Can't wait for Outside lands. Just bought my tickets yesterday. Does anyone know when they announce the days/set times? Those headliners are super strong and I would love to figure out which ones will be conflicting. I would hate to have stevie wonder and Neil Young on at the same time.
So who all is doing this? I just realized that I do have a ticket for it and the days off of work. I don't know how I would afford transportation or finding a place to stay but I am considering trying.

It's either this or Gathering of the Juggalos. ICP or Neil and Crazy Horse? A festival in my backyard or travel to some godforsaken place in Illinois? Have people throwing poop or not? Hmmm . . .
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I have no idea how far the stages are away from each other, but just looking at the schedule and based on what I have already seen recently and am going to see soon, I would do the following:
Friday Dirty Dozen Brass Band > Tanlines > some Two Gallants > Fitz and the Tantrums > Beck > Die Antwoord > Antibalas > MSTRKRFT > Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Saturday Zola Jesus > some Animal Kingdom >Tame Impala > Father John Misty > Alabama Shakes > Michael Kiwanuka > Big Boi > Thee Oh Sees > Passion Pit > half of Metallica's > Sigur Ros
Sunday Tom Morello: The Nighwatchman > first half of Trampled by Turtles' set > second half of Franz Ferdinand's set > Amadou & Mariam > Electric Guest > Santigold > Bomba Estereo > Stevie Wonder
I'd try to get as close as possible for the sets in bold

Got into California today and ready for a great start to one of my favorite fests tomorrow:
Dirty Dozen or Futurebirds -- Tanlines -- Fitz -- Beck --Part of Die Antwoord --MSTRKRFT -- Justice -- Sleeping in the trunk of my car outside Golden Gate Park. I think I'm going to the beach cleanup Saturday morning in case anyone else is.

How was the Lolla-->Jack White-->whatever else week? Did you sleep more than 3 hours a night?

It was so incredible. Left Minneapolis for Chicago on Thursday to see Neon Indian and Twin Shadow for free at a show with free booze. I parked about three miles from Lolla and just walked back and forth each day. I had never been to Chicago before and my walks let me see a lot of beauty I didn't know was there. Went along the lake and river through downtown most mornings and nights. Fest was really good and saw a ton of great sets (TEED, Doomtree, and Jack White being the ultimates). Made out with a stranger at Bassnectar. She kept telling me about business school and how her dad was the president of some company in between our messing around. She kept insisting I was seventeen which was bizarre. At least she let me spank her ass a ton.
Every night was good sleep except one where I kept waking up from being too hot. Thankfully I have a pretty good fan. Actually very comfy, minus laying down old cereal boxes to cover the broken glass I forgot was in my trunk sleeping area. Changing my underwear in 95 degree weather with the trunk lid down after baby wiping my genitals wasn’t the most comfortable thing ever though. I was right across from a park so took a hobo shower in this bathroom with no lights a few times. The sink was constantly overflowing so always had to stand in water and have rich people look at me as I stood at the sink shirtless with shampoo in my hair. But I stayed clean and physically comfortable. Can't say the same for those unlucky enough to witness me scrubbing away.
Jack White in Omaha was okay but it was nothing compared to how he destroyed at Lolla. Standing eight back at the main stage for the last act of the fest, barefoot in the mud, was just too good. His Lolla show went by so quick and I loved it all. In Omaha I had to speed all day to get there because I spent too much time Monday morning taking photos of me pointing a Big Mac at the Home Alone house. Got there just as Jack started and it was decent. That's more on me than him though, especially since I heard people say such great things after. He did play “We’re Going To Be Friends” in Omaha which I was extremely happy to hear. I'll see him again Sunday and hope it's somewhere in between the two shows.
Tuesday I saw Justice at Red Rocks. Wanted to hike there beforehand but didn't make it in time to get recovered from the long drive in my uncomfortable car. Made show friends while waiting to get in. Ended up second row center. Justice put on one of the best shows I've ever seen. Maybe the best show I've seen since Sufjan in 2010, though I might change my opinion on that as I get further distance from it. It brought me to life with its intense energy on a tiring day. I was going to do Neil Young at OSL but after that show I've decided to double up on Justice this week and hope I don't get burnt for being greedy. Perfect presentation, music, and show atmosphere. Red Rocks is beautiful and as I drove through Colorado and Wyoming on Wednesday I kept thinking how I'd love to spend a few weeks hiking and camping around there, then coming by whenever a good show was at Red Rocks. Perhaps next summer.
Wednesday night I was in Utah and did a six or so mile hike in a mountain area to a natural hot springs with a little waterfall. The pools were right in the stream and formed by rocks. Got there just as it was getting dark and ended up soaking for almost two hours. Talked to some early 20ish, possible ex-Mormons who didn't know any of the music from the top lines of Lolla or OSL (though had heard of a couple). It was a guy and a girl and the girl said she grew up in a Mormon enclave. By myself I soaked naked and stargazed before needing to hit the road again. Hiked back in the dark using my cell phone since I forgot my flashlight in the car.
Today I got into California after driving through Nevada all morning and afternoon. Now I'm at my rich, suburbanite sister's house. I spent seven nights in a row eating peanut butter sandwiches, stealing showers in park sinks and roadside camp showers, sleeping in my car by myself on various city streets and state rest stops. Now today I got to swim in a backyard pool, soak in a hot tub, eat tons of food, play with my nephews and niece (I kept having an evil space villain named Dark Howling Blazer enter my brain in the pool and they had to attack every time until he left my system), and now I'm sleeping in my own bedroom with a big screen. It's a jarring yet nice change, but I wasn't sick of my car life or anything. Mostly I just like seeing my family. Back to the trunk tomorrow night!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

The festival has been absolutely incredible so far. Golden Gate Park is beautiful and I would go to any halfway decent fest there. Beck was a huge influence on my musical tastes as a teen and this was only my second time seeing him. All of his more downtempo songs were absolutely incredible. I'm pretty sure he kept looking down during "After the Gold Rush" to read the lyrics. Made out with a buku hot Asian girl during Justice so I can't fully comment on how the show was, but they were incredible again. I will be so happy if we get them at Roo next year.
Today I kind of thought was going to be a bit meh since there wasn't much for me to see in the afternoon. Got my Four Loko taken away at the gate and it was very sad to see the lady just toss it without regard to its historical value in our society. Said a little prayer and moved on. I ended up going to a pretty good comedy show, then did Shakes, Big Boi, Passion Pit, and Sigur Ros. Everyone was so good other than Big Boi, but I've seen him three times so I'm just a bit bored with it. Passion Pit were much better than their show at Lolla. If you have never seem Sigur Ros in the dark then you owe it to yourself. They were good at Lolla in the afternoon, but what I saw tonight was one of the most intense, beautiful shows I've ever attended. When I saw Jonsi at Moogfest I thought the same thing. Their music comes alive in a way you might not expect from just the records alone. Go see them!
I decided to drive the hour back to my sister's tonight so I could shower and pull a trough pig on all her food. I had a good night's sleep in my trunk on Friday other than waking up cold a few times. I might trunk sleep tomorrow so I can walk around San Francisco on Monday but not sure yet, as I'll be in California another week and so have more opportunities to go back. Sunday I'm camping main stage all day other than the noon comedy show: Fun, Franz Ferdinand, Regina Spektor, Jack White, Stevie Wonder. Might be one of my best music days ever. Keep having an incredible time out there, all.

Totally agree about Sigur Ros. They were incredible, as was Alabama Shakes (who drew a huge crowd). My other highlight was when Bob Weir came out to play The Dead's It Must Have Been the Roses with Nora Jones. Pretty mellow day overall.
I used to live a short walk from Golden Gate Park. I'd bundle up my daughters and put them in a double stroller and off we'd go. I absolutely love the place. And it's pretty funny seeing all the people dressed for weather in the 80s when the temps get down around 60 and the fog comes in with a vengeance.

Can anyone go over some of the differences between Roo and OSL (outside of the obvious like camping v non)? Talk up some of OSL's qualities?
I'm thinking of skipping Roo for OSL next year as I want to visit San Fran again and could include what seems to be an awesome fest with a great city and a visit to Pac Bell for a Giants game.

Any info would be great
I'll take a quick stab at this. I've been to 7 Roos and 4 OSLs and love them both.
The amount of music: You get more music at Roo. It's 4 days instead of 3 and the music lasts later. OSL ends no later than 10 p.m.
The climate: I don't know if OSL got above 70 and the nights were in the 50s. I've trained and equipped myself to deal with the heat at Roo. But, with the longer days, it takes a lot out of you. [For comparison purposes, I find Roo far more grueling despite the fact that I always go VIP at Roo and GA at OSL.]
The setting: Golden Gate Park is spectacular. You're surrounded by towering Monterey pines and cypress trees. The venues tend to be in meadows where the hills provide a good sound barrier (less bleed from other venues).
The crowd: I think it's younger at Roo, largely because of the camping. Lots of young people at OSL, too, but I think the OSL crowd skews older.
The food and beverages: Perhaps to cater to the older crowd, OSL has better food and drinks (including wine, which you can't buy at Roo) and a wider selection. They're pricey, though. $9 for a 16 oz. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
The fans' dedication: OSL is an urban festival that sells one-day tickets. So you get a larger number of casual music fans - people who may be there to see a particular band or who decided to check it out because they live in the area. In contrast, the vast majority of us need to go quite a bit out of our way to end up in a field in Manchester, TN.
No Shakedown Street at OSL.
I may add to this later. They're both wonderful experiences.

Thanks BillyPilgrim!
I've done 4 consecutive Roo's now and though I will find it hard to take a year off I am looking to get my festival fix inside another vacation. OSL seems to be a good fit. I don't necessarily need the hardcore 4 day experience, can get along without LN's, shakedown, and the escapism Roo offers from daily life, so long as I get a quality line-up and the festival feel.

Some propaganda from OSL's latest e-mail blast:
"More than a cookie-cutter American rock festival, Outside Lands takes advantage of its setting in Golden Gate Park by pointedly celebrating all that is the Bay Area. It's a strategy that really makes the event, now in its fifth year, stand apart from any other festival in its class...Outside Lands featured an expanded palette of food and beverage options that made eating and drinking at the festival just as much fun as listening and dancing."
-Rolling Stone
"The quality of music was at least equivalent to that at other regional festivals, though with its amenities Outside Lands may become an international destination like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival...Outside Lands' food fair offers a carnival of excess. Need chocolate-coated caramel corn? Visit Choco Lands. Craft beer? Beer Lands. Fire-roasted oysters, fried-chicken-and-waffles, shrimp ceviche? Yep. Chef and restaurateur Michael Mina, of this city's eponymous four-star establishment, served up a variety of lamb dishes. We're a long way from dirty-water hot dogs and warm beer."
-Wall Street Journal
"Deciding to escape Los Angeles for three days of Outside Lands in San Francisco was a no brainer; managing to escape Los Angeles during a crazy forecasted heat wave in exchange for three days of sweater weather, outstanding music, craft beer, red wine a-plenty and gourmet food in Golden Gate Park was nothing short of a blessing of earth's greatest delights."
After crunching the numbers to do Roo in a RV this year, I'm starting to think maybe it's time I move on from the farm and venture out to the west coast -- shockingly, it'd cost roughly the same. I was DYING to do OSL last year but by the time the lineup came out, it just wasn't enough time to save. So I figure this year I'm making my decision EARLY, and I've whittled it down to Roo RV or OSL.
I'm expecting Roo is the better musical experience, but factoring in the awesomeness of San Fran, I think OSL could be a better overall trip. However it really seems that OSL is stepping up their game.
Has anyone been disappointed with OSL after doing Roo?
If I skip Roo, will OSL give me my proper festival fix, or do you think I'll be left wanting more musically?
