It'll be my first time as well. So just to clarify: As I understand it, there will be multiple lines by the pit for different shows. For example, if I wanted to line up for Radiohead early, their line would be separate from, say, the line for Sharon Jones?
And if that's the case, how can you be sure which line is which (besides asking other people in line)?
And if that's the case, how can you be sure which line is which (besides asking other people in line)?
That's pretty much the only way. Either ask the people in line or the workers near the front of the line. Either way, you're going to have to interact with people. There aren't any signs or designated areas for it.
Wait, the main stages have a pit on each side- separated by a fence. You can't cross sides. It's not enter on the left/exit on the right. Unless I seriously missed something last year?
The Which pit was set up the same.
For what it's worth, I waited on the left side of the Which for Ray LaMontage and got into the pit. I waited on the right side for Mumford and there was no chance in hell I was getting in. Security was STRICT about this crowd. He had the original line all link up and refuse to let anyone sneak in, then he let them in one at a time.
I think traffic decides which side of the pit will fill up faster. If a big show at What just got out, and a lot of people are headed to the next show at Which, chances are they'll go to the left side of the Which stage since that's the way they'll approach it. KWIM?
I'm a tad disappointed just because it seems like all the other great bands that I love are playing at the same times and it's hard to choose, but then there's Foster The People. I'm a die hard Foster The People and would choose them over anyone. The only problem with that is the fact that they basically play by themselves. Nobody really has the exact same time frame as them which means there's going to be a huge crowd I'm guessing which is going to make it harder to get into the pit if I can even find it. I've been to multiple FTP concerts and have been front row pit every time. I don't want to end that streak just yet.

This picture says a lot. Multiply the amount of people in that pit by lets say 8. That is the amount of people that know how the pit system works. You aren't fighting 80,000 people. More like 2,000 that know what's up. Of course, this system is relatively new so it will get harder and harder as the years go by. Solely based on this thread I think my 11 appearances on the rail last year may never be topped.

My memory leaving MMJ is a tad hazy but I don't think that center divider/walkway was there. I think it was all open.

No, it was there.
Good point, Mikey. I'm glad that most people don't know about the pit and think it's for VIP. If it was common knowledge it'd be near impossible to ever get in. Last year I was in the pit for AF with a friend. After the show we met up with my sister and she was talking about how she was near the rail and it sounded like she'd somehow gotten better position than us. Turns out she just meant back behind the pit. We described where we were and she thought we'd snuck into VIP, as her and everyone around her thought it was all VIP ahead of them. AF is the only time I've been in the pit, but I'm going to try get in for Santigold this year. It's pretty awesome up there.
I know the pic is old. I just couldn't find one from last year. I didn't get in the pit at the What Stage, so I'm not sure about that, but I know for sure the Which Stage pit was separated.

Nope, they clear out the pit after every show. you would have to get back in line for RHCP
Correct. Nobody is allowed to stay, gotta pick one show or the other.
It's possible to get into the pit for back to back shows, I was able to do it for The Black Keys and Eminem last year. Like others have said most people don't understand how the pit works. I was able to line up maybe 10 minutes before MMJ and was able to squeeze into the pit. I was on the rail for the show, far stage right, but still the rail.
When I was in the pit for Eminem, I got in on the right side and then exited on the right side. It didn't seem like there was that center divider, but behind the pit, there was an area barricaded off that had jibs for cameras. I think this video was filmed from there.

From the picture, it looks like the pit lines go straight out to the sides of the stage. If this is the case, then I'm guessing seeing a show from the line is nowhere near as enjoyable as being in the crowd. Am I right?
I'm also wondering: How does being in the pit compare to being in the crowd, in your personal experience? I'd like to do it, but I'd rather not spend my day waiting in line if I'm not going to enjoy a substantial benefit.
Thank you so much for your help, everyone! As a first-timer, I really appreciate it a bunch.

For me it made the show...when your in the field, you just listen to the music (which is nice if you just wanna relax and chill), but when your in the pit you feel the music...you can see the artists faces, you can see what they do between songs...it's definitely worth doing at least once...preferably to a band that has a high energy show.

Seriously considering doing the pit for Phish. I don't want to mess with the insanity of getting in for radiohead, and I was already pretty close to them at the Houston show anyway.
I'm doing roo solo so I won't have to corral any friends. Could be a great opportunity to see my favorite band up close.

Any bets on how fast the pit for The Roots will fill up? I'm trying to gauge how early I'll need to leave Childish Gambino to get at least to the back of the pit.

The less crowded area behind the main pit at the two main stages are not vip, but total access. Total access also has reserved space in front of the soundboards and at the stage front left in the three pavillions as well as back stage entrance into the comedy tent. If you have more money than sense join this 52 year old.

I actually really like that. I hate waiting in line for over an hour and then seeing people just run to the front and get in.
Is there generally that much room towards the back of the pit? I imagined it would be less cramped with everyone crowding the rail/center, but that's a lot of empty space -- which is good I suppose.

I was considering trying to get up to the pit for Phish but Sunday is just so damn good it will be tough to pull away from a great band to go wait in line. It will have to be a game time decision for me Sunday afternoon.
There is usually space due to people cramming the rail, but I think that pic was taken before the artist was on stage, so it may not have been full yet.

Glad to hear you don't have to wait all day for most if not all shows. I'm hoping to get into the pit for the Avett Brothers who play at 5. Is 4:30 a safe time to get in line?
