It depends. A lot of people dont know about how the pit works. My first year I actually thought it was VIP haha. It shouldnt be too tough. Arcade Fire didnt even fill up last year.
Last year I was turned away from the Which stage pit for The Strokes and Mumford and Sons. Other than that I think I was in the pit 12 different times. Never saw it get filled. I would even leave, go get beer, use the ports and come back. Never waited in line for them either. I would show up 10-15 minutes before a set usually right when they start filling it and be golden. CPK it is very true that no one knows how it works. It is in the book you get though. Guess no one reads that. There lose I guess. There were two girls in guest camping last year that asked me if my band from Hangout was my pit pass. I responded that they don't have pit passes and then she asked me how I got in there. My response, I walked in.
This my my first year, and I was just wondering about how fast the pit on the What Stage fill up before a headlining show?
For a headliner, generally you'll need to be in line at minimum by the time the pre-headliner leaves the stage. Or at least rush over to the pit line right after. Based on my experience, this is the time frame for getting in.

Depends on the show. Last year we spent 2 hours in line for MMJ and it worked out perfect. We tried getting to Mumford 2 hours early and the line was already ridiculously long with some people that had been there since 9am.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I left my whole group to go wait in the Mumford pit line alone... and failed. Ended up watching them alone in a bad spot
That doesn't make me feel good...
RHCP is one of those bands I think you need to be in line early for. Arcade Fire, I had very little desire to go to the pit, but certain bands fill it up quick.
I remember that the line for the Metallica pit in 08 was ridiculously long 4 hours before the show.

This is going to be my third roo, and sadly I never even knew about the pit... From the pictures, it looks like you go to the white structures (tents?) in front of the stages to get in? Can someone go over exactly what the process is like?
Go to the left by the VIP hill. From there, follow the fence line down to the front. You will either see a line or be able to get up to a metal barrier right next to the fence in front of VIP. That is the pit line.

How about the What Stage?
Last year was our first Roo and we didn't try but I'd like to for the Avetts this year.

And if you go to the pit line and see it's really long, go back to the right side of the What stage to watch the show so I have more room on the left side. Thanks.

So just to be clear, it is not the white tents that look like they have a walkway to the pit in the picture above? I feel like I'll never find this line!

Last year was my first Roo, and fortunately my girlfriend and I were both observant enough to catch onto how the pit works.
At Grace Potter we were up against the rail, and we just assumed the pit was a VIP section like CPK did. But then we noticed a small line and hopped in. We got in the pit a total of five or six times I think? The difficult part isn't finding the line, BonnaBrew, it's figuring out which line is for the show you want to see! My girlfriend is a huge Iron and Wine fan, but we were standing in the Strokes line for 30 minutes before we realized there were two going on. People line up early, it just depends on the show. For the Black Keys last year I tried to get in after Wiz Khalifa, but it was already too long. But if you want to see several shows in a row at the same stage, just get on the rail. It's usually pretty easy, and it's a great spot you'll have for multiple shows.

There's a pit at Which? Was that new in '11? I don't remember there being one in '10, and I hardly saw anything on Which last year and was never close enough to notice.
The pit is a mysterious fig. Last year we got in line for Grace Potter, and there was a girl sitting next to us in line for Arcade Fire. I said "You realize that show doesn't start for another 9 hours, right?" She goes "Absolutely."
But apparently, just above, the dude said it didnt even fill up for AF. What a waste of a day for that girl... Haha. Sucks for her.
I guess it just depends. I would at least get there for the band prior to the band you wanna see. But here is your forewarning. People WILL start lining up for headliners at noon. I don't know if it will fill up or not, but people will be there immediately when the gates open. Your choice on how soon you wanna get there.

So unpredictable. I walked right into the Metallica pit about two songs in. My friend was about 2 minutes behind me and didn't get in and the guy doing security tried to shake him down for $20 to get in.
Last year we tried to get in line super early, one of the security guards told us not to worry he'd remember our faces and help us out later if it became a problem. Obviously we didn't believe him, but we ran into numerous people who got the same story from the same guy. Needless to say, don't trust security.

Last year I was only in the pit for String Cheese Incident and walked right in and was quite surprised! I was in the back of the pit leaning on the back rail but it was so worth it!!
In 2010, I waited literally ALLLL day to be in the pit for Dave Matthews Band, that was not worth it. I was like 15th in line and still ended up 5th row somehow... People were saving peoples spots like crazy... I would've rather enjoyed the festival walking around than doing that crap again. I did enjoy the show besides being crammed packed into the pit without any space to move very well... that was the only thing I didn't enjoy. I think being in the back chilling on a blanket would've been more fun and relaxing. I won't do pit again for headliners unless I can just walk right in and be in the back.. or actually on the front rail so I have something to lean on.
So just to be clear, it is not the white tents that look like they have a walkway to the pit in the picture above? I feel like I'll never find this line!
No, those are the soundboards, and for people with backstage passes/workers

He told you that because he knew his shift would be up soon and he wouldn't be on duty "later" lol.
