It's actually not free, it's like $20. I thought it was supposed to be free too, I seem to remember it initially being announced as such.
I would be going to that, but I am going to Phish Oak>ATL instead.
Gotdamn! I didn't know it wasn't free... The Hangout is so random. All they've announced on their site was that it was some silly SEC weekend thing, and they expect to charge $20 @ the door? Oh well... I'll be there either way. You don't really wanna go to Phish do you? ;D
"they have a LOT to learn about music lovers. We don't just NOT GO to a festival. We camp out in the rain, we get filthy, we play in the mud, we survive Nor-Easters from the quite-flimsy safety of a QUITE flimsy tent, we turn over ankles, we sweat, we dress like we were at Carnivale' in Brazil, and we pay WAY too much for Maui Wowies. But we GO. Because the rain, the crowds, the heat---THEY DON'T MATTER. We only came for the music. It is our release, and it is our way."
Why the fuckk would they book the Foo Fighters again when they just headlined last year? highly unlikely me thinks...
I forgot about that. Minor oversight. IDK who to replace them with then. I would say Rolling Stones, but I think they would be too expensive. Metallica maybe?
Good list. Replace foo fighters with another rock band, and I think Jack Johnson would be a headliner. Also muse would be a headliner.
I could see Buffett headlining as well.
I could totally see Buffett headlining, and he would fit well in place of the Foo Fighters.
As far as Jack Johnson and Muse go, and maybe I am out of touch, but I personally don't think either would headline. Jack has lost some steam and popularity and Muse - when I bring them up to friends they are like "who?". Like I said, maybe Im out of touch. I would think that Muse would headline before Jack.
My attempt at a schedule with these bands would be:
Friday: 5-615 Young the Giant (chevy stage) 6-730 Keoki (XBox tent) 630-8 Snoop (Main Stage) 730-9 Muse (Chevy Stage) (or replace Muse with the FLips - theyve been there every year and Wayne wants to come back every year) 9-11 Will.i.am (XBox) 930-11 Mumford and Sons (Main)
Saturday: Headliner (Beck, Metallica, Buffett) 9-11 (Main) Jack Johnson 7-830 (Chevy) Unless Buffett is the headliner Deadmau5 730-10 (XBox) Ed Sheeran 530-7 (Main) Dropkick Murphys 430-6 (Chevy) LMFAO 4-530 (XBox)
Sunday: Phish 8-11 (Main) My Morning Jacket 630-8 (Chevy) Foster the People 5-630 (Main) Ben Folds 330-5 (Chevy)
I could see them getting Soundgarden as a headliner for next year for the saturday rock headliner. I think Phish would play friday and the lite/classic rock act would be sunday. And I really hope it's not f'n Jimmy Buffet. I want Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, or Prince. I could see them getting Gov't Mule or Primus again too and leave off The Flaming Lips.

If soundgarden is touring they are a definite possibility. I hope we don't get Buffett, i'm sure we all do.
I'll bet we start seeing Ellie Goulding out on the festival circuit next year, she is a possibility. Bassnectar or PL could be back as well. Avicii could show as well as an EDM tent headliner.
Beck - My Morning Jacket - Foster the People - Deadmau5
Primus - Snoop Lion - LMFAO - Amon Tobin - Will.i.am - Ed Sheeran Ben Folds Five - Matchbox 20 - D'Angelo - Dropkick Murphys - Alabama Shakes - Cypress Hill John Fogerty - Superstar DJ Keoki - Punch Brothers - Fitz and the Tantrums - Deer Tick - Dr Dog Zack Deputy - Lotus - Trampled by Turtles - SBTRKT - Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr - Frankenstein Brothers - Conspirator

Hangout booked some godawful bands last year, but I doubt they go for someone like Will.i.am or Matchbox 20. They want to be viewed as a peer of Roo/Coach/Lolla, and a few bookings like that would mess that up.

That is an interesting take. I am not saying I agree or disagree, but I am curious why you say that about Matchbox 20 or Will.i.am messing up their perception as a festival or alienating them from being a peer of the big boys. I don't see how they can ever get close to that kind of notoriety being less than 1/2 the size.
Matchbox 20 is coming out with a new album soon and Will.i.am is too (or they already are out), which is why they are both on the list.
FTR I am not a fan of R&B/rap but I do like Will.i.am because he is more funky and has better music backing - and his songs don't all sound the same to me. Id personally like to check it out if he is at a festival I go to (provided there isn't a conflict).
Will.i.am is weaksauce. They need to bring back The Roots.....they were probably the best set of the first Hangout, along with Mule & Trey.
Keoki def isn't dead, just looked it up lol. His wiki said he denies passing out at his turntables at the Limelight during the Club Kid days. NANS! A buddy of mine saw him nodding off at the State Palace in NOLA in the mid 90's.
Interviews like that one suggest that he's trying to cultivate a strong reputation. Bonnaroo and Coachella became destination festivals for people all across the country by putting together interesting lineups that mostly avoided the lowest common denominator pop stuff. Hangout wants to be considered one of the grown ups, so I expect that they'll follow the same model. They don't want to be one of those city fests that mix current pop artists and familiar has-beens with your more standard festival bands. That's what Beale Street does, it's what Music Midtown in Atlanta used to do, it's what River Stages did in Nashville when I was growing up. There's nothing wrong with festivals like that - they're usually affordably priced, and they cover so many bases that just about anyone can find something they like. But they aren't destination festivals, they pull big local/regional crowds and that's mostly all they pull.
Part of building that reputation means avoiding the critical punching bags. Will.i.am is the most prominent member of one of the most consistently ripped-on pop groups of the last decade. The only band that catches more shit than the Black Eyed Peas is probably Nickelback. Both of them could build Scrooge McDuck pools with the money they've made, but the major festivals aren't biting because cachet counts for something.
Basically, if I can't imagine someone getting booked at Coachella or Bonnaroo, I can't imagine them at Hangout, either.
I imagine Further, Phil & Friends, Dark Star Orchestra, or 7 Walkers will be there.
the big question is will Phil be touring next year? he had said a few months back that he was going to quit touring, though he wasn't specific on when.
I'd love to see Furthur at least once before they call it quits.
Makes total sense about Will.i.am. I guess replace him with something less polarizing like Lil Wayne, Big Boi, Ludacris, etc. FWIW I never in 1,000,000 years thought Mac Miller would be at Roo. And FTR I saw his whole show at Hangout this year and had fun. Would I ever see him again? no. Would I ever buy a CD of his? not a chance - but I did have fun at the show.
As far as Gilmour/Floyd at the fest - I have a question. When was the last time Waters or Gilmour did anything at a US festival? I think it will happen sometime soon (2013 hopefully) and if Hangout really wants to be considered as a peer of the big boys that would be a great way to do it. That would be an amazing get for them. Can you imagine the lasers and show at the beach? DSOTM went over pretty well...just sayin'

That's what I'm screamin'. It's been far too long and it would be perfect for Hangout.
