They've said they want to get rid of noise curfews for a while now, but since the deal to buy the land apparently fell through, they're looking to move elsewhere. Probably somewhere near the venues they promote (within a few hours of L.A.). I really like the festival's current location, but I like later noise curfews more, so I'm down with taking a year off if that's the end result.

They are looking into a land purchase still in the Coachella valley, but outside of indio.
Lots of things can change in the future, but at this point I can't imagine they would leave the valley. The name, the imagery, the art, it's all based off of that valley.
typical ridiculous behavior by ridiculous people (or mostly, just one) on the indio city council - really, second-graders could do a better job. quack indio, but happy to see it was resolved for now.
So I'm sure I can get this kind of info over on the Coachella boards (since it seems a lot of people over there are from the SoCal area), but it looks like I'm going to spend a couple weeks (or at least 10 days) there around Coachella weekend 1. Not sure if I'm going to end my trip with Coachella or start it there, but that can be figured out later. What's some other cool stuff to see/do/experience there? I've never been to that part of the U.S. (spent loads of time in Northern Cali/ the City/ etc.), so I'm up for anything.
Off the top of my head, I would look at Joshua Tree national park. With the time you have, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon would be do able.

Venice Beach
I live in LA and I've still never been to venice, crazy I know. Other ideas:
Joshua Tree National Park is close to Coachella area and is awesome, easy camping and cool desert plants and geology around.
Check to see if any bands you like are playing in LA, that would be a good reason to go into LA if you were so inclined (2 hour drive). There is alot going in LA the time around Coachella because the bands come into the city and play during the week in town. People call it Local-chella.
Disneyland, if that's your thing. Again not too far from Indio.
Universal Studios, Legoland, Knotts Berry Farm, and other amusement parks pretty much suck and are bunk.
We have mountains that are cool. If you dont mind driving a couple hours, the mountain views and foresty type settings are cool for camping and hikes.
Find some of our corn, you'll love it I promise
That's all I can think of right now. Lot's to do, and you seem reasonably intelligent I'm sure you'll figure it out.
They're totally moving. I think the question that remains to be answered is whether or not 2014 is cancelled.
Really? I thought the people of indio backed down from the tax thing.
While that one councilman did end up backing off, GV has been looking to move for some time now. This announcement can't be about this year - the 2013 presale already happened, and they won't release any more tickets until the lineup drops, and that's still a ways off - so I would guess that they've found someplace to move and that's what the announcement is about.

That or Daft Punk.
Goldenvoice just purchased part of the land the festival occurs on. I really doubt they are moving. Especially if the tax issue has been resolved.

I haven't double checked this, but I don't believe that deal ever went all the way through. It was very close to happening, but they (goldenvoice) backed off at the last minute... I believe? Or perhaps I'm thinking of a different portion of the Polo fields.

It's well documented that they looked into buying land in Indio, and while the owner of the polo fields (and GV's business partner) has bought nearby land, GV hasn't pulled the trigger on anything. That's why the threat against Sam Torres was a big deal - aside from their land contract that expires next year, they don't have any legal obligations or property-related responsibilities to keep them there.
