Totally leaving aside the "DURR THEY JUST PRESS PLAY" argument, there just simply isn't enough diversity in the EDM sphere to support these kinda payouts for very long. The top earners are way too interchangable.
I agree. The decline will start in a few years. But I think it will be interesting to see if the popularity decline of EDM will lead to a decline in popularity of music festivals as well. I think one reason that festivals have become so popular over the past few years is the resurgence of EDM music. The kids want to party and hear some womp womps. I think of them as the "independent voters" of music festival attendance. You can't count on them to go to festivals every year. If it stops being the cool thing to do, I wonder if they'll keep coming.
I think there will be a decline in the number of smaller festivals, but bigger festivals and ones held in major cities won't have a problem

Who cares how much he actually got what I'm talking about is how much the check that ACE wrote to have him play, AKA the amount of money not being used to book other bands. Like I said my educated guess would be around $800,000. Obviously not all of that goes to him. Other costs involved include transportation, crew, booking agency, stage setup, etc.
PS I think another part of the Skrillex contract limited the number of big names acts on at the same time as him to one which explains the other latenights.

I've been saying this since the schedule came out last year
So how much exactly do you think it costs to book Skrillex at a major US festival? and why do you think Roo booked Pedrito or Unchained?
Well, to quote the article that this thread is about...
The truth, according to an insider with knowledge of the deals, is that the top rate is $100,000 for 20 minutes—$300,000 an hour.
And Skrillex is NOT a top rate DJ, yet.
So lets give him his best benefit of the doubt. And say he's 200,000k an hour.
He played 1.5hrs at Bonnaroo.
Thats $300,000. Thats the MOST I see him making.
And if you look at other festivals he plays, he has had plenty of conflicts, so to say that he demanded "crappy bands" in the tents is absurd imo.
Petrido or whoever played because of AC. Unchained played because of an already built relationship with SuperFly. There obviously was a lack of artists that played on Saturday that could play the late night set.
First of all I know nothing about what makes a quality DJ (Yes I know, Skrillex, you are a producer not a DJ), but I do know that pay depends on popularity and not skill or quality. I do know that as far as ticket sales Skrillex is near the top.
I also know that price levels at major festivals are nothing like normal shows. It is all about who needs who more the musician or the festival. There are literally thousands of bands that can fill the lower half of the lineup, therefore festivals can pay them next to nothing in prospect of the exposure they receive. There are significantly less top 10 level bands and those are the ones that the average person (not inforoosters) buy festival tickets to see. As a result the festivals must pay them huge amounts, often more than they make for a normal show. This is the case with Skrillex.

I agree with Bacon on this one. There are prolly tons of dj's better than Skrillex but since he is a pretty big draw, I could see them not putting him up against a major act (per his request)

This is very true. I'm still not sure Skrilly is pulling down 800k, but it wouldn't surprise me. When you're booking a tour for someone like him, you start with the festivals. If Bonnaroo wants him, that means he's shaping a whole summer tour around having to be in EDM mecca of middle America in June, then route his tour from there. For someone of his name recognition it's really not a treat or a privilege to play Bonnaroo, especially considering how much more EDM focused most of the other major fests are now. All this comes at a premium.
I'm not sure about the "no competition" clause. I've never heard of something like that. I think it's more a factor of Bonnaroo being undersold (despite saying they were "sold out").
I agree with Phi here. There is no way skrillex got paid close to $800k for his roo set. Half that much would still be a stretch to me. Tiesto is the highest paid dj in the world and he makes about $250,000 a night.
Here's an interesting article on the money djs make. Vegas might be pushing the limits of what a dj can be paid, but the rest of the country isn't Vegas and festivals generally pay artists less to begin with.

I understand that but since most electronic big name acts were booked for Vegas that weekend, would it not make sense to pay Skrillex Vegas pay to ensure him for Bonnaroo?

Skrillex absolutely got paid more to play Bonnaroo than these articles indicate. There is a huge difference between shows where they just show up with thumb drives and headlining Bonnaroo.

I was with you until this. Maybe you meant lil wayne? SCI was an amazing time and huge spectacle. Biggest reason I went last year.
Skrillex was billed 9th, not a headliner . Even with edc going on he's not getting double vegas rates. At best he got around 400k, which I still think is high.
