Saw this on the Coachella board, and thought it was interesting. Who does everyone think are bands that could explode over the next couple of years and headline in 4-5 years from now?
I'm talking about the next Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, the Killers...
Some predictions of bands that I think have the potential:
Passion Pit Phoenix Yeah Yeah Yeahs Bon Iver Mumford & Sons Avett Brothers Zac Brown Band (hoping they take a DMB/ABB approach to their music, rather than a country route)
I think some of the acts that have been around awhile (Wilco, Beck, Flaming Lips, Roots) have hit a plateau in terms of popularity.
Some people might be annoyed at this thread, but I think it is kind of interesting to see what bands we think will explode and get popular down the road. Obviously, none are big enough now and will require 2-3 more major albums over 4-5 years of gaining fans and you have to factor in what you think their future albums will be like (Black Keys took a more radio friendly approach after starting off as a garage blues band, which many probably didn't see coming).

I could see Mumford and the Avett Brothers. Don't see Passion Pit or Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
My Morning Jacket will be headlining some of the major fests soon, probably Bonnaroo first with ACL and Lolla later. Could see Phoenix headlining festivals depending on the singles from their upcoming album. Acts like Wilco and Bon Iver that are headlining some of the mid-level fests will probably start headlining the big ones with one more strong album release.
Also it would obviously be a long ways away but with how fast they're blowing up and how acts like Jack White and The Black Keys are taking over rock, I could see Alabama Shakes headlining festivals in 5-7 years after a few more strong albums

And is it too obvious to claim Foster the People? Regardless of your thoughts on their music, another hugely popular album and I figure they'll be headlining festivals.

MMJ and Wilco always jump out at me. I could see Jack White doing it at some point as well.
I also liked the suggestions of Bon Iver and Zac Brown Band. Not particularly because I'd like them to headline but because if they continue rising in fame and popularity I could see it happen. I'd love to see a band like Deer Tick or Portugal. The Man rise up in the next 5 years and reach that level but it's so hard to tell if that will happen.
He's already going to be headlining Lollapalooza this year.
I don't think Jack White really counts either because he's already headlining a handful of other festivals this year.
As far as young and up and coming-ish bands I could definitely see Vampire Weekend headlining after another critically/commercially successful album or two.

I like Wilco, maybe not as much as a lot of people on this board, but I do like them. I think that if at this point they havent broken into the main stream they wont. I can see them preheadlining, but I dont know if they will headline. Then again Bonnaroo seems to have headliners that are fan favorites, rather then hit machines
MMJ and Jack White are probably currently headliner level, as well as Adele, so I'm leaving them out.
Florence, Mumford, Avett Brothers, Bon Iver, Wilco, FtP, Phoenix, and ZBB are probably one more big release away from headliner status. All the big current "hip" electronic artists (Skrillex, Avicii, Bassnectar, Deadmau5) have probably reached the peak of their popularity but I don't see them headlining 'roo, but definitely other fests.
My list of bands that need a few releases to reach that level, in order of likelihood in my opinion: Drake Death Cab fun. The Civil Wars Fleet Foxes Alabama Shakes M83 Miike Snow Deerhunter Mastodon Edward Sharpe War on NO NO WORD!!!
Long Shots: Decemberists (depending on length of hiatus), Gary Clark Jr., and Reptar Long Long Shots: Art vs. Science and Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds (both cafe acts this year, have ingredients for success)
My longshot is Gary Clark Jr. Saw him on a magazine cover the other day, and he just had that born to be a star look. He has still yet to produce a great album, so there's alot of work to be done. But as far as talent goes, along with a marketable sound and look, he could rise pretty high. Maybe along the lines of Ben Harper's career, who always seemed as if he was on the cusp of headlining but never got there.
Animal Collective looks like they're going more fragmented and arty on their next album, doubt they make the next step.
AnCo are ready to start headlining festivals. Now weather they want to or not is still yet to be seen. They have way more drawing power then Foster the whoever. They have 10 or so songs that if they would have seen air play would have be mega hits.
