cuz it sounds cool but have no interest in actually going, or the ones that will eventually make excuses and not show? Im having a little bit of a hard time because I don't want to overinvite...see...I really only want 4 MAX 5 people in the RV (that sleeps 8-9) so its not all cramped and all that.
Experiences? Advice? Rants about past occurrences?

^I was just going to say this. I've lived in Tennessee my whole life and I have friends who regularly don't decide to go until the week before the festival. It's really easy to get a cheap ticket, appropriate a little money and head out when you live an hour or two from the site.

You were actually disagreeing with him, but you are correct. Most of my group never decides until the last minute. Usually there is some arbitrary dollar amount they think they will pay for a ticket.
and Im 10 hours away, so yeah. I didn't even consider that. I decided to cast a wide net, and told them all, the first 3 that either buy a ticket or give me a non-refundable deposit on the RV are in. That leaves one spot if I decide to take some arm candy with me. Worst case scenario I fill the RV with people from the forum at a discounted rate and eat the rest. Either way IM going.
Its funny cause sara, jade, aba, maynard have no idea that I've paid my deposit for the RV, but I'm really gonna skip Roo and go to EDC Vegas when they book Daft Punk | Skrillex | and Deadmau5
I was about to say, if you can't get your local friends to commit, find some people here on the board. I've actually tried to think if I have ever met a weird/bad/crazy person from Inforoo, and I can't say that I have. Everyone I have met from the boards have been awesome, cool, and true to their word.
I guess I'm lucky that I have friends that go every year. It's a tradition now; I'm not sure we would stop going even if it was the worst lineup in history.

in your mind, don't include them in any of the plans until they have bought a ticket. in 2010 it started with just me and another guy, so many said "yeah im down!" but nobody ended up buying a ticket. I started a facebook group entitled "LA-->ROO 2010." with like 30 people invited. i told them all that the trip was taking place no matter what, and the first three people to buy a ticket can come with me. ended up going with three other people, all co-workers, and we had the roadtrip of our life. best 12 day vacation ever.
after that, i'll never stop loving bonnaroo and never stop going.

$150 is the magic number for several of my friends...
I had 2 separate groups of friends back out last year which led me to consider selling my ticket. Decided not to sell it shortly before Bonnaroo and went solo.
I ended up being glad my friends backed out since going alone was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be (thanks Camp Inforoo). I love them but Lil Wayne/Eminem/Wiz Khalifa were pretty much the only names they recognized on the lineup besides some of the comedy acts.

You really did not go solo, we adopted you pretty quick dude.
I've been to Roo alone the past 3 years. I really enjoy it that way cause I can go see any band I want, at any time I want, at back or front if I want. No having to "meetup" with people.
Definitely cast the wide net. I get 15-25 people each year that say they are seriously considering or "definitely going"... last year I ended up with one Roo buddy. Cast that wide net and let it be first come first serve. You're on the right track!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

It's a bit of a tradition amongst my friends, although I'm the only one to have gone five years in a row. I've had a few friends go once or twice, but only Jury and our buddy Cheyenne have made it a total of three years (nonconsecutive). I just can't miss a year!
I would start a thread on here, title it something not to telling and see who bites. I would go with something subtle, like, "2 21 year olds and a 30 foot RV looking to PARTY"
I have done alone, with people, meeting people there and I've always had a great time. THere is something to be said about not having to babysit. In 09 my two best friends went after hearing me rave about it the year before and while they had fun it wasn't their cup of tea. Neither has been back and I'm OK with that. You are never truly alone at Roo. This was the first year I actually met up with Inforoosters but I have made friends every other time. The RV throws a kink in things though.
I am sure that there is not the fun community type whatever that I enjoyed this year (our neighbors were fun, and there were lots of personalities that I had fun being around) but I just...I can't do it in a tent. Call me a wimp, Im alright with that. I missed too much this year because of multiple reasons, and I will just NOT let that happen again. I am going to need to sleep until noon-1 every day to be able to make it to the shows I want to see. I realized that this year. (see 'bonnaroo regrets' thread - I missed pretty much the whole weekend)
At any rate, I have been lurking and posting on this board for about a year now (give or take) and I am really excited about this year. I totally plan on making the brunch and bringing something kickass too. I do hope some of my friends come (one is def in for sure - the girl I was dating last year, we have become really tight) but if they don't - welp, Imma have fun without em!

Whenever I have a live music type trip I'm planning, whether it be a festival or Phish tour or a random show a couple hours away, and it involves me making some sort of financial outlay (like the RV in your case, or nonrefundable hotels, or concert tickets, etc) I make it clear to my friends that once they commit to go, they have to come through financially. Even if they commit and decide not to go, they still have to pay their portion of the initial trip investment.
I make it clear, in a friendly way, that if they do back out and don't fulfill their part of the initial investment, then I'll never do live music with them again. Meaning I'll never front you ticket money, or book a hotel for you, etc. If you want to do things on your own and we can meet up at the show, its all good, we're still friends, but once you have demonstrated your commitments can't be trusted, I can't financially take a risk on you again.
I started doing this after I got burned holding some expensive tickets for friends. I haven't had a problem since I started communicating thoroughly. Everyone that does live music with me knows now that I do not frack around. In particular my 3.0 Phish tour buddies are the most awesome people in the whole world, and we also make sure the finances are taken care of, from tickets to hotels to gas money, before the trip even starts. Why frack up a good thing with money BS between friends?
EDIT: as a sidenote I think its awesome kicking it solo at a festival. i can definitely be patient and work it out with a group, but its awesome to completely embrace your selfishness and see whatever you want to see whenever the hell you want to see it.

Woodstock 99 I ended up going by Greyhound Bus when the last of our foursome decided not to go and had the only car that could make the trip at the time. They "gave" us their ticket in return for not going.

I'd say this qualifies as completely screwing over your live music buddies.
