I was just thinking the other day about ending all of my posts with aw**** Some people would probably think I meant aw shiz or something and I could be like "Naw that's my signature, maaaaan. I'm Alabama Wes."
It never ceases to amaze me how much the cr**** effects people.
I asked what it meant once. I didn't get an answer, besides it was canexplain 's sig. i just try not to think about it.
No they were amazing. It's nice to hear how well their voices hold up live unlike Passion Pit. Really hoping to avoid a Kendrick Lamar/Local natives conflict.
I though PP dude's voice was really good last night and that their show was kicking ass. They definitely have off nights but I'm pretty sure yesterday wasn't one of them. Plus I could go on and on about his tongue. More tongue shots and less screen savers please! cr*****
I only caught a song or two of HTDA last night, and can't say I was that impressed. Going to rewatch it today when I can put the volume up, but last night all I could feel was it was just...there. Her whispery vocals just weren't doing it for me. It could be that I just want NIN back, so take this opinion with a grain of salt Their stage setup did look amazing though.
Earl Sweatshirt also failed to impress, I won't be at his show at 'roo this year. I know it's cliche, but he really does fall into the category of "live rap sucks" for me. You mainly here his backing vocal track, with him yelling out his lines barely able to keep up with the delivery. Very few rap acts that I've seen have impressed me, even if I like their recorded material. Commence the hate.
On that note though, J5 was awesome last night, they still know how to bring it
His production staff def. demanded he use the backtrack; which actually was the whole track. He's a kid, I think just 19 at this point -- he hasn't done a lot of major venues and they are worried. Which is stupid because it ruined the set for me. On that note, he had no reason to be on a stage that big -- Odd Future shows seem to make more sense in tight space (or tent as will happen at Roo). J5 was fine, but mostly because I like Chali2na and Cut Chemist.
So blame the production staff, not all rappers use the backing track like that.
Agreed, not all rappers use the backing track like that, and those are typically the ones that I enjoy their live set. Earl might be young, but he should fight to perform without it. Let him sink or swim, I'll bet he'll make it work.
Modest Mouse could have easily made it through their set if it weren't for Isaac's requested "mmmmmmmm" and the 10 minutes he took to take 2 sips of beer.

I thought watching the sets were going to help me sort out conflicts for next weekend, I was wrong: it only made it worse! Now I want to see everything.

It goes back to what Deto said about him being young. I think a lot of younger acts don't have the confidence in themselves or the security in their careers to fight against management like that. As was said, this is a huge jump in prestige level in where he is playing especially with it being his show rather than as a part of odd future. He is performing at a pretty prime spot at one of the most important festivals in the country, and his show is going to be broadcast over the internet to everyone with access to youtube. You can't blame him for having some doubts creeping in about his ability. On the other side, his management is going to want to take as few risks as possible when it comes to their emerging talent making this big jump. Earl is getting more popular, but he doesn't have the kind of longevity or respect that is going to allow him to fight that much against their recommendations.
This is the craziest stage setup I've seen since Ghostland Observatory
I don't know if it's that crazy or elaborate as much as it fits the music and performance so well. Trent Reznor has been doing great things with his stage shows over his last few tours.
Purity Ring was awesome too. Improved my interest in seeing them at roo by 1000 percent. Purity Ring vs. FJM is a conflict I'd rather avoid having but it's potential is very real. Decisions.

It certainly does fit the music well, maybe thats what it is.

HOT DAMN!!! How To Destroy Angels is fucking insane, instant fan.
Purity Ring was so tight, they jumped up a couple spots on my priority list for Bonnaroo. Infected Mushroom's new stuff really kinda disappointed me =/ maybe you had to be there, but I liked them much more when they played their weird goa shit because it was so different and you never heard music like that at big shows. Their light set up was rad as hell though. Definitely loved Modest Mouse, Foals was awesome as always, and Jurassic 5 took me waaaay back. And damn the Sahara tent IS HUUUUUGE this year!!! Man Coachella gets more and more awesome every year. Bonnaroo needs to step up it's stage production game.

If you hated Lee Scratch Perry, LD, you probably didn't get to the end of his show. and his goddang 77 cut the dude some slack; his voice got stronger throughout the set. And Sparks was hilarious -- don't take music so damn serious.
Thoroughly enjoyed: Japandroids, Local Natives, Modest Mouse, and Blur. HTDA's display/graphics were off the charts amazing
Do you have a link or source on Earl's production staff demanding he use the backing track?
Because he used it for less than half the songs. All of the new material was just him rapping over an instrumental which I thought sounded GREAT. Even Tyler rapped over just instrumentals on the new song which I've never heard him do before and he is getting much better with his breath control.
The only songs where Earl rapped over his own vocals were the old songs: Orange Juice, Drop, Blade and the songs off the EARL album. Could be an issue with them not having the instrumentals anymore?

Christ, it's a normal production thing. If you watch SNL almost every act is an overdub. It's an assumption, there you go.
And that is a considerable amount of songs since his set was only 45mins. If they lost their instrumentals on popular tracks then they are failing already. And yes I did enjoy when he didn't rap over said vocals -- but it's clear he started screaming his lines so that you could tell he knows his verses. And that's where my assumption comes from, if you already have a plan set -- it's incredibly difficult to switch it around mid-show. It was a plan to use the backtracks heavily (they were up really loud honestly); even if things are going well they can't just switch that around.

Just read the CoS Day 1 review and it's not too terrible, though it is so typical that they make fun of a "bro" for calling out a Modest Mouse song by the wrong name and correct the "bro" with an also incorrect name of the same song (twice). It's not Miss the Boat, CosBro, it's Missed the Boat.

Understood and very well put. It still kills the live show for me personally though. Some of the songs the backing track wasn't just there in the background, it was the most prominent thing in the mix.
On a different note, I'm really hoping they decide at the last minute to stream Sigur Ros. Drop Knife Party or New Order (or air it afterwards), I need more Sigur Ros in my life! I'm still in awe of their Austin show I saw last week, would love to relive it a bit.

A Sigur Ros stream would be an instant #1 for the weekend for me, but I am not allowing myself to think it will happen at all.

Me too. I had never seen them live before and didn't know how they'd translate live. They absolutely slayed their set. Jonsi's vocals were spot on and the band was sooooo tight. Didn't think they could recreate their music live so well. And their stage set up was great too. For the first 2 or 3 songs, they played behind a massive sheer/curtain thing with videos projected against it. They also had well placed lights to put their silhouettes on sheer. After it dropped, their set up was just as great. Definitely a must see for me anytime they're in my area from now on. Convinced my friends going to Sasquatch to check them out. Seeing Sigur Ros at The Gorge must be magical.
Webcastchella day2!!! DKM! The boys are back in town. So excited, I love these guys.
Watching the Bauuer sh*tshow going on right now. Im so jealous...would I be there at bauuer raving, or Dropkick Murphys running in circles? Thanks to the webcast, I can do both in the comfort of my own home with a click of the mouse
