Bon Iver had the #2 album on the Billboard 200 at one point, won two Grammy's and is still not a headliner. People who think Beach House would headline a festival are either kidding themselves or had a recent serious head injury that knocked a screw loose.
When Beach House, Grizzley Bear, etc. get a #1 album, we can talk about them headlining Bonnaroo.

I understand that. I'm saying I think those bands are just as capable of that success as I thought Bon Iver was before that last album. Don't get me wrong I love Bon Iver, and I knew the amount of talent there, but tell me you honestly thought in 2009 that Bon Iver would be this big now. I think the aforementioned artists have similar talent and could make that jump, and they're no more niche-y than Bon Iver.
I just highly doubt those bands are headlining. That 5th spot is as high as most of these bands can go in the next 5 years, I would think, but even that is hoping for a lot. They basically need an album to go big with mass appeal, and I don't think those bands will pull it off. For the record, I like almost all of the acts mentioned in this thread, so it's not a hate thing, I just don't see how most, or any, headline a major festival. That 10-15 range seems like the likely peak for most of them, with a few exceptions getting into the top 10. But headliners? IIIIII dunno.

Yeah, most of these selections are not headlining material. They are niche indie bands and they may become popular indie bands but they just arent headliner material. You have to be a band that is going to get a majority of a 100k people excited and very rarely does an indie band do that. It also needs to be someone that is peak worthy. Meaning something that is going to top off a day that is build up from noon on. Someone that will just blow people's minds (Radiohead) or someone that has been around for a long time and most people know the music (RHCP). The bands listed here just arent at that level and most likely, never will be. Not because they arent talented enough but because they just dont play the kind of music that is capable of it.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

I'm gonna side with the schedule makers and say Unchained the Ultimate Van Halen Tribute Band will headline Bonnaroo by the end of the century. There I said it.

I feel pretty strongly that if Deerhunter put out another album on par with Halcyon Digest, it would get some pretty serious recognition. I could see them headlining a Friday night in a couple years.
It would be really awesome if Friday night in a few years was Fleet Foxes and Deerhunter, kinda like MMJ and Arcade Fire last year.
It's a longshot but I was really impressed with how big Deerhunter's live sound is. I think it's possible. I'm hopeful! And if you haven't listened through Halcyon Digest, do yourself a favor.

Hahaha it's a pretty safe bet, but I think they have as good a chance as the other bands that fall into that category and current standing. I'm gonna hold you to that vital organs comment!

Just looking at Deerhunter's 2011 tour dates, it looks like their last solo date was at Cosmic Charlies which apparently has a capacity of 200-250.

Bon Iver has two well-received albums and a fairly transcendent live show, and as a Deerhunter fan I consider it possible that someday Halcyon Digest will get the credit it deserves and they could be billed 5th on the Roo lineup.
Yes this is an outrageous statement but just let me have this one
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

Haha, yeah I mean, I know there's a slim chance of Deerhunter ever headlining a major festival. I just figured if there was ever an opportunity to make ridiculous statements about a band I support, this thread would be that opportunity.

I think that Florence + The Machine, The Weeknd, Vampire Weekend, Bon Iver, and the Avetts could all make that last leap.
As for those who still aren't quite that big, Cut Copy is growing by leaps and bounds with every album too, so I could see their festival billing going higher in the near future. Plus, their live show is incredible.
Deerhunter is one great album short of becoming a big name
Were you at their Bonnaroo show last year? If so, did you see the amount of people that walked out of that show? I'd never seen that many people walk out of a show before, early, too. They're not close to being headlining material. Granted, I'm a fan myself so I'm not attacking the band. I just know that they're not close to being able to draw the amount of people required to be a big name.
