For the bigger shows you can expect it to fill up immediately.
Here is my one pit experience...it was last year for Eminem.
The Black Keys were playing and the security people had all the people who wanted in the pit for Eminem wait on the right side of the crowd. When the BK's finished, I'm guessing that pit left out of the left side, then there was a stampede as we moved into the pit area from where we were waiting.
I got there about 1.5 hours before Eminem started, so you don't have to get there super early. I was about 10 feet from the stage, ~3 people back.
If it makes you feel better, the crowd for Mumford and Sons last year was ridiculous. Way, way over the average crowd size for Which.
Edit: Visual aids! Hooray!
It took me 15 minutes just to navigate through this crowd from Wiz Khalifa making my way to !!!... RIDICULOUS!!! Wiz should've been on Which and Mumford & Sons should've been on the What... Would've made my walk so much easier!!! When I got to !!! I could dance and run around in circles and not run into anyone! It was GREEEAAAATTT!!!

This is the correct answer. For the inexperienced, this guy is telling the truth.
The left side fills up quickly, so head to the right side and you'll be ok.
Wait, I thought it was the other way around? By left side, do you mean the side by the VIP hill? Or do you mean the side by the exit to the Which Stage?

what I've always wondered is how you can tell if the pit will be full by the length of the line. Anyone have an estimate of a location where the end of the line stopping there would mean the pit is full?
I was surprised to see Arcade Fire didnt fill the pit. Also, I'm watching the MMJ set from last year on youtube and they didnt fill it either.
That might just have been an issue of security not letting any more people in. Because I know that I was the last person that made it into the pit for My Morning Jacket before security cut people off behind me. At least at the pit on the side where you exit to go to Which.

At the pit on the side where you enter/exit to and from the Which, I've found that as long as you aren't past the bleachers (in terms of being directly in front of them, not beside them), you'll probably get in. Basically, as long as you are facing the bleachers from the front and not from the side, you'll probably get in.

It looked like the left side filled up, but the right side did not. I think someone posted before that this might be do to the moving camera on the right side. Maybe that is why it didnt look full.
They use a clicker to count the amount of people going into the pit. The human thumb will move faster than people going into the pit. They can never keep an accurate count because, it is shear madness when they open it up. The pit is never "full" because their clicker will say it is and after that they go to a 1 out 1 in policy. Like I said earlier I got into the pit for every what stage show I went to last year. Security guys knew me by the end of it. I wouldn't get there until 15 minutes before the show and always went for the rail. This always put me way to the side though. I think this year I'm done with the rail. I'd rather be fifteen heads deep and center than on the rail and off the stage.
Last year was my first roo... We headed over to the pit line for mmj about 2 songs prior to the decemberists finishing. We were in line for about an hour (I think they let us in 15 minutes before the show started). There weren't really any metal rails to the sides so a lot of people were trying to move up and squeeze in which was making me nervous. When they opened the gate my friends and I basically got squished through to the opening. I felt like a baby being born. It was intense but worth it.
Would love to try to make it in there for RADIOHEAD but I doubt it will be that easy. I'm pretty positive mmj filled it up
By the way that was te right side of the what stage... Right behind that there were already a lot of people in line for arcade fire.... Wrong show suckers

This is correct, I think the cut off for us was at the bleachers. You'll get a 'feel' for it once your standing there and talking to everyone.

I waited on the line for MMJ last year, we were about 30 people back, waited about an hour and got right in. Theres now bad spot in the pit, so as long as your not behind 100 people, you should be fine. Also, be aggresive, because everyone else is once they open the pit. If you the love the band, as I love mmj, its worth the wait. Its a totally different show in the pit.

Being in the pit is what made that show awesome
that show was pretty fuckin awesome regardless of where you were

the left side has much more GA room, because on the right side behind the pit area for GA that we all lineup for is the Total Access (Roll Like a Rockstar) pit, that's why the pit on the right side did not look full.. because the total access pit was totally empty.

So on Friday, would I be able to catch Sharon Jones until four and immediately line up for the Avett Brothers at 5, or should I skip Sharon and get in line for the Avett brothers at 2:45?
It depends. A lot of people dont know about how the pit works. My first year I actually thought it was VIP haha. It shouldnt be too tough. Arcade Fire didnt even fill up last year.
I was in the pit for arcade fire last year and can assure you that it filled up. My girlfriend and I got in line (in front of the bleachers on the right side of the stage) shortly after the line for MMJ was allowed in. About 45 minutes into MMJs set they fenced off the pit line so that no one else could enter. We waited in line for approximately 3.5 hours (2.5 of which we were packed in like sardines once the line had been fenced off). The open area that you saw during Arcade fire was due to people pushing up to the front. Based on this experience I would say that for a headliner you need to be getting in line BEFORE the opening band takes the stage. I plan on doing the same for Radiohead this year but most likely no one else (at least not other headliners). The process is pretty physically draining (emotionally draining too as you frantically search through the crowd to find where the end of the line is- the Roo workers weren't much help) but totally worth it for a band that you love.
From what I'm understanding, there is an additional line for the pit on the left side of the stage. Perhaps things are different on that side. I'll be checking it out early in the weekend!
Quick question, the Roots play on What until 9 and theN RHCP at 10. Is it possible to watch the Roots from the pit and stay for RHCP. I REALLY want to be in the pit for RHCP. Thanks guys

Nope, they clear out the pit after every show. you would have to get back in line for RHCP

Correct. Nobody is allowed to stay, gotta pick one show or the other.
