Personally, I don't think those worth having would be scared off by our (really very mild) teasing we sometimes take part in.
I have to agree with this point. Posters that are worth having around will realize that there is nothing mean spirited going on, they will realize that this is just our way of policing the TML (because even 50 mods probably couldn't keep up), they will learn from their mistakes, they will become better posters. This is a process all of us go through. I bet every single one of us got it when we started.
Our harassment does not become vicious until the bad posting becomes a trend erring on the side of trolling
Why does the TML need to be policed? I don't think the point is about noobs starting threads for bands that already have one. It's about the fact that if one member of the board wants to start a thread to discuss a band that the frequent posters of the TML don't like, the frequent posters can't just leave the thread alone. They have to go into it and belittle the person for not having a ”sophisticated” taste in music (I actually read that from someone, and literally laughed out loud. What a load of sh!t).
Just because you don't appreciate the music that certain artists make doesn't mean you need to treat those who do like they are idiots. You are not making yourself look smart, you are just showing your immaturity.
FYI ”You” doesnt refer to you personally Bacon. You do things the right way mostly. But I'd like to know what makes a poster or a post bad?

It has absolutely nothing to do with the bands. Ya we gave Phi a ton of shit, but it was good humored shit and I think he would agree he was asking for it and egging it on. The stuff that gets shitted on the most are duplicate threads, "did you see this poster I think its real" stuff, saying something that was said one page back. The stuff that proves somebody isn't actually reading and therefore not actually trying to be a member of the community.
PS whoever mentioned "sophisticated taste in music" is an idiot if they werent doing it in a tounge and check way.

100% percent agree that these things are totally annoying, for the exact reason you pointed out.
The fact though, is that it is about the bands. Casual music fans don't have much of a voice in the TML, and it's because they get basically chased out of posting in that forum. It's become a place where everyone likes all the same acts, and also dislike all the same acts. So those who don't follow the trend, don't even bother to post there because it's not worth it to deal with all the arguing they would be in for for doing so. It's the reason Phi had to lock his Skrillex thread, the reason why I had to change the name of my Eminem and Lil Wayne thread last year, and why new posters, for the most part, come and go on this board. It's the first forum all new posters go to, and once they get crapped on, they say ”f*ck it. This isn't worth my effort.” At least that's what I see when I read the forum.
isn't the whole idea of TML is to debate endlessly about music. So unless people are being mean about other people's music taste then why does that place need to be policed.
When really if you think about it the "policing" part of it is the "mean" part of it.
I have strong feelings about what kind of music I like. But at the same time I love to hear about what kind of music other people love. Even if I hate it. It gives me a better understading of music in general. Even if I don't consider it good music.
When I was a child I had parents of my friends callings my father and telling him that their kid wasn't allowed to hang out with me because I wasn't censored from music like NIN and Marilyn Manson. His response was "I'm sorry that you feel that way but I don't care if my daughter is listening to someone throwing shit on the wall and called it music. As long as she is listening to something that is music then that is all I care about."
I have my father to thank for my music tastes. He let me listen to everything. He let me make my own mind.
So I feel like the TML is a place where people can go to learn new things, whether it be Skrillex or The Beach Boys. It's a place that they can go and find out information and learn.
So I think that forum needs less policing. And more open discussion.
Maybe tonight I'll sit down with a really big drink and catch up.
I'm never going to finish the actual book I've been reading.
You'll finish it, for sure. Just set your mind to it. You'll be happy once it's done.
I sarted reading 11/22/63 right around the time the line up droped. I've only made it through 200 pages. I can normally read read about 100 a day while I'm at my daughers swim practice.
Instead I've been on Inforoo on my phone.
There is no hope for me. It's a really good book too.

I am going to agree with the voices that say the less policing done by our resident hall monitors the better. If you see a duplicate thread just report it to a mod and ignore it though in all fairness since ITM became a mod that has not really been a problem anymore.
I dont know about you guys, but anytime I have pictured Juggs in my head, I see Barney Stinson... ???
Ever since Badass Barry Hall, I have pictured him like that. Damn you avatars for skewing perception. Maybe I'll make my avatar Megan Fox or Blake Lively and let imaginations run wild.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

So, I'm done with my opinion now.
Back to cooking.
I think maybe you misread my last post. Very few attacks are made based on musical taste alone. Plus in TML the discussion is Bonnaroo music. If you start a Taylor Swift thread (hey wolf ) in the TML you are assuredly going to get a lot of negative responses because the majority of people don't want her at Roo. That said the vast majority of people would leave personal attacks out of it, until said person starts posting stuff about Taylor Swift in multiple threads.
When you post an opinion in the TML you are opening yourself and your opinion up for disagreement from others. That is indeed the point of the forum. If you aren't confident enough in your musical tastes that you can accept others disagreeing and can't defend yourself then the internet is probably not that right venue for you to be expressing those tastes.

The fact of the matter is that not everyone is as used to posting on message boards as some of us. For some people, inforoo is their first forum/message board and they discovered it because they want to talk about bonnaroo. There are some who generally are new at all of this and don't know how to take criticism or the ettiquette of posting. It can also be hard because just about every message board is different (in terms of rules, posting quality, trolls, etc.) so someone who posts primarily on a Puppy Message Board may find the criticism/jokes on here really harsh after joining. The thing is.....what some consider "too harsh" on here is what people who post on other message boards may consider "too nice" because of how they are used to thing elsewhere on the web.
We're all different and the internet message board thing can lead to problems because if I make a joke about someone they may react as if I'm telling them "everything you think and do is terrible" but really it was just a wink/nudge kind of joke.
There are always going to be problems between members and there hasn't been one message board I've posted at where the "mods" weren't criticized at some point for one reason or another. There will always be issues that arise when someone takes another's post in a way that it wasn't intended. And there will always be trolls/posters who find joy in annoying others. There will always be cliques or groups of posters that enjoy discussing things more with others in that group.
Of course, there will always also be jokes made about others. Ideally, it would be between more active members who have gotten to know each other a bit more on here and will know better how the person will react. One of the problems that comes about is someone who is newer here will post something that does deserve a bit of ridicule/joking but when 4 or 5 people all jump on it and tell that person that what they said is wrong/dumb it starts to feel like an attack from all sides.
I think it's best if everyone here just takes a quick second or two to think about who they're responding to and how their post may be interpreted before hitting the reply button. I try to do it most of the time and have advised others to do the same. I think it helps for the most part.
We're all different....but we all love Bonnaroo....even if we will disagree loudly with each other about the quality of bands/artists.

I'm a big fan of Jugg's letter. We weren't allowed to make it the "Official Welcome to Inforoo" literature but that hasn't stopped myself and other from linking to it when someone is new or brings up one of the topics that he addresses. I saw one recently where a new poster talked about how one artist would draw a bunch of idiot fans who are only there for that artist (and referenced Eminem). Basically the same old "so-and-so will ruin roo this year" post and I was glad to see someone link to Jugg's letter.
No real problems there. Some asked if the guy was serious and once the link was posted the conversation continued on.
I dont know about you guys, but anytime I have pictured Juggs in my head, I see Barney Stinson... ???
I like to picture my Juggs with like giant eagle's wings and singing lead vocals for Lynryd Skynryd, with like an angel choir, and I'm in the front row and I'm hammered drunk!
