Ahhh the Pitchfork crowd. The biggest set of Neutral Milk Hotel fans who didn't give a shit/know about Mangum until 5+ years after the band broke up.
PJ Harvey would rule! Saw her in ATL in like '08.....she had John Prine on guitar, amazing show.
I'm 26, not all that young, and I was 12 when NMH broke up in 1998. Unless you only dig going to festivals with people over the age of 30, this condescending comment makes no sense.
John Parrish?? No clue who he is, I was shithammered and the girl I was with said it was John Prine. Too good to be true'd.
All I'm saying is hardly anyone gave a crap about NMH when they were around. I know plenty of people over 30 who fall into this category who act like superfans now.
Of course if you were a kid you are exempt.
And a festival with average age of at least 30 sounds great, that's one of the reasons Wanee is such a good time.

Why does it bother you if they like the music now? Stuff grows on people, they get re-exposed to it, they are in a different place and have new musical tastes and appreciation as many years pass. You're implying that they're just hopping on the bandwagon, and maybe they are, but it's easy to do because the songs are good. If they genuinely appreciate the music and get joy from it, then why does it matter how they get to it? I just never understood this attitude from people. NMH isn't a little secret anymore. Going to just have to deal with that, dude.
That being said, I think his set would be fun, but I'd really rather see him play with the full band. I don't think those songs would have nearly as powerful an effect on me without all the great instrumentation behind them.

I'd love to see PJ, but I'd also be worried about what kind of stuff she'd play. Her setlists center heavily around whatever album she's touring behind at the time, so she ends up forgoing a lot of great older stuff. If she played a "best of" full-band tour with the usual suspects (John Parish, Mick Harvey, and Jean-Marc Butty), I follow her around.

Usually they announce the first round of Pitchfork Festival artists in early/mid March. They usually make the announcement on a Friday (so that it most likely be the sites headlining new article for the entire weekend). So it could be this week or next week:
As you know, Consequence of sound lists these rumored artists to possibly perform:
Best Coast Bon Iver Chavez Cloud Nothings Frank Ocean Grimes Jeff Mangum PJ Harvey Willis Earl Beal
Just to keep the conversation going, here are some other artists that I wouldn't be surprised if they pop up:
Mouse On Mars : Longtime electronic band. Just released first album in a long time and got a rave pitchfork review. Have no tour dates in America yet and are playing Europe until early June.
Pulp: Could be a potential headliner (but might show up at Lolla). Aren't playing any Chicago dates yet. Would fit in well with a Pitchfork Crowd.
Sleigh Bells : New album everyone is all over. Played there in 2010. Could be one of the bigger names this year.
Lee Ranaldo Band : New solo album. Sonic Youth and related projects have always been featured at past PFork festivals.
The Afghan Wigs : Reuniting this year. Could be this years Dismemberment Plan style spot.
Up and coming bands:
Perfume Genius Frankie Rose Suckers Death Grips Youth Lagoon Nicholas Jaar Danny Brown Oneothrix Point Never The War on Drugs ASAP Rocky IceAge The Men
Just some thoughts.
Also, pretty crazy that it will most likely be the same weekend as Forecastle (7/13-15). I know that both festivals will have a different vibe (Pitchfork's hipster blog vibe vs. Forecastle/MMJ's Bonnaroo friendly vibe) but you think they will have many crossover artists playing both festivals. Chicago is only like a 6 hour drive from Louisville.
Vampire Weekend Feist Godspeed You! Black Emperor Hot Chip AraabMUZIK A$AP Rocky The Field Liturgy Kendrick Lamar Grimes Cloud Nothings Tim Hecker Willis Earl Beal
That's not a bad start but nothing I'd be crying over missing. Almost half of them are playing Primavera and I'm betting we get a few more of those in a coupla days.
It's not bad for $110 but I hope the additions are stellar.

Agreed. GY!BE is by far the biggest draw from those names, and they were just here last spring (not that I wouldnt totally dig seeing them again). And is Vampire Weekend still headliner material? I was hoping we'd all forget about them by now.
Post by doorknob2323 on Feb 28, 2012 14:35:55 GMT -5
Yeah that's somewhat underwhelming so far. With the exception of GYBE and Hot Chip, nothing I am really that blown away by.
Quite shocked not to see Bon Iver on the lineup. Do you think he is doing Lolla now? I know the band is performing in Norway the following weekend but its still a possibility.

I was bummed that I couldn't go this year, but not so much anymore. That might be the weakest initial lineup they've ever delivered. GY!BE is a cool headliner choice, and Hot Chip is a good get, especially since they won't be at Coach/Roo/Lolla. Nothing else is worth the trip, at least not for me. I love Tim Hecker and The Field, but a summer afternoon in Union Park is far from an ideal setting for either of them.

I got the email earlier... sweet lineup, but nothing over the top like last year. So far, not really worth the ticket if you don't live nearby (I don't). GY!BE, Tim Hecker, Feist, and A$AP Rocky jumped out at me, and I enjoy Hot Chip and Grimes, but that's about it. I still haven't been able to get over how much I hated the Vampire Weekend show at Roo in 08. I really liked their album, but haven't listened to it since that show. My whole group, which was really big in 08, were in consensus that it was just a bad show. I'll probably be skipping this year : /

I'm an unabashed Vampire Weekend fanboy so I'm glad they'll be there. I was always away at school whenever they'd come through Chicago and Milwaukee so I've never gotten a chance to see them.
While there's some other good stuff in there too I certainly agree the initial lineup is weaker this year than in year's past. They usually have some solid additions though. I remember 3-day passes sold out super quickly last year, I wish they were doing it on a Saturday instead of Friday this year.
Post by problem dog on Feb 28, 2012 19:23:11 GMT -5
Passes didn't sell out until the next day, so you should have time. I'm guessing it takes a little longer this year. I could be wrong, but I don't think this year's headliners carry as much heat as last year's trio. Cut Copy, D-Plan reunion, and OFWGKTA were also bigger selling points last year than any of the currently announced undercard, save for maybe Hot Chip.
Of course, it seems like festivals sell out quicker and quicker every year....so who knows.
I'm kind of surprised at all the people calling it a bad or mediocre lineup, but tastes are tastes. I think it's a fantastic initial lineup and I'm looking forward to the additions. Definitely buying a three-day pass. I'm not big on Vampire Weekend, but that just means I can check out a show somewhere else in Chicago that night.
Looking forward to Feist, Godspeed, Hot Chip, AraabMuzik, A$AP, The Field, Liturgy, Grimes, and Tim Hecker, and I've been meaning to check out Kendrick Lamar and that new Cloud Nothings record

How dare they like a band that you were into waaayyyy before. I mean, everyone knows music isn't for sharing and you can only be a true fan of a band if you were into them from the beginning. Shit, I can't possibly be a true Beatles fan. Or a true Replacements fan. I guess I'm just a poseur

Somebody mentioned something about Afghan Whigs. They'll most likely be at Cincinnati's brand new Bunbury Festival that weekend, seeing that they're from there. Not that it rules them out entirely, but if you really wanna see Afghan Whigs that weekend, best come to Cincinnati.

There's a ton of artists playing Forecastle that I'd love to see crossover if at all possible. I'd be happy with any of Beach House, Atlas Sound, Sleigh Bells, Real Estate, Washed Out, and Wye Oak. Holding out (probably unrealistic) hope for Beach House, Atlas Sound and Sleigh Bells since they're playing Friday and that would give them more time to get to Chicago, even though I think it's probably about 5 hours away?

Oh. I wanted to point out they added The Weeknd to Primavera. Here's a list that is playing the p4k stage:
