The last two years I'd been pretty sure I'd be going then had to back out for some reason. I really want to do it this year but I've heard it gets ridiculously crowded?

It doesn't get horribly over crowded from my experiences - I hit up Pitchfork in 10 and North Coast in 10 and 11. Both fests utilize the park in a similar manner, and its pretty user friendly. I have noticed the lines for the porta pots can back up, but there's a row near the courts that don't get used as much.

How was the crowd this past year? I'd hate to stereotype Pitchfork folk, but some friends of mine who went and said the hipster crowd was such a bummer.

I didn't go in 11, but in 10 my wife and I couldn't help but notice - and comment on - the difference between the 'roo crowd and Pitchfork crowd. You'll see your share of skinny jeans, even beneath the hot summer sun, but I thought the Pitchfork crowd was fine. It's a lot more laid back and not as partycentric.

I went in '10 and '11. The crowd is fine, unless you have a knee-jerk hatred for hipsters. Maybe a few more annoying teenagers than most festivals, but they're a minority.
The two main stages don't get overly crowded, but the much smaller third one can be a nightmare when they schedule a popular act. Just show up early if there's someone you really want to see.
I've been the past two years and, aside from being one of the best-curated festivals, it treats its crowds the best of any other festival I've been to. Plus, it's generally easy to get pretty close for whatever act you want.
And this hipster thing is a bunch of bullshit. Easily one of the best crowds of any festival I've been to.

I've been to pitchfork the last two years and the best part is the free bottled water. They give out so much.
That is really nice. Just imagine if Roo did that. I would be willing to bet they would easily give away over 1 million bottles. Not really environmentally friendly but none the less would be nice

If Roo did that, I would encourage everyone I hate to volunteer for post-fest waste pickup.

I agree with you that Lolla has more money. But don't discount Pfork. Remember in 2010 when they got Modest Mouse, Pavement, & LCD as headliners. That was shocking, especially LCD who I thought were a lock for Lolla.
So I could see M83 as sub-headliner. Maybe even a headliner. This new album is really taking them off to a bigger stage.

Strong rumors are floating around now that Jeff Mangum & PJ Harvey will be headlining Pitchfork this year. I love them both but I am not sure as to how captivating they will be in a festival like setting.

Jeff Mangum makes a lot of sense, I assumed he would be a headliner this year. Honestly, I was half expecting him to be there last year. The sing-a-longs would probably be pretty insane, particularly since half that crowd probably knows every word to the major Aeroplane songs by heart.
Ahhh the Pitchfork crowd. The biggest set of Neutral Milk Hotel fans who didn't give a shit/know about Mangum until 5+ years after the band broke up.
PJ Harvey would rule! Saw her in ATL in like '08.....she had John Prine on guitar, amazing show.
I'm 26, not all that young, and I was 12 when NMH broke up in 1998. Unless you only dig going to festivals with people over the age of 30, this condescending comment makes no sense.
